A Very Special Ring

September 30th, 2010 @ 7:02 pm by Mrs. Dolphin

You probably think this article is about our wedding rings. Yeah, they’re pretty special, but this story is about another whole ring. It’s about Mr. Dolphin’s Great-Grandmother’s wedding ring.

A Very Special Ring : wedding family gainesville rings Mrs Gat

The 3 rings: On my left hand, my engagement ring. On my right hand, a silver promise ring given to me by Mr. Dolphin on Christmas Day 2006, and Mr. Dolphin’s Great-Grandmother’s pink gold wedding ring stacked on top.

When I was trying to come up with my “something old,” as the tradition goes, I couldn’t figure out what it would be.

Mr. Dolphin’s Mama came to the rescue and gave me this little pink gold ring to wear. Not only did I think the ring was absolutely beautiful (took me a few weeks after our wedding to hand it back over to Mr. Dolphin’s Mama, as it had to go to Maui first), but it also had such a strong history in Mr. Dolphin’s family. And, a fabulous story. Oh, I love jewelry with a story!

I could tell you the story, but Dolphin Mama does it so well:

The ring was my Mother’s Mother’s wedding ring (her name was Mary Elizabeth), and it’s 18kt pink gold. When my Grandmother was dying, she was only 55, my Mom and my Aunt Eva (who passed away in ’02. I miss her sooo much) took care of her and the younger children. My Mom got the ring and always told me never to tell Eva (????). My Mom gave me the ring to wear when I was pregnant with Mr. Dolphin because my wedding ring wouldn’t fit my fat fingers. I wore it through all three pregnancies :). YOU are the only other person besides my Grandmother to wear it on her wedding day. How cool is that?

Pretty darn cool.

Did you wear anything extra special on your wedding day?

Love this! I wore a very special Belgian lace veil from passed down from my grandmother to me - you can read the full story here (it’s quite similar to yours!): http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/04/08/something-old-something-new%E2%80%A6/

Lovely story. My engagement ring was my great grandmother’s….she was married in 1922. I also am the only one to wear it other than here. So special.

Love! And I love pink gold too.

I’m having a diamond from one of P’s granny’s rings (I don’t think it was an engagement ring…) in my wedding ring. We’re getting the wedding ring custom-made.

The ring the diamond came from once had a pair of diamonds - the other one is in P’s step-dad’s wedding ring, which really makes me feel like part of the family.

That is so touching! What a special “Something Old”. I didn’t wear my something old, but had it tied around my bouquet. It was a vintage hankie that my great grandmother had given to my grandma as a gift.

Such a gorgeous story! I know my nan wants me to do something for her on the day - but she hasn’t decided what it is for me yet. :)

My e-ring is my husband’s late-grandma’s ring. His grandpa gave it to us, and it’s the most beautiful gesture ever.

That’s a beautiful story, I love it. My something old was similarly precious to me: one of my grannies most favorite pendants which she wore so very often. She passed away unexpectedly in 2005 and I have been incredibly sad she couldn’t be with us on our wedding day in person. SHe was there in our hearts and thoughts tho. And whenever I look at our wedding pics and I see the pendant, it automatically takes me back to my granny.

this is a beautiful heirloom story, dolphin :). the pink gold ring is sooo pretty {i adore pink/rose gold} and the stacked rings strike a perfect balance with your e-ring. as for me, i have a locket with our family photo that i am hoping to wear on our wedding day :).

@ERL501: Good luck to US! J/K. It should be a good game! I’ll be at a Wedding so we are planning to watch it Sunday. We will just have to stay away from social media/tv/radio/friends till we can watch it!

That is so sweet! And I love the way Mr. Dolphin’s mom tells it. I wore my engagement ring on one hand of course and on the other hand an aquamarine (my birthstone and something blue) ring from my mom’s family, and my grandma’s (dad’s mom) gold wedding band. Wearing the two old rings that represented both sides of my family was really special to me since all of my grandparents have passed away.
