Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

A Stockinged Bride

September 27th, 2010 @ 6:26 pm by Mrs. Husky

Having an outdoor wedding in October in Colorado can either be warm, sunny and mild, or cold, cloudy and bitter. Obviously, I hope for the former. Just look at the last three years in Beulah:

(thanks Weather.com Wedding Planner!)

As you can see, there’s no guarantee of a warm perfect day. So I’m preparing for the latter.

For our guests, we will have tents and heaters, like I mentioned here.

But to keep myself from chattering teeth, I’ll have this to wrap around my shoulders:

(source)

The wrap is beautiful, and I love the soft golden shade. But I also love my dress, and don’t want to hide it under a wrap until absolutely necessary. So what else could I cover up? Why, my legs of course!

Anyone else here a fan of Ravelry? That’s where all of my spare internet time was spent, pre-engagement. If you’re a knitter or a crocheter, and you’re not on Ravelry – well, you need to be! Moving on, I had seen the wedding stockings of another user, and declared them to be the perfect solution:

(source)

I actually started these puppies immediately after our engagement last August. But the dress I thought I was going to get was the wrong shade. When I ended up finding (and buying) the right dress, I was thrilled to realize the colors were perfect together!

I spent HOURS on these. So many hours that I can’t possible count. I had to knit, unravel, and re-knit so many times because the pattern was written for larger-legged ladies. But they turned out fabulously! Once I finished them, I had to decide if I wanted to wear a garter belt or sew in elastic. Due to the hip hugging of my dress’ fit, the garter belt seemed like it might be too clunky.

But I wanted them to stay up—hiking up my stockings all day didn’t seem ideal. Then I remembered the last pair of thigh-high stockings I bought had silicone backed elastic to help keep them up. Lightbulb!

After a fruitless search for silicone elastic by the yard, I ended up just buying a pair of thigh-highs with the “stay up top.” I removed the elastic top from the rest of the stocking, and sewed it into my stockings. The result was a little bit darker of a stocking top, but it’s not at all noticeable when they’re on. And besides, no one but me and Mr. Husky will ever know that! …except all of you, of course…

Post-wedding, I’ll add a photo of them with the dress. But until then, I will leave you with them hanging on the wall:

What steps are you taking to protect yourself from the elements? Did any of your projects take *way* longer than they should have?

Wow, I’m super impressed! I love knitting socks but I can’t fathom making thigh-highs like those. Amazing job!

Our wedding is still a year away, but the first thing I bought was the yarn I wanted to knit myself a wedding shawl. I spend all my time on Ravelry anyways, but now I’ve been searching and searching for the perfect lace wrap. My queue is getting pretty full of options… I need to choose soon because I’m a super slow knitter! :)

That wrap/scarf is so awesome! I was wondering where you got it since the Etsy store you indicated as your source only offered jewelry. If you don’t mind what material is it??

Those stockings are adorable as well!

you are a fantastic knitter, miss husky! and that weather channel tip is genius, especially since we are having a DW on the north shore of hawaii, where there is always a slight chance of rain. for us, we will have parasols for the ceremony, a tent for the reception and pashminas to keep the guests warm at night :)

Oh gosh, now I’m going to be on that wedding planner/weather.com website all day thinking about next April and whether we’ll have rain or shine!!! Ahhh!!! I know how you feel with the unpredictable element! So scary, at least you’re prepared.

@MissCarolyn: I attempted making my own shawl when I finished the stockings, but I was so over knitting by that time. In fact, I haven’t picked up a pair of needles since…::hangs head in shame::

@dez091011: Aw, shucks….:)

@Mrs Franks: So true! I’m hoping for just sun, and clear mild evening. Too much of an optimist, I think….

@purehart: The wrap is a pashmina cashmere, and I actually did purchase it from that shop - unfortunately, it looks like she now only has tie-dyed cotton scarves… :( If you are after something similar, you could probably request a custom item from her.
