Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

So there we were: me, my new husband, a few cases of wine and beer, and a pickup truck. We were free to go and do as we chose, no obligations, no reservations, spontaneously deciding each evening where we would lay our heads.

Well, that’s about half true. There was, in fact, quite a bit of spontaneity in our travels. And we did, in fact, not make many plans on where we would sleep. We did, however have a lot of people to visit in a very short time who were inconveniently spread over 7 states. So we had a tight schedule to stick to as we wandered through the most perfect time of year in the Northeast.

There really is nothing better than New England in the late summer. If you haven’t had the pleasure, let me fill you in on this little piece of heaven.

The beauty of New Zealand, our new home, is astounding. The vast rolling hills, expanses of wild coastlines, and the greatness of the fiordlands are overwhelming. When you drive through NZ you can practically feel the landscapes shouting at you. “Look at me! I am beautiful.”

But the humble beauty of New England does not shout.

It is hidden in crumbling rock walls and tree-covered hills. It is hidden in weathered barns and covered bridges. It is the beauty of a well-made chair crafted the 1800s and the man who sits in it, his familial connection to this place stretching back even longer. For me this simple, subtle beauty is comforting.

But it is also bittersweet; a reminder that for everything gained, something is lost.

I would love to take a trip like this through the new england area, perhaps in mid-fall when the air is crisp and the leaves are in full color. Sounds like you guys really made the most of your Home turf honeymoon! (Although New Zealand is a place on the top of my list of places to visit!)

Just gorgeous. I keep telling my sweetie how gorgeous the northeast is. My mom is from New York and most of her family still lives there. I love visiting and camping in the Adirondacks. It’s just beautiful.

This is, by far, my favorite time of year here (I live in Boston). Late summer and fall are spectacular. Now, if we could just do something about the winter and sopping wet spring ;-).

Great description of the soft, welcoming beauty of New England’s mountains. I’ll always love the Appalachians more than anywhere else in the world, though I drift a little farther south on the chain to the Blue Ridge and the Smokies. New England is wonderful in late summer, though it can get wicked hot sometimes - and no A/C anywhere.

That was a wonderful post. My family is from New England and I totally agree. Everything is just quiet and serene. I love it there.
