Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

Our Own Silhouettes

September 24th, 2010 @ 5:29 pm by Mrs. Knitting

Look at what I got Mr. Knitting to make me:

Yay for silhouettes of us! I’m so excited. As you might remember from this post, I am a huge fan of silhouettes. I’ve been toying with the idea of using them in our wedding almost since the beginning, but I still haven’t completely worked out how I’d like to do that. My current #1 idea is to use them to make a guestbook alternative. On a recent flight I treated myself to Martha Stewart Weddings (love!) and came across this idea:

Our Own Silhouettes : wedding crafts decor diy toronto Martha

Source

The picture is pretty small, but if you follow the link you can see the PDF really clearly. Basically it’s a poster with your names and wedding date that all the wedding guests sign on nice neat lines (appeals to the control freak in me!). You can then frame it with an Ikea frame and display it on your wall.

I really like this idea, but the Martha design doesn’t really appeal to me. I’m thinking instead of designing something similar using our silhouettes. And when I say designing I really mean making some vague mock-up on the computer and then badgering Mr. K to fix it for me because I don’t understand computers!

The thing is: I’m not sure if I want to do this because I would genuinely like something like a guestbook, or if it’s more because I’m having fun with paper projects (more about these once I’m actually done them) and “designing” things and want to make use of these silhouettes. Maybe it doesn’t matter…

What’s your favourite version of the guestbook?

My fiance is a great artist. He is painting a large (11″ x 17″) picture of us in black and white. We will have the area around the picture matted so people can sign around it. I think your idea is great too!

We did something similar for our wedding last year, super cute! I made our silhouettes, cut them our of nice paper and mounted than to a board for signing. It was a huge hit. I’m sure whatever you do will be fabulous:)

I’m not sure how to post a pic but our wedding was recently on StyleMePretty and there’s a pic there. I guess a link will have to do!

i have the same magazine and I too LOVE that idea. but I like yours better :)

I want to do it just because I don’t really like the idea of a traditional guest book. It seems like a book would just get tossed in a box someplace and never looked at again. At least this will be up somewhere so it can be easily seen. Love it

Awwww, cute sihouettes! You can use them on anything really, couldn’t you? Program covers, toilet signs, Bride & Groom chair signs. I like your guest book idea too, I really think a poster is the best way to go for guest books because it’s something you look at everyday. An album is something that goes in a closet and is viewed once a year!

I love this idea! The Martha idea is lovely, but the design isn’t my cup of tea either. Can’t wait to see how the silhouettes work out with it!

i LOOOVED that same guest book from martha. we happened to have a quaker wedding (my husband’s uncle is a quaker preacher and his entire family is quaker) and it is an old quaker tradition to have a certificate that is signed by all the wedding attendees. i made something similar up in illustrator and printed it on our large format printer at work and i LOVED the way it turned out!

How did he make these beautiful silhouettes? I love how they can be used around. They are a wonderful way to personalize everything.
