Preparing for the Aftermath

September 30th, 2010 @ 6:11 pm by Mrs. Socks

Pretty much the entire time we’ve been planning this wedding, I’ve asked myself, “what on earth will I do after the wedding??” It’s been a serious concern of mine that a lot of other people laugh at and dismiss when I wonder out loud what exactly I will do.

I love blogging, and I love having projects to plan and a goal in mind and staying busy with a “mission” after work. I’ve been terrified that Mr. Socks might have to put his new wife in some sort of withdrawal program after I don’t have the wedding to plan anymore.

“Doc, I just want it back…I want all of the stress of planning a wedding back! I don’t know what to do with myself without projects and endless emails to vendors!”

And then…a few weeks ago, I noticed a change. I could suddenly see life AFTER the wedding. I could finally start picturing the honeymoon, which seemed so ridiculous to think about before since the wedding was too huge to think around.

I think the biggest thing that happened was that I could start to imagine the things we could put our money toward after the wedding. We could take that weekend trip to the Poconos that we had wanted to do! We could travel around the rest of the Northeast and see states that I’ve never been to!

And then…I could see the car we’ve been promising to purchase for me after the wedding.

Ooh, Acura TSX…you are everything I’ve ever wanted in a vehicle!

And I could see our money going toward better landscaping next spring, and maybe even redoing our master bathroom.

Let me tell you…thinking of all of the fun things we can do after the wedding has me excited now. The wedding has been a great practice for me to really save money and put it toward a large goal. Without as large of a goal to save for (besides retirement and future kids and emergencies and blah blah blah) we can finally put our money toward the fun things we haven’t been able to work on/purchase this past year!

So now, I have quite the list going of things to do AFTER the wedding, including everything we wish to accomplish, places we want to go, and yes, treats that we can buy for ourselves (while still being responsible about our money, of course). I’m not so afraid of after the wedding anymore…it doesn’t seem like the big black hole of boredom that I expected it to be all these months. I think we’ll definitely revel in the fact that a lot of stress has been lifted from our shoulders and that we’ll feel freer to splurge on things that aren’t wedding-related!

Did you/do you dread the end of wedding planning, too? Do you have a list of “After the Wedding” to do’s? What do you want to do after the wedding?

Our big goal after the wedding is a house! I’m glad that we have that to look forward to, because I might go a little crazy with all the extra money if we didn’t have another big goal ;)

I am going to miss planning so much! And, the wedding is such a great excuse to buy stuff on Etsy too, so I’m sure I’ll go into Etsy withdrawl.

I’m still 9 months away from the wedding, so I’m going to savour it!

We’re gonna spend some of our time/money working on our cars! He has a ‘68 Cougar that we’re gonna restore together, and I have a ‘03 Eclipse that I want to put a bodykit on and have custom painted. Also gonna try and work on our backyard as well.

Shortly after the wedding we stepped into the house search&buy project — and lemme tell you, tis perfect to spend every single waking hour on, and it’s definitely taken over the place of wedding prep in my days lol!

I totally understand, planning this wedding has given me something to do allday everyday. And after the big day, I’m like will I be bored all the time or just wasting my days, lol. But after some thought, there are a few projects around the house we would like to complete and some trips we would like to take before we start TTC.

Miss Socks, I have JUST arrived at this point, too! I’m an October bride as well, month twin. :) A few weeks ago it really started to dawn on me that the process would be over soon and I started to feel a little uncomfortable but I didn’t have time to think about it. Recently I just started realizing that on the other side of this massive, life-changing event is the REST OF OUR LIVES. I can’t express how excited I am to be married to my soon-to-be husband and finally get to start living the life we’ve talked about for so long. I’m ready to work on our house, make more dinners together at home, and to enjoy our first holiday season as a married couple. It was like it just dawned on me that all of this work is building up to the entire reason we got engaged in the first place: to spend our lives together. It was a great epiphany!

This is so funny! My FI has asked me this question so many times! I think he’s genuinely concerned about me!

Honestly, though, we’re going to be moving 2 months after the wedding, and FI might have to move sooner. Our lease is up in 2 months after the wedding, but FI will be getting his masters the month before, and if he gets a job before the wedding that is too far to commute, he’ll be moving right away and then I’ll follow after I finish up school/wedding stuff. So I feel like that will be my “project” that I’ll have to deal with, and I’m ok with that.

Oh, after the wedding is awesome! I got back in my kayak and paddled for the first time in months, hung out with friends I missed, stayed on the couch not making anything, and enjoyed being a newlywed. It’s fun. Don’t stress!

You are going to love post-wedding life! I was worried that I’d be so bored, but after our college graduations and cross-country move, I found so many new projects! Like finding a job and decorating our new place! Plus, the wedding stuff lingers on for months after it’s all over. We’re still picking photos for our album, etc. And every time I write a Weddingbee recap, I feel like I’m reliving it all over again! Great post!

Great post! As an Oct bride, too (one week!), I have started to think what “normal life” will be like after wedding and honeymoon. It’s been so long, I hardly know what normal life is anymore, but the exciting thing is that you get to define what your new life will be like! I hope some of the inspiration and insights I have gleaned over the last nine months of planning will come with me as I begin married life.
