Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

Gym vs. M&Ms

September 23rd, 2010 @ 5:53 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

Y’all, I’m freaking out a little here.

My wedding countdown on The Knot is telling me we are hovering dangerously close to the 100-day mark. We’re almost at 3 months to the wedding! There is so much left for me to do, and not NEARLY enough time to do it!

But, we’ll get to all the other stuff I have to get done later. That’s just a whole post to itself. Today, let’s talk about one thing that’s been weighing pretty heavily on my mind lately: fitness.

Now, before I get started, let me just give a little disclaimer. I know that I do not need to lose weight. I’m happy with the size I am (for the most part) and I’d like to maintain my size, and perhaps tone up a bit. But I realize that I don’t have a ton of weight to lose or anything like that.

I am naturally a very active person, so working out is something that I enjoy when I do manage to talk myself into actually doing it. I really love the feeling I get from working out, and I love being active and working out every day.

… But I also love to eat.

Especially things that aren’t particularly healthy for me. And student teaching hasn’t really been helping that. In our classroom, we have small cups of candy placed around the room for us to use as reinforcers for the kids. It a great system and it works for the kids. The only problem? I think I might reinforce myself a little more often than I reinforce them. When I’m sitting at a table waiting to work with a kid and there is a cup of Smarties and a cup of M&Ms sitting within reach of me…well, I just can’t resist grabbing a few. Multiply that by about 20 times every day and…let’s just say it adds up.

Plus, by the time I get home, I’m so exhausted that working out just seems like the worst idea ever. I really feel much happier and more relaxed on the days that I work out, but actually getting myself to do it is easier said than done.

Gym vs. M&Ms : wedding austin fitness Exercis

Yeah, that sounds familiar. (Source)

So take too many “reinforcers,” not enough exercise, and a whole bunch of stress and what do you have? A certain Miss Cardigan who is rapidly realizing that she had better do something to stop this before it gets out of control!

Honestly, I want to be able to sit here and tell you all that I’m just going to do it. I’m going to stop eating Smarties and M&Ms, I’m going to work out as soon as I get home every day, and I’m going to resist the urge to get a Coke from the vending machine every day at school. But in reality, it’s just not that easy. When I’ve spent the entire day away from Mr. Cardigan, the last thing I want to do is leave him to go work out—and forget about getting him to join me. Mr. Cardy is not a fan of exercising!

So, what’s a girl to do? I’ve been okay about working out these past few weeks—I’m doing it at least two or three times a week, but that’s not nearly as good as this summer when it was five or six times a week. I need to figure out a way to motivate myself to work out more (my goal is AT LEAST four times a week, preferably five), and I need to figure out a way to resist the junk food.

Do you have any advice for me? I need to come up with a solid plan so I can nip this problem in the bud. I refuse to start gaining weight this close to the wedding! Help!

Renovate your house! ;) Mr. SD and I inherited his grandma’s house, and the project included ripping up carpet, a whole lotta painting, and about a million other activities. I’d given up getting to my “goal weight” in March, and I lost 8 pounds this summer just working on the house. So I’d say, figure out a project you love that takes a lot of physical activity and enjoy it with your fella. You’ll be shocked at the change in health and endurance!

Are you allowed to chew gum during the day? Gum plus M&Ms = gross.

Have you thought about trying to get a workout in early in the morning? I’m with you… once I get home from a long day, the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. Maybe if you got up and did it early before you start your day it might help… That’s what I have to do, and I am NOT a morning person.

I’m not this motivated, but I have a friend who has an exercise bike in front of the TV, and has a rule that if she’s watching TV she also has to be using the bike.

I have a dog and feel guilty if I don’t take him for a walk each evening, so I at least get that much exercise (and it usually perks me up enough to at least do crunches or something). A dog probably isn’t the best ‘right before the wedding’ purchase, though!

I felt like I could have written this post! As a fellow special ed teacher, I find myself reinforcing my behavior WAAAAY more than my kids’ here lately (goldfish and M&Ms, what a combo!) Thankfully I am an assistant coach for Girls on the Run at my school, so at least I’m getting a little exercise here and there. I’m so not motivated to work out on my own, but running with 3rd-5th grade girls - I can totally do that! I’ve also enlisted my MOH to start walking with me once a week after school. We were walking buddies in college so we’re trying to resurrect the tradition to shape up for the wedding.

I feel your pain. What I did was purchase a two week bootcamp which I can use anytime in the next six months, I bought it on one of those group coupon sites so it was only $25! I suggest you look on those for a good deal, they always have exercise classes and similar things, try groupon, livingsocial and socialbuy
this way I don’t have the money excuse and I know a group environment will help motivate me

I am most dedicated to working out when I have a goal– and not a weight one, but a race or a competition.

If you’re not much of a runner, sign up for a 5K near your wedding. You have just about enough time to do the C2K program! I know once I spend my money on a race, I always train for it– I’m too stubborn (and cheap) not to!

I have a bit of the same problem with sweets and M&Ms are my favorite! I usually allow myself to have at least something chocolate everyday. The only time I resisted was for 2 months was when my fiance said I couldn’t. Of course I had to prove him wrong! Which wasn’t easy since I’m a medical student in doctors offices with tons of free goodies that drug reps bring in. But I found him thinking that I was that addicted to chocolate enough to try and prove him wrong. I started with telling myself that I wouldn’t have anything for one week. And surprisingly once you stop the urge really gets better. So I kept it going for two months. See if you can get Mr. Cardy on board to keep you motivated and challenge yourself to resist the temptation!

Cream soda is my vice. I let myself have 1 only once a week. Maybe you should try a new workout routine. I started doing kettlebell workouts and you see results sooooo freakin fast, it really keeps you motivated.

I’m right there with you hun! I have such a hard time motivating myself after a long work day… My solution has been to go at lunch! If you have the flexibility at your job to be able to do it, go for it. It’s wonderful. There is about 2 - 3 of us that head over like every day - I’m not kidding - and it’s the best accountability/motivation I’ve ever had.

I don’t know what to tell ya about the M&Ms, I’m still struggling with THAT part. When you find the secret, let me in!

Something about reinforcing behavior with food in schools is disturbing me… it’s bad enough we do it to ourselves, but to condition children to the type of reward system that we ourselves are trying to avoid seems backward, doesn’t it? Not to mention the sugar rush in these kids..

Don’t get me wrong, M&M’s are one of my weaknesses, and I’d never be the type of person to want to ban bake sales from schools, but this type of reward system just baffles me… What happened to pencils and stickers? And books? Or extra recess time?? Wouldn’t that be more beneficial to kids in terms of health??

Thanks for all of the great suggestions everyone! I’m starting to feel more motivated already!

@Wehaf: That is a brilliant idea! I need to find out if gum is okay - that would be a huge help!
@jessiebelle: I would totally do the exercise bike thing if I could afford one (or if we had room for one!) I would work out all. the. time. if we had an elliptical!
@MissMeg: Glad to know I’m not the only one who self-reinforces! :)
@MissDonnaAnne: Haha, yes I do work with children with autism!
@KC: Our kids rarely receive more than 8-10 smarties or M&Ms in a day, so we’re by no means overloading them with sweets! We focus much more on rewarding with free time activities that the kids like. But, especially when you’re working in a special education environment, you have to find the reinforcers that work with the kids and stick with them. I’d rather have my students get a few extra calories in them than spend their day hitting their peers or throwing things across the room.

I have no good advice, I’m pretty bad with working out regularly, and pretty much just tortured myself before our wedding by cutting out bread.

But good luck! :)

I say get someone to help you stay motivated. I can blow off working out when it’s just me, but if I promised someone else, then I feel like a jerk if I cancel on them.

What works best for me is to go straight to the gym after work. No going home first — otherwise, my couch looks too good!

Smarties and M&Ms placed strategically at the gym? Just sayin’, it’d work for me!

I have like the best news for you! Smarties are like the candides that have less sugar! I mean they have sugar, but they are not like the most fattening candy out there. Once I did a diet with the nutricionist and all and I was able to eat, smarties and fun dip, cuz they have like very low calorie count;)I understand you with the coke issue.
My suggestion is for you to find the no-so-bad junk food, I mean Zero Coke, less calorie candies and things like that, cuz beign realistic with the stress of the wedding and all a diet and a 7 day work out is not that easy.
Hope it works:)
