Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

Hey America. You’re So Fine.

September 29th, 2010 @ 1:27 pm by Mrs. Glasses

So, I know what you’ve probably been thinking. You’ve been thinking, “Miss G., I thought you were having a DIY wedding. So far I’ve only seen your half-assed save the dates and some Etsy invites with a pathetic excuse for wrap around DIY labels. When am I gonna see some crafts?”

Well sit tight my pretties. Mr. G and I are officially unemployed. We’re choosing to be unemployed until after the wedding (hopefully not too long after the wedding!). In a few days, we’ll be hopping off the plane at LAX with a dream and our cardigans. We’ll be living off our savings until we find jobs which means we can’t be frivolous. And I haven’t watched American TV in 3 years.

What does all this mean? For the next month, until the wedding, we will be doing nothing but sitting in front of the TV catching up on all the shows we’ve missed… I’ve heard Glee, How I Met Your Mother, and Modern Family are pretty epic? Well, anyway, we’ll be parking ourselves in the living room and crafting, crafting, crafting until our fingers fall off. It’s all part of our plan to try not to spend our savings away on Chipotle, trips to the beach bars, and Jamba Juice…all of which I’ve been craving for 3 years!

We are going into what I call execution phase.

We have saved up all DIY and major decisions (oh, linen colors!) until we get to America. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to show you how to put on a wedding in a month. Here is what we need to do:

I don’t know if that list was for you or for me. But it’s intimidating, isn’t it?

I have to admit I’m a bit scared of moving back. I think I forgot how to be American. How do you tip again? Japan is so safe and America is so…well…unsafe. I mean, Mr. G and I love Antoine Dodson as much as the next guy but we’re also worried about being majorly culture shocked. Still, I couldn’t be more excited to finally move back home, see my family and friends, and eat decent Mexican food again—all with my Essex boy in tow. Please forgive me if I’m not around for a bit. I’m coming home baby!

I like to be in America. Okay by me in America. Everything free in America Skyscrapers bloom in America. Cadillacs zoom in America. Industry boom in America. Twelve in a room in America. Lots of new housing with more space. Lots of doors slamming in our face. I’ll get a terrace apartment. Better get rid of your accent.

Life can be bright in America.

While I work on wedding stuff, what other TV shows and movies should I catch up on in the 3 years I’ve been gone?

Get ready for reverse culture shock! (and the feeling that everyone in customer service is extremely rude).

But I’m sure the wedding/all your loved ones will go far to help break you in ;)

Also Community is a hilarious show if you get through all the others you mentioned :)

As a newly married DIY bride, I have to say….your list is terrifying. I finished a lot of that with months to spare, and the weeks leading up to my wedding were still insane. My had is off to you, because you will need every ounce of positive juju coming your way this next month!!

Have a great trip! I’d watch Dexter. Not very weddingish and I haven’t seen past season 1, but what I have seen is awesome.
