About Ms. Sloth

It Ain’t Easy Being Green

September 24th, 2010 @ 8:07 am by Ms. Sloth

Although I’ve been reading wedding blogs since before we even got engaged, I haven’t picked up a single wedding magazine. Part of it is because I figured I could get everything I needed online. And part of it is because I already get too many magazines and I just find them so wasteful. I’ve already let most of my subscriptions lapse, and after the rest of them do, I won’t be renewing.

But a while back, at the salon, while waiting for my stylist to finish up on someone else, I picked up an issue of Brides Philadelphia that was on the table in the waiting area. Brides Philadelphia is published by the publishers of Brides and Modern Bride magazines, and I assume that most of the content is the same as it is in other cities, with only the local content being swapped out.

It Ain't Easy Being Green : wedding philadelphia Brides

Anyway, I wasn’t too impressed with anything I read. It was mostly just advertisements. But then I came across this little blurb in an article about wedding trends that were “out.”

Eco-Everything

The marketing hype over green wedding products has left us rolling our eyes—and, more importantly, no closer to taking better care of the planet.

OK. Now. Admittedly, I don’t know any statistics to confirm or deny what they said, but in my opinion, even if one couple has one wedding where they try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, that’s something. If a couple plans their wedding with the environment in mind and uses recycled products, patronizes local vendors, and reduces waste, it’s better than throwing a big, wasteful wedding. Simple as that.

Look, I work in marketing. I know that the whole point of marketing is to sell products, or services, or a message, or an ideology. I know that sometimes it’s hard to believe that anyone who is marketing anything isn’t just in it for the money. But at least they’re marketing something important and positive. And maybe the eco “hype” isn’t making a giant impact on the environment, but it’s at least getting the message out that it’s important.

At any rate, “rolling your eyes” at green-wedding marketing is just making me roll my eyes right back atcha, Brides Philadelphia.

And while our wedding might not be the greenest on the planet, we’re taking strides to ensure that it’s not as wasteful as it could be:

  1. We’re going to include as few pieces of paper in our invitation suite as possible.
  2. We’re not going to have programs at all. We might list some information on a chalkboard instead.
  3. Our menus will be on a chalkboard also.
  4. We’re using all local vendors, and our vendors are using local products (food, flowers).

Are you taking any measures to ensure that your wedding is as eco-friendly as possible?

Very well said! That “roll our eyes” comment made me want to roll my eyes too! Bravo to you & your SO to make efforts to have a greener wedding!

I had a big wedding and did not focus on “green” and it was not wasteful - you should not judge others

I wish I had thought more about being green in my wedding planning. Instead, I freaked about not having a job and saving as much money as possible. So I applaud your desire to be as green as you can.

I’m doing a chalkboard menu too! And considering doing my seating arrangements on a vintage window if I can find it.

For our wedding another green thing we’re doing is trying to find as many thrift store or yard sale things as we can to repurpose, recycle, and reuse! Not only is it going to make everything look unique, but it’s environmentally friendly, and wallet friendly as well…lol

Now if they could only make an eco friendly spray paint for me to hose down all of my finds with…lol

@Lynn: I’m sorry if you’re offended, but I’m just saying that it’s better for the environment to not be wasteful. That’s not a judgment, it’s a fact.

You’ve said it Sister! I don’t consider myself eco-friendly…just frugal. The basic underlying principles for both schools of thought are about the same. While one is about me and saving money, and the other is a “supposed” saving the planet… but the end results are the same.

We’re going to do a chalkboard:
Program
Menu
Seating Chart!

But, mostly not becuase I want to be green, but because they are awesomely adorable!

@Lynn: Wow, I didn’t think she was judging… or judging you for that matter. Anyhow Ms. Sloth, I do applaud your dedication to all things green. I unfortunately have fallen in love with this invite suite that is gorgeous and oops, uses a lot of paper. The way I figure it though, I live in NYC, I don’t have a car, wonder if that’s green enough. I’m with you on the magazines, I didn’t buy any, not because of environmental reasons though :( I’m just cheap, sorry, frugal. Found out that I didn’t even like most of them. Looking to give them away :)

We (well I’m) trying to keep the wedding as locally operated as I can. Even now, with the advent of the green movement venders tend to give me this look when I say I want things that are environmentally responsible. For example, all of our invites are printed on 100% recycled paper and we are doing RSVP post cards instead of using extra envelopes. The center pieces are potted plants and hyacinth bulbs that guests can take home if they’d like while the favors are little match books filled with wildflower seeds.

It takes a little more planning bit it will be worth it!

My favorite venue is supes enviroresponsible, wind-powered and all.

I also thought of the idea of using real plates instead of paper or disposable, and donating them to a local charity that I used to volunteer for that hooks up families in need with household goods. (That’s Bridging Inc. for you Minnesota girls!)

I know tons of people are just on the eco-friendly thing for the trend of it, but I hope that idiotic remarks like the one in that magazine don’t cause some sort of eco-backlash, like, I DRIVE MY SUV BECAUSE GREEN IS OUT!

Boo - I don’t like their perspective, but I love yours. There’s certainly a lot of marketing hype around anything green right now, and I’ll roll my eyes at a lot of it. Like the carbon-credit market, and how non-regulated and sleazy it’s become. But there are so many things that we can do to be more eco-friendly without it being “hype.”

@Katie: totally agree on the thrift store! i needed a dress for the rehersal and one for e pics and instead of going to the mall i went to goodwill and found 2 gorgeous outfits and spent less than $20 on both!!

and im being as non wasteful as possible. not necessarily green but if i DIY fail i save as much of it as i can for another project since im making everything this is easy!

I did not read the article, but I think that it was referring to being green as a “fad” - to which I also roll my eyes. Having a green wedding only because you can call it organic, or green, or feel proud of yourself for respecting the environment or because you are using local vendors, is very shallow if in real life you don’t recycle, or don’t try to live low energy, ecc… Being green is a lifestyle that I respect and admire, as a wedding fad it’s cute but superficial.
What were the other “out” trends?

Lynn must have written the article. I bet she’s rolling her eyes right now!

But anyway, good post. I agree that even if you can’t pull off having a completely green wedding, every little eco conscious decision helps. and with the number of weddings that take place every year, it really adds up. I don’t think anyone is trying to judge anyone here, but the people who think being “green” is a fad that is unecessary or going to go away, think again!

I hear ya, sister! The green “trend” is really bittersweet to me. I hate how it is being marketed everywhere by companies who happen to use a green practice without much of an effort. Yet it’s nice because more green products are available to the masses and at prices that are getting more reasonable. Forget what the media is saying what’s in fashion or not, green’s always in!

I think that’s awesome. I think that another way to keep it green and less consumerist is try not to force bridesmaids to buy a whole new dress/ shoes/ everything.
I like your commitment. As a serious environmentalist, “green” isn’t just a trend to me. It’s not about going and buying a new couch because it uses bamboo fabric or something like that, it’s about NOT buying more crap in the first place!!!
