Ms. Sloth, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 35, Account Manager and Fashion Blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Design Admin Engagement Date: December 25, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Bartram's Garden About Me: I'm an internet junkie and music snob with a good eye for a bargain. I couldn't live without thrift store shopping, cheeseburgers, sushi, Coke Zero, websites devoted to silly photos of baby animals, Photoshop, and Mr. Sloth. Speaking of which, he and I are a pair of goofball homebody nerds who love our beagle (the most ridiculously adorable dog EVER) to an embarrassing degree. We're planning a low-key and intimate yet festive and quirky outdoor wedding with DIY details and deeply personal touches, and it's all taking place in the city where we fell in love and call home: Philadelphia.
About Ms. Sloth

About once a week, when Mr. S isn’t around, I try on my prom/wedding dress with a pretty pair of shoes to make sure that I still like it. And I do. With some minor modifications, I think it might be the one. But I still keep looking.

I’ve fallen for some very simple but much more expensive gowns, but I’ve also been looking at some white or ivory bridesmaids dresses. They’re fabulous for someone like me, who doesn’t want anything too poufy or fancy.

Here are some of my favorites:

This Vera Wang bridesmaid gown comes in a color called “sand dune,” which is apparently closer to ivory in real life. I think it’s elegant and simple and gorgeous.

Joielle doesn’t have a photo of the dress in white or ivory, but it does come that way, and it’s just so purdy.

Here’s another understated beauty by After Six:

I think that my favorite thing about these dresses (besides how affordable they are) is that they’re so simple that I could wear some funky accessories. That’s kind of how I roll in real life, anyway—simple, basic clothing with a giant necklace or a bright scarf or some kick-ass boots. I think that one of these dresses would look amazing with a bright fascinator—or a statement necklace, or shoulder-grazing earrings. Right?

Would you consider wearing a bridesmaids dress instead of a traditional bridal gown?

I was never against getting a bridesmaid dress in white or ivory, but I think I’m the opposite of you! I tend to wear more detailed clothing, and not wear jewellery. My dress has lots of embroidery (but not much sparkle! yay!) so I’m going to keep it simple with accessories.

I do love that Vera Wang dress you’ve posted, though.

I would totally consider a bridesmaid dress instead of a wedding dress. For me, I’m leaning away from strapless because I’m a busty gal… and there are so many more strapped options in the world of bridesmaids. Plus, I’m not a frilly kind of girl, so the simplicity of BM gowns appeals to me. I’m definitely not ruling it out!

Have you looked at J Crew wedding gowns? I think you would love their Silk chiffon Arabelle crinkle gown (which doubles as a bm gown in other colors. I tried it on and it was beautiful, but not what I was going for. I ended up getting a different J Crew dress (the bow monde!).

if i didn’t go with my dress {which i’ll be posting about soon!}, i would have also gone with a simple “bridesmaid” dress and sprinkled it with a deco necklace and earrings. i can’t wait to see your lovely dress!

yeah, i’m pretty sure i’m going to go with a bridesmaid dress, because i really want a sort of evening gown look - and the price of wedding dresses kind of makes me sick. turns out bridesmaid dresses look like a good solution.

I love the Vera Wang and the last one! I considered getting a bridesmaid dress at one point, too!

I did consider it and did do it. :) I wore a Waters Bridesmaid gown in chocolate. It was the perfect dress for getting married on the beach in HI.

I really like the last one…simple and elegant. I wouldn’t be opposed to getting a bridesmaid dress and roll out the fab accessories.

But it’s one way or the other
1. simple dress, dolled up accessories
or 2. extravagant dress and simple accessories…

hmmm… the first one might be cheaper.

xoxo,
Fen

up. That was the plan. But then I went to the Franklin Mills outlet mall near you, wandered into Group USA and bought a very plain wedding dress off the sale rack and had the train cut off. Now I wish I new someone who wanted it. Super simple, A line, size 8, no train! lol

I have that vera wang dress in black. I got it for only $25. It was way too long for me though, so I’m in the process of shortening it so I can wear it to a wedding I’m attending next month.

If I were to get married again (vow renewal or go back in time) I would consider a BM dress too. It didn’t even occur to me at the time to try that. (Don’t get me wrong though, I LOVED my dress).
I would like to advise against After Six (that is of course, if you haven’t already ordered it). My BM dresses were by After Six and they were made HORRIBLY! The hem and seams were all uneven :-/
