Dressing the Boy

September 28th, 2010 @ 9:05 am by Ms. Sloth

Mr. S has basically left it up to me to decide what he wears in the wedding. He wants to have input, of course, but he’s okay with me choosing the color of his suit and tie because even he admits that he’s kind of clueless when it comes to fashion. The problem? I know nothing, and I mean nothing, about men’s clothing. I can dress a lady like nobody’s business, but the dudes? Nope. Especially not formalwear. I can pick out a sweater and a pair of jeans, but a suit, dress shirt, and tie? I’m lost.

He could just rent a tux, but meh. He’s not really a tux kind of guy, and our outdoor garden wedding isn’t really a tux kind of party. We decided that he’d buy a nice suit that he can keep forever. Most likely, it’ll be gray.

But beyond that, I’m confused. I know nothing about fabric, cuts, etc. I don’t know what gabardine is. I don’t even really know how men’s clothing measurements work. I have no idea what will look good on him. And we don’t have a ton of money to spend on it.

Fortunately, I do know what I like, and hopefully the stores that we go to will have some helpful salespeople. Or maybe our good friend, who is a lawyer and wears suits every day, will be able to come shopping with us and offer advice.

Anyway, here are some photos I’ll bring along when we shop for the boy’s suit.

Mrs. Mouse’s husband wore her father’s vintage suit. Love this.

But Mr. S might not want to wear a vest. So maybe something like this?

Nice. But maybe a little stuffy?

I dig these stripes, but if we’re going to spend money on a suit, he’ll be wearing it for years, and I think these might be too summery.

Well, at least we’ve still got plenty of time to figure it out.

What is your guy wearing for the wedding? Did you have a part in picking it out?

How about a seersucker suit? I’m not sure how often he’d wear it again or if it’s really his style, but it would suit a garden wedding perfectly and always looks so nice. Here’s a picture I found of a J.Crew one that looks to be gray:

aww love mr. mouse. the mouse wedding was one of my favs. i think the first suit you posted looks a little too stuffy-businessman-like, but you guys have a lot of time to shop around so no worries!

The Mr got his outfit from a vintage retro shop: beautiful black dress pants, a granddad shirt and a black waistcoat vest. He looked straight out of the 30’s, which was perfect for our wedding and went with my dress. Plus, the whole outfit cost a hardly anything. (But it did smell a bit strange when he first brought it home!)

Out of the 3, I truly like Mr. M’s look more. Ditch the Tom Cruise… I agree, very stuffy.

We just got the Mr.’s tux rented ;D

Cheers,
Fen

the pale grey is a handsome choice for mr. sloth :) as for our little beach wedding, i provided a bunch of options for mr. ostrich and let him decide. it was most important that he felt comfortable and liked his outfit…since he had no say in my dress :)

this is the suit we ended up going with…also grey!

My FI knew he wanted a medium gray suit, and he has to wear a suit to work everyday, so we headed over to men’s wearhouse and worked with a great consultant who took into consideration what we wanted, the wedding, helped us pick shirt/tie colors, etc. Plus, it was buy one, get one free.

FH is insisting on formal tails (my own dad wore a morning coat) but I just have to trust him. He does dress himself fairly well for work, and thankfully has an eye for color. He will be in shades of black and white while the groomsmen will have color pocket squares and black vests.

I recommend going to the Macy’s in Cherry Hill (no tax!) or if you don’t mind it being spendy (and lo, if you go here it will be spendy) Boyds. My husband wears a suit every day for work, so we went with the spendier Boyds, but it’s a classic navy blue suit (we got married in October) that he’ll be able to wear forever, and they tailor it for you there. If nothing else you should go to Boyds to feel super fancy and get an idea for what you like since everyone there is VERY helpful. Also we had the best assistance I’ve ever had in my life in the shirts department.

Good luck!

Ah, just read the “not a lot of money” part: Macy’s. Ask them to help you. You can get a good suit on sale for about $300 or less, and it will be better quality than the Mens Warehouse stuff, important for regular wear.

Another good spot is the Brooks Brothers outlet - my husband wears a suit every day and we have found some major scores there. (It is hit or miss somethimes though) He likes them cause he beats his clothes up and they tend to last longer than others we have bought.

Yes — I would definitely second the Brooks Brothers outlet. It’s not you’re usual outlet (piles of stuff, hard to find your size)–it’s like a regular store and they can get you other sizes from the outlets across the country. We got FI a gray suit for the wedding here and got the same ones for the groomsmen. As we have 3 groomsmen + FI we got to take advantage of 2 2 for 1 specials. I would highly recommend it!

I would definitely go with a merino- it’s one of the softest and high-quality wools. If you are looking for a high quality suit that will last, go to brooks brothers or for a better price, Joseph A. Banks.

It’s been really hard for me to figure out something for him. He shrugs his shoulders and goes, “I don’t know!” I like the inspiration you’ve pulled!

Oh man, guy’s suits are tough! We just went went out and tried on dozens of suits at a handful of stores until we found something we both liked–that’s what I’d recommend.
