Mrs. Lobster's Picture
Mrs. Lobster, Brooklyn Age and Occupation: 29, Finance Girl Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Boy Engagement Date: July 25, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Stage 6 Steiner Studios About Me: I'm a New York-born, Virginia-bred girl who's found her way back to the big city. Mr. Lobster and I met in grad school and have been together ever since. I'm clueless about DIY but am an avid online shopper and love all things polka dots, stripes, and ruffles! When I'm not making wedding lists, you can find me looking for snacks, watching Gilmore Girls, or hanging out with Mr. Lobster and our new puppy Buddy! We are planning a fancy-pantsy Brooklyn wedding for a hot New York summer night which is sure to be a misadventure in the making.
About Mrs. Lobster

After 5 nights in Moorea, we headed off to Bora Bora for the last part of our trip. It was amazing. Everything you’d expect “paradise” to be!

Bora Bora is a one hour flight from Papeete, Tahiti, where the main airport is for French Polynesia. It’s an easy flight. Unlike Moorea, Bora Bora is a collection of smaller islands called motus. This means there aren’t roads between islands and only boat transfers, which isolates you mostly to your resort. This is *perfect* if you’re looking for true relaxation and luxury, which is exactly what the Lobsters ordered.

When you land in Bora Bora, you get off your airplane, walk about 200 feet to the other side of the airport and find your resort boat pick-up.

After a long day of traveling (i.e. waiting hours in the Tahiti airport), we walked into our overwater bungalow and saw this waiting for us:

Champagne and fresh fruit? Yes, please!

And this - a fragrant herb decoration made for honeymooners. It smelled really pretty.

Our bungalow ROCKED. Yes, ours wasn’t different from the others on the resort, but there was just so much room. Much bigger than my apartment, for sure. There was a deck with steps into the lagoon, we had a sitting room, a bathroom with large jacuzzi tub, and then the bedroom with mondo closet space. Each of these rooms also had a floor to ceiling window that opened to a lagoon and mountain view.

Much like Moorea, we spent a lot of time just hanging out in our room. There were even floor panels all throughout the bathroom looking into the lagoon. Here are some pics of our bungalow:

Our first morning was exhausting. Not only did we have to find the buffet breakfast, but we had to tackle our to do list. One thing about the buffet breakfast—awesomeness! Choose your own omelet bar, pastries, fresh fruit, bacon and potatoes (my go tos) everyday. They also had a juice of day, guava, watermelon mango mix, etc.

There are 5 cabanas available first come first serve by the pool. We hung out there to do our crossword puzzles in the morning.

One day we went off resort to do a lagoon tour with shark watching, swimming with sting rays and snorkeling. Here we are far out in the lagoon (and yet still able to stand in the shallow water) petting sting rays.

Every day we’d try to make it to the sunset bar to catch a drink and a view like this:

Bloody Mary’s

Whenever we talk to someone who’s been to Bora Bora, they told us to go to Bloody Mary’s—an off-resort restaurant on the “main island.” The allure is that it’s always fresh catch of the day and instead of a menu, they show you what they have, grill it, and serve it. Mr. Lobster and I were pretty excited given the opportunity to leave the resort for “cheaper” eats. Bloody Mary’s was a 30 min boat ride from the Four Seasons:

It felt kinda tourist trappy but it’s a Bora Bora institution started by some ex-pats in the 1970s. The inside floor is all sand and you sit on these little stools. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced…except later when we realized our boat ride cost us $60 (at that rate, the price of dinner was the same as staying on the resort).

Spa Time, Again?

Yes, I indulged in 2 spa visits in 10 days. What of it?? This time I got a hot stone massage and it was wonderful. I felt like butter afterward. The Four Seasons spa was lovely.

Quick Tips for Bora Bora & The Four Seasons

  • Don’t plan on leaving the resort much. Only the tours do free pick-ups.
  • Bloody Mary’s is one of those so-called “must do’s”- I am neutral about that.
  • Don’t do the dinner buffet (unless you really want to eat a lot). The food was not great and it was $65 per person. The in-room service or fancy restaurant have better food and costs about the same.
  • Check out the sunset bar. They have little nibbly snacks to accompany your drinks
  • The service at the Four Seasons was top notch. Everyone is super friendly and makes you feel like you’re the only ones there.
  • Water is freely available, so there’s no need to buy it in bulk. They have bottles at the spa and gym as well as passed ice water for you by the pool.
  • Check out the free DVD library! We watched Bridget Jones’ Diary and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Internet is free at the business center
  • Book your spa services early. While at Moorea, we could walk in, at the Four Seasons appointments were more limited. Same goes for tours.
  • Enjoy the little things! Snacks, ice water, frozen drink shots and cold towels were passed around the pool throughout the day. There’s ample sunblock and towels. One day we got complimentary chocolate chip muffins brought to our room. The in-room coffee maker was pretty good + bottled water during turndown service. You can call them for a golf cart pick up to the spa.
  • Free activities to keep you occupied: paddle boarding, tennis, volleyball, basketball, off-hut snorkeling. You are also able to use the spa amenities without booking a treatment (really, just the hot tub and relaxation room).
  • There weren’t as many fish in the lagoon as there was in Moorea so that’s kind of a bummer for us since we saved our overwater bungalow for Bora Bora (but it was still worth it)

After 10 days with my honey, the honeymoon was over and it was time to return to reality. As sad as I was to leave Bora Bora, I am happy now to start the rest of our life together!

That’s it for the honeymoon recaps, I’ll be back (hopefully soon) with pro pics. Bye for now!

If you went back, would you go back to Moorea or just Bora Bora? I would love to go and it seems like many people just prefer Bora Bora….curious what you think!

These are such awesome honeymoon recaps! Thanks so much. Great tips. Can I ask if you felt the overall cost was worth it? Especially with the price of dinners, boat taxis, etc, it’s a pricey trip - just wondering if you think it was worth it considering there are other beautiful spots out there, (albeit maybe less so!) but cheaper? My hubby and I are thinking of going and I’d really love to hear your thoughts! Thanks. :-)

I’ve loved reading your honeymoon recaps. I went on the EXACT same honeymoon in late June, so it is fun to see someone else’s take on it. We stayed at the same hotels and did the same things! I am glad you enjoyed it as much as we did!!

Great recaps, Lobster! Mr Jelly and I stayed at the Le Meridien and I think the Four Seasons was a better choice. It seems like the service at French hotels kinda sucks, and Four Seasons is an American-owned hotel chain. Our boat ride to Bloody Mary’s was free though…go figure?

@Kate: thanks for your comment! Tahiti is definitely on the pricier side for honeymoon destinations. There are lots of places Mr. Lobster and I considered but we wanted to go somewhere we might not otherwise consider if it wasn’t our honeymoon. We’ve been lucky to travel to lots of places already - Europe, Australia, South America, Morocco. I think you can do it up right in a lot of places equally beautiful so it’s definitely worth doing your homework and comparing the destinations.
@Miss Jellyfish: Good to note! Yeah I was surprised that the Four Seasons would charge for that but maybe it was an oversight. I probably should have asked either way.
@fabu: I would have done more research about the different islands. Don’t get me wrong, Moorea was beautiful and fun - a lot more activity going on. Bora Bora just felt more pampered since there wasn’t much to do except admire the scenery :)

@alvina: drool times two! UNREAL!

@Mrs. Lobster: as an east coast girl flying out to the South Pacific - was the flight time totally brutal? We’re very seriously looking at either Tahiti or Fiji for our honeymoon, but wondering if the travel time from NYC would totally kill us (and the mood.) Did you hate it, or was it manageable?

@TotesMagotes: we’re doing Moorea/Bora Bora next year for our HM. We are flying from philly. but want to break up the flights so it’s not brutal. So we fly out to L.A. for one day then leave the following night on the redeye to head to Tahiti…
