To Top It Off

September 27th, 2010 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Elephant

Oooooh, I wonder what this post could possibly be about?? If you haven’t already guessed, I’ll give you a little hint…

That’s right—cake toppers! When I first thought of cake toppers, I thought I would DIY some bling on our initials like this:

And then I started researching more on the web and noticed the ever-so-popular birds.

But then while flipping through the Knot magazine, I saw a picture of this cake and just had to have it!

This cake was perfect and helped to inspire our travel theme. After my other great experiences with Etsy and ordering our stamps, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to look around and see if I could get a custom cake topper fashioned like the suitcases you see on our inspiration cake.

I searched the polymer-clay creations and found this one…how perfect is that for us?

From Etsy Seller mudcards

It nails the interracial aspect of us, but maybe not so much the bride pulling the groom away from his Xbox 360. Nowadays, Mr. E barely has time to play games, so when he does I don’t have any problem with it. There may be a little bit in the budget for this to go next to or on top of the groom’s cake (which will have a gaming theme), so I’ll cross my fingers for that.

I messaged mudcards (Keren, who is the vendor who made Miss Cardigan’s topper) and asked if she could make a custom cake topper in our colors based on that Knot photo. Keren was awesome! She said she would make it at no charge and send me pictures. If I liked it, then I could purchase it; if not, then no harm no foul. About four weeks later, I received an Etsy conversation with pictures of the cake topper—I was so excited!

YAY!! It’s just what I was looking for. I love the initials on the suitcase, which will be the front of the cake. This will also help us when we begin the vendor search for a cake baker, making it easier to visualize our inspiration. And just because she’s a cutie, here’s Gypsy checking out the cake topper.

What are you doing for the top of your cake? Did you have an interesting or custom cake topper made?

I’m actually not doing a cake topper. Our cake is so unique that I thought if we added a topper it would take away from the cake. I do love your luggage topper, its so cute.

oh my goodness, i heart this cake topper for your wedding, miss elephant! as for us, we’re still figuring it out. i like the idea of a puffy red heart - simple and sweet. but there are so many other whimsical ideas to choose from!

We are going with a Lego themed cake topper using mini figures to represent us! I order the parts online from the pick-a-brick section and all arrived just the other week! Total cost for the mini-figures, some fencing, flowers, a green “lawn”, wine glasses and shipping to Canada was 17.00$ :)

We had a small art glass pumpkin. It was an engagement gift before we had decided on a fall theme. It ended up being perfect.

our cake topper was actually one of the most expensive things I “splurged” on…our cake itself was just three sheet cakes - but our topper was in the likeness of us in Chicago Cubs uniforms - handmade! it was AWESOME! everyone absolutely loved it and it’s something we get to keep for the rest of our lives. I think I spent $450 on it… :P but when i saw the site and this artist’s work, I just HAD to have it!

I looove those! We’re doing initials. I really wanted a custom made coast guard/bride topper, but read that the woman who makes them is always late and I didn’t find her soon enough to order them way in advance. Laaame.

Thanks everyone! I’m really excited to see this in action at the reception.

@staceysmith: The lego topper sounds so cute, and like a great deal!

@JuneBride_26June2010: That’s one of my favorite parts, the ability to keep it forever! That’s why I’m really considering getting another one for the groom’s cake that will look like us.

Mudcards made my topper too! I had her make miniature versions of my cat and dog holding a sign with our last name and wedding date. She’s awesome. She had no problem correcting a few things for me (my cat has a black nose and she had painted it pink, etc). I’m thinking of having her make one of me and my fiance sometime too, even though my wedding will be long over by the time I do that!

Love it! I’m addicted to cake toppers. I can’t decide what to have though. And etsy has made it much much worse!! (In a good way). I think I need a zillion cakes for all the toppers I like - how do I pick???

Oh, I adore it! That might be my favorite topper I’ve ever seen. It’s original, it’s not overly sappy, and it has two levels of meaning - the obvious one about your love of travel, and the hidden one about making your journey through life together. LOVE IT.
