Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Looming Projects and Decisions

September 27th, 2010 @ 12:47 pm by Mrs. Brooch

One of the awesome things about being a bride blogger is connecting with other brides. I’ve seen more wedding inspiration than I knew existed. There’s a lot out there! And it’s not just brides coming up with exciting ideas, either; the wedding industry has jumped onboard, too, with places like The Knot and Brides magazine joining the ranks and providing innovative ways to personalize your wedding.

One of the not-so-awesome things about this wave of inspiration: overkill. Some girls might not have a problem with this because maybe they know what they want or know when to stop looking, but for a big-time procrastinator and personwholikestoobsess—like me—all of the inspiration can be overwhelming.

Let me rephrase: all of the inspiation can be paralyzing.

Over the last year or so that I’ve known about wedding blogs and read them, I’ve accumulated quite the list of projects I want to do. Little and big stuff. Everything from sewing the ring-bearer pillow to creating bathroom baskets. Not to mention the save the dates, invitations, programs, blah, blah, blah—the list goes on. It’s madness, really. And instead of checking things off the list, I’m adding to it.

Do you do this, too?

I might be able to deal with the overwhelming amount of inspiration and long list of projects I want to do if there wasn’t an equally long list of things I have to do. Namely, choose a wedding gown, find a DJ, hire a florist…Need I say more?

Am I the only one behind on this stuff?

Mama Brooch told me when I get overwhelmed with my to-do list, I need to make a “did it” list. Yes, just to make myself feel better. (Aren’t moms great?) No, seriously. It helps. It puts things in persepective—for me, at least.

Even though a lot of the aforementioned little stuff hasn’t been done, some really big stuff has been.

  • We picked the date.
  • We found our venue.
  • We chose a caterer.
  • We hired a planner.

More on the latter two later. That’s big! Right? We’ve also been feverishly stacking our dough so that when it comes time to do all the little stuff, we’ve got the money to pay for it to happen.

I’m such a to-do list freak, though. A “did it” list hardly satisfies my craving to do something…With that being said, I’m going to try my darndest to get some wedding-related tasks done and report back with even just a few fewer looming projects and decisions.

Are there any other brides that feel overwhelmed by their to-do lists? Any advice on how to get some of this stuff done?

I got very overwhelmed and decided to make a typed list of everything I needed to get done for the wedding, and it is 3 pages long! I pull it out and decide on one or two “to do” items to tackle, and when those are done I move on and pick a couple of new items. If I think of them all at once it’s way too overwhelming, and seeing them completed (or with notes detailing my progress) makes me feel sooooo much better!

Love it! My “did it” list (wedding will be June 25, 2011):

Picked a venue (mom’s house)
Set a date
Hired a caterer, set a (tentative) menu
Winnowed the guest list
Mailed save-the-dates
Got a photographer (family friend)
Started imagining the dress with my dressmaker friend who is designing/sewing it

Still to-do or to-figure-out:

Officiant, vows
Reserve hotel rooms for guests
Florist
Hairdresser
Shoes/Jewelry
Rehearsal dinner
Sunday brunch
Music
Cake
Space: how to organize and decorate inside/outside of house for ceremony and reception
Design invitations (with printmaker friend who is making them for us as a wedding gift, bless her)

Probably lots of other stuff I’m not thinking of right now…

I just wrote out my own DIY To Do lost and promptly got so frustrated that I haven’t made anything since I did it. Counter-intuitive I know. But such is the life of a procrastinator.

I am a procrastinator but I also am a control freak. I’m still waiting on getting a date but it’s going to be a short short short wedding SO…. I already know most of what I’m going to do and I’m just waiting till I set the date and then start tackling it. Thank God I don’t watch that much TV, I am also incredibly lazy. Anything I can’t do, I’m farming it out. Yes Kinko’s cut the invites please, yes lady from WB classifieds you can design the invites and yes Etsy lady, your flower girl basket is really good, send it over :)

Reformed procrastinator here! My pile of magazines would have looked similar but I force myself to tear out the pertinent pages and toss the rest. Looking at my to do list, even if it were 90% complete, would still stress me out. I don’t know how you procrastinators do it! ;)

List maker here! I feel the need to make a did it list, just to decide what needs to be put on the to do list.

I don’t get over whelmed too often. Just every day. But there is this nice countdown clicker on my facebook that reminds me every day how much time I don’t have. I love that dang ticker. LOL

Overwhelmed doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel right now! We are in the thick of moving internationally right now and when we get home there’s a to do list a mile long and we only have a month to do it all! Yikes! I completely feel this post!
