Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

Choosing Our Theme

September 29th, 2010 @ 12:18 pm by Mrs. Lioness

I love a good theme party. After all, my first date with Mr. Lion was to a theme party! I wanted our wedding to have a theme…one that suited our setting, like Miss Starfish. I wanted our theme to suit our style, like Mrs. Cowboy Boot. I wanted to do something classy and understated; although, let’s face it…even the over-the-top themes are still pretty awesome:

Our ceremony and reception will be held in the same venue; the ceremony will be outdoors in the garden and the reception inside in the ballroom. So, we knew we needed a little garden inspiration.

Our venue is an antebellum home, built in 1797. It contains original artwork on the walls and original bricks on the garden patio. So as you can imagine, we wanted to incorporate a vintage element into our wedding style. Maybe not antebellum, per se (I don’t think I could walk in a Scarlet O’Hara dress)…mid-20th century was more our style. Why not make our vintage style “old meets older?”

(Love love love those little sleeves! So Old Hollywood)

So we’ve found inspiration that captured our vintage venue’s style, now we just needed something that represented our personal style. I don’t know if you’ve caught onto this by now, but Mr. Lion and I are just absolute goofballs. You add goofy to stylish and you get something called whimsical.

However, there’s always just plain old goofy. In my opinion, this can still end up looking pretty beautiful at a wedding, mostly because it’s genuine.

Does your wedding have a theme? How did it evolve from your inspirations?

Carnival!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My venue’s only rule (a winery), “no circus animals please”
I’m having a ton of fun with the theme tho - my escort ‘cards’ are popcorn boxes filled w/ goodies including wine charms made in the theme with everyone’s name. I LOVE THEMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t WAIT to hear more about yours!!

oh my do I love theme parties? They are my FAVORITE. But… we don’t have a real theme at our wedding other than the overall “classic with a trendy twist” feeling that I’m aiming for. But mark my words, my Bachelorette bash will be a full blown themed event…. ahhh can’t wait!!

At first, all the things I wanted to do for the wedding were just a random jumble of stuff I found on wedding blogs. Bunting! Flags! Jam! Birdacges! Vintage furniture! Grass-coloured shag rug to make and indoor “garden” area for us and the officiant! (Ok, that last one was inspired by a rug in Ikea, and I still want to do it).
I found these adorable invitations with a tandem bike on them.
Then, my mum pointed out to me that tandem bike isn’t very “us”. Until a month ago, neither of us even owned a single-person bicycle! That made me think about stuff - the apple invites that are so cute… cute, but I actually don’t like eating apples. We don’t have an apple tree. Stuff like that.

Then we thought for a bit about what we like, and one thing we both love, and that brought us together, is to read. So now we are planning vaguely book-themed wedding. We’ll still use the birdcages, and I hope we use the rug (they’re both the perfect apple green colour), but picking the book theme has helped make the wedding more ‘us’.

Although, I’m still hoping that some pretty, candy-coloured bunting will at least show up at my shower or something! :)

oooh - those dangling novels by the tree are wonderful! and i have no doubt you and mr lion are going to have one marvelous vintage wedding!

the ostrich wedding is all about “a sunset celebration by the sea!” confetti, garland, sea coral and lots of candles. our colors are inspired by the hues of a tropical sunset. in theory it sounds pretty and i’m hoping everything turns out like we’ve hoped!

i cannot wait to see the lioness wedding pics!

Those garden inspiration photos are gorgeous! I’m a big fan of whimsy in weddings too - we’re trying to incorporate some of that into our wedding!

our theme was originally just “UF” - where we met, fell in love, got engaged, will wed…

but now it’s evolving to a sort of “old florida” style, mostly due to our save the dates and the discovery of an amazing artist.

I love how you took into account the venue/setting of your wedding into your theme! Our venue is a take on a scottish golf club, so that’s kinda travel - right? haha.

@rycrafty: That’s a very good point. It’s hard to have a theme just for the sake of having a theme. You have to find something that’s you! I love the book-themed idea. There’s a lot you can do with that!

@Miss Ostrich: I know! I loved that idea. I think that might actually be more appropriate for our shower than our wedding. Sister Lioness has thrown together a kind of Alice in Wonderland theme, so it might work out well with that! Yours sounds AWESOME!

@kaitybird: Please oh please oh please post pictures of all of that on the gallery :)

@Miss Elephant: Golf reminds me of vacation, and so does travel! Yes, I’d say that works :)

looks a lot like our wedding. We are rather goofy but for one day I wanted to try a bit of class so we too have labeled everything whimsical.
