Postcard Guestbook

September 29th, 2010 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Guestbook-wise, I originally wanted to do a Quaker style wedding certificate. But in the end, I didn’t have time to design one and didn’t have the $$ to have someone design one for me. So, instead I went the route of vintage style postcards. I stuck 2 stamped postcards in glassine envelopes for each guest/family, one for them to mail to whomever, and one addressed to us.

Well, with only 19 wedding guests in tow, that narrowed down to only about 7 couples/families. That means, essentially I should have received about 7 postcards in the mail. Nope. It was a postcard guestbook FAIL.

Out of 19 people/7 families, I received 4 postcards, and  2 of them were from the same person. Hehe. Yup, my bestie mailed me back both her postcards.

I shouldn’t really be surprised, I mean only half our guests mailed back their RSVP, so why would I think any different with pre-stamped postcards?!

In case you were wondering what the postcard said: “Hey Auntie! We have a groom over here!!! A traditional wedding $3000-10,000 plus dollars. Seeing your groom shake his tail feather in a grass skirt and coconuts…priceless.” Bestie is referring to this. Her other postcard talked about her daughter (our flower girl) running away from the aisle. ;)

Either way, I’m gonna show you how we decided to keep our (4) postcards…

In this super cute wooden album we got at the Aloha Swap Meet for $8.00! Woot, woot!

I love this album because you can easily display the postcards and easily pull them out of the album to read the postcards. Double score. Not that it takes much to read 4 postcards. :P

We had spare postcards, so I decided to stick them in the album too, that way the album looked fuller.

It’s a shame my idea didn’t work as hoped, but ehh…what can you do.

Did you/do you have high hopes for guests to complete a small task/favor for you? What was/is it?

sorry you didn’t get as many postcards back as you would have liked. Thats too bad. At least the ones you did get back are cute :)

I love this idea, and the book is just BEAUTUFUL. If I was having a destination wedding I would totally steal it.

I’m trying not to depend on our guests too much for meaningful things… I hate being disappointed.

We did the same thing (and even had some of the same postcards!). We had more people so we got back more than 4, but I was still sad that we didn’t get them all back. They all had stamps so I was hoping people would just send them back before they left Hawaii.

However, we haven’t yet figured out what to do with them yet. They’re sitting in an envelope and it’s been almost a year. The book you have looks great!

mr ostrich and i were also thinking of doing the vintage postcard guest book for our beach wedding…but have them write them at the reception! we’re still on the fence about it, but your little album makes it definitely tempting!

Sushi! So great to see you back here! Super cute idea. :-) I think it’s hard to get people to sign the guestbook no matter what you do - our sign-at-the-reception and during cocktail hour book also only got a few signatures!

That’s a great idea - the worry that no one would send them back stopped me from doing something similar!

That is really too bad - such a cute idea!

I did a tally for my guestbook idea as well - I was surprised that not everyone took the time to sign it. I mean, 2/3 of the guests did - but many important people did not - including my own father! These things happen I guess.

Too bad, it’s no fun when the guests don’t play along. Oh well, good idea in theory!

Amazing Idea!!! What if you were to photocopy the writing on the postcards on a nice heavy weight paper? You could then cut them to the same size as the postcard and avoid taking them out to read them. It would probably make it hold up better than taking them in and out, fill the photo book up more and make you read the postcards and smile, even when your not really looking for a pick me up!

Such a cute idea, bummer that barely any sent them back!
We asked our 221 guests to upload their photos onto our photoshare site, and only 5 of them have done so! Talk about disappointing!

How many did you have? We sent out 800 invites and I am trying to decide how many I should get?

@Christy: 800 invites?! wow!! That’s a lot of guests. Well, just like programs, you figure one per couple or family (vs. one for each person). So I would figure probably less than half…maybe a bit more than a third of your guest list. Are you planning of giving them two postcards, one for them to send back to you and one to keep? That will add to your total too. We only had 20 guests, so it wasn’t a big issue for us.
