About Mrs. Socks

If you live in Pennsylvania, you might be familiar with the ridiculous, old fashioned, utterly impossible to understand liquor laws this state has.

Curse you, Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board! : wedding alcohol philadelphia Pa Whin

Source

If you don’t live in Pennsylvania, here’s the quick run-down: the sale of liquor of any kind must be sold in a state-regulated and owned store, which means no booze in the grocery stores, but more importantly, you are quite limited to the wines offered in the state-owned stores. In order to find rare/obscure wines, there is a long process to go about getting what you’re looking for, as opposed to other states, where many independently owned specialty wine stores may carry rare wines.

Okay, so I’m done boring you about Pennsylvania liquor laws. Here’s where it affects me and Mr. Socks:

We came up with a wonderful, perfect, beautiful, amazing, DELICIOUS wine list for our wedding. I mean, this thing was beautiful, people. It had a wide array of flavors to please any palate and they were obscure enough to not be overpriced ($10-15 per bottle on average). We spent a LONG time on this wine list.

And then we handed it over to our venue, and lo and behold, only one of them was available without special ordering, which could take weeks and weeks, which we don’t have.

I might have cried over this stupid wine list. (PM me if you want it, and tell me how delicious it is if you use it…sigh.)

So Mr. Socks and I went back to the drawing board and had to find wines that weren’t quite so obscure but weren’t more than $15 in most cases (we went over on a couple of bottles).

Wanna know our final wine list? I’ve included some tasting notes for those who are interested in purchasing your own wine for your wedding! We’re still thinking about getting one Rose wine, but we haven’t decided on one yet! If I could, I would choose Guigal Tavel Rose, which ranges from $15-20 per bottle, but it is not available through Pennsylvania. (Of course, I can pick it right up at my local liquor store where I live in New Jersey, but my venue cannot buy it since they’re in PA…ARGHH)

La Crema Chardonnay
Sonoma County, California

Expressive nose with full aromas of ripe pear, apple, and a touch of spice. On the palate you get a creamy, smooth texture and flavors of ripe pear fruit with a good dose of vanilla spice, oak and honey.

Trimbach Gewurztraminer
Alsace, France

Exotic, spicy aromas of lychee and orange peel. Rich and intense, this Gewürztraminer is luscious and well balanced with a dry, spicy finish.

Errazuriz Sauvignon Blanc
Valle de Aconcagua, Chile
Pale gold in the glass, this wine has a nose of green olives, cut grass. In the mouth it is quite mineral in character with nice unripe apples, wet stones, and a beautiful finish that is slightly savory.

Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi
Campania, Italy
Deep garnet in the glass, this wine has a floral nose that reaches to the extreme of candied grapes with a little dried herbs mixed in. In the mouth it is lush and juicy with flavors of blackcurrant and a toasty quality that resolves to black licorice as the wine finishes.

Perrin Les Christins Vacqueyras
Rhone, France

Clearly a wine from a warm place, with its amber hues and richness of texture. The nose is reminiscent of morello cherries, flowers and licorice. On the palate it shows an unctuous texture and is rich and concentrated.

Simonnet Febvre Pinot Noir Reserve
Chablis, France

Displays typical Pinot strawberry and dark red fruit flavours, medium acidity, earthy supple tannins with good length and soft finish.

Bleasedale Cabernet Sauvignon Mulberry Tree 2005
Langhorne Creek, Australia

Deep ruby. Strongly perfumed bouquet offers suave blackberry, mulberry, cedar, rose and minerals. Silky and sweet, with inviting dark berry preserve flavors, gentle tannins and impressive finishing energy.

There you have it! In the end, we’re very happy with our final list, though it’s not quite the quality of wines we would have had if our original wine list could have been ordered. (Through no fault of our venue—it’s entirely PA’s stupid laws!)

We’ll have descriptions of all of the wines (and beers—more to come on that!) so our guests can make an educated decision of the wine that best suits their palate.

Did you have a run-in with a stupid law that prevented you from doing something you wanted for your wedding? PA brides, have you had issues getting the wines you wanted because of these silly laws?

We were in Sonoma and wanted to have a bunch of bottles shipped back to PA for our engagement party, and hey! You can’t have wine shipped to a private address in PA. So it was either bring all those bottles on the plane, or ship it to my parent’s place in Virginia and drive it up to PA. We went with the latter.

Other annoying things? Only being able to buy a certain number of cases of beer at our local shop (last time I went to the bottle shop it was 2 in a 24 hour period) Not being able to get cheap wine from Costco/Sams Club. The list goes on and on. It makes me miss Virginia booze laws every weekend.

In Sweden they have similiar laws and on their day somewhat equivalent to 4th of July the line was so big we had to wait outside to be allowed inside to wait again. Drives me crazy, o and those stores close at 2 on Saturday!!!

PA laws SUCK! We had to special order all of our wine…through the state store…probably tripling the price. So freaking annoying. Especially when we live less than an hour from a huge discount wine store in Delaware.

I always laugh that you CAN buy alcohol in grocery stores in the states. Or GAS STATIONS. Totally blows my mind :)

Those laws are mad! Ye poor divils! Btw, what country you in, Sapphiresun? We can buy drink in grocery stores in Ireland freely, although not on Sunday.

Was there any chance you could buy them yourself in NJ and give them to your venue? I know some liquor licenses don’t allow that, but I thought I’d try.

Did you know
that its also illegal in most counties of PA to have more than six women living together? Cuz apparently it must be a brothel if that many women live together!

I am SO not a political person, but Maryland’s wine laws have me writing congresspeople every few days. Good job on not letting the liquor lobby (because that’s who pulls the strings here!) destroy your day.

Waiting to run into a similar problem. All alcohol, including wine, must be sourced by the on-site caterer so I can’t bring in my “only sold at the winery, direct to consumer” favorite PA wine. I think the approach we’ll take is show us what you can get, even if it fills a 3-ring binder.

If your venue/caterer told you that they couldn’t special order your wine selections or it would take “weeks and weeks,” they’re either lazy or incompetent. All decent restaurants and event venues regularly place special orders to get the wines they need, and most have direct relationships with the (privately-owned) wholesalers who fulfill the orders. Your venue should have checked who carried the items you wanted and found out whether they would have arrived in time. In the Philly area, I’d be surprised if anything would have taken more than a week.

By the way, this process is pretty much the same everywhere in the US: restaurants and venues must buy from wholesalers, with whom they place regular orders to get the products they need. Not many states allow you to supply the wine to your caterer, nor can your caterer just run down to Total Wine or whatever and pick up what they need off the shelf.

Buying wine in PA can be a pain for consumers but for businesses it’s not much different than other states.

Buy in Delaware.

We’re getting married in Baltimore but are buying from Costco in Delaware. Marylands loss for having stupid laws re: liquor that prevents us from pricing our alcohol from California.

New York auto insurance companies offer same policies and coverage whether you are an adult or a teenager. They only vary with the rates. This company offer multiple auto insurance rates through website and give you ability to purchase from one place; they are ahead of other online insurance companies. Start your quote to see how companies compete for your business. I have saved money when i compare and switch. @Nathan: My venue is neither lazy nor incompetent. They did everything they could to tell me that they could order everything, but that it was not guaranteed to arrive in time for my wedding. I made the final decision to change the list rather than risk not getting the wines we ordered and paid for in time.
@Encore: @ejoyb: I wish we could buy in Jersey or Delaware, but since our venue is in PA, they must comply with Pennsylvania’s laws and order through the state store.

@Miss Socks: If your venue was in Delaware, and they told you that your wines had to be ordered from the wholesaler and weren’t guaranteed to arrive on time, would you blame the Delaware ABCC?

Wow, I never realized how lucky I am living in Illinois! I can get any liquor pretty much anytime, anyplace anyhow.
