In one of my first posts, I told you about my multiple “this is the dress” feelings and never elaborated further. Ladies! Do not stress about this magical (and elusive) feeling. Do not anticipate crying. Do not think that everyone knows right away when she puts on her dress for the first time. Please also do NOT beat yourself up if you don’t feel comfortable with your body or none of the samples fit you. Also, for your information, a trunk show usually means they are showing the dresses the models wore in the photo shoot. They are TINY!
My mother was looking for a mother-of-the-groom (MOG) dress in the winter of 2009, right after we got engaged. Being her daughter and a self-proclaimed stylist extraordinaire, she naturally asked me to accompany her on the trip. We were looking for a gorgeous, budget-friendly MOG dress. We found a beautiful dress for her, but it was $400, so we said NFW and kept on truckin’. It was a busy Saturday at the gown store when my mother’s face lit up.
“Want to try on wedding dresses!?”
I can’t deny my mother when she lights up like that. She only gets that excited when she’s doing something she knows she is going to enjoy. cough :: dancing drunk in the garage until 3am :: cough
So we walked into the room and I politely told the saleswoman that I was looking for a form-fitting mermaid style with NO RUCHING! I began to try on all the ruched dresses the girl could find in the store. Hi, me not happy. I was aware that ruching is flattering for all figures. However, I also knew that I wanted to show off my hourglass shape, and adding additional fabric to my waist was going to minimize my silhouette. We ended up moving on to another store.
At this point, my mother was more excited to see me try on dresses for my wedding, still over two years away, than to try on dresses for herself. The sales associate was helpful, thoughtful, and listened to what I said. I tried on any dress that she handed to me. I walked out of the dressing room with a Symphony gown on, and immediately I received several compliments. I felt like Christina Aguilera in a Christian Lacroix one-of-a-kind gown. It hugged me in all the right places. Ugh! It was amazing. Shhhh! Don’t tell Adeline, but I still do have dreams about that dress. We didn’t take any pictures of the dress because most places do not allow you to photograph the dresses.

Don’t worry—we found Mom a dress that day, too. She looked amazing!
I didn’t want to commit so early on in the wedding-dress game, so I decided not to purchase her. I sat on the dream for a few months, and she was what I had in mind when I began looking again.
