A Gamer’s Piece of Cake

September 30th, 2010 @ 4:57 pm by Mrs. Elephant

Well, we can’t leave all the cool cake inspiration to just the “bride’s” cake!

Down South, it’s pretty much tradition to have a groom’s cake, often shaped as an interest of the groom’s. From sports teams to colleges to hobbies, groom’s cakes can be a fun way to spotlight the groom.

Here are a couple of the awesome groom’s cakes my friends have showcased at their weddings:

I’m told this has something to do with the game WoW.

It didn’t take too long to figure out what our inspiration for Mr. E’s cake would be. Mr. E is a gamer. Not just your average one-system gamer…we have a Wii, Playstation 3, XBox 360, and two Nintendo DS’s in our household. Yeah, I would say we have almost all gaming options covered.

We decided on the XBox 360 since that is Mr. E’s favorite and appears to be something very easy to shape out of a cake. It wasn’t too hard to find some awesome inspiration pictures online; now we just have to find a baker that can bring it to life.

Will you have a groom’s cake at your wedding? If so what will it look like?

Ooh I’ve never heard of a Grooms Cake - but I bet Mr. Jaguar would go for his favourite football (rugby!) team!

When does the groom traditionally cut the cake?

My friend married a former Yell Leader this summer and he had a Kyle Field grooms cake! It was amazing. My fiance, however, will be going with the more subdued logo or seal.

I LOVE the Texas cake! The chocolate makes my mouth water… Delish!

We are! FI wears a hat with his family’s auto shop logo on it. Seriously, I can count on my right hand the number of days I haveN’T seen him wear it!

So thats the cake we are getting made =)

We’re having a grooms cake also. FI picked out a 2 tier chocolate cake with choc dipped strawberries but I really want to have a 3d cake made of his motorcycle.

My husband’s groom’s cake was his college logo, but that Xbox cake is awesome.

I love grooms cakes! We are having a blue igloo cooler that is open with beer cans and rock candy “ice” inside. Oh and the outside of the cooler will have his fav team logo on it.

@Mrs. Jag: the grooms cake is cut by the groom after the whole “feeding of the cake” action

@Miss Jaguar: The groom’s cake is normally cut right after the bride’s cake. Mr. E and I both love strawberries, so we’ll probably have to steal some of those during the cake cutting before they’re gone.

I kinda love that TX-shaped cake. It would go fabulously with my TX-shaped plate.

We had a groom’s cake. It was a surprise for my husband. It was in the shape of a coffee mug and had a Hungarian Quote on it about coffee. He loves coffee.

It’s in the gallery if anyone wants to see it!

Yes my fiance’s cake is probably going to be an classic mustang or camaro pulling a shallow water boat w/miniature versions of our fishing rods…but that’s a concept right now. It might be too much.

Groom’s cakes aren’t a big tradition here, but I have an awesome idea for one! My guy and his friends are huge Devo fans. My cousin will be making a cake shaped like a red Devo energy dome aka the silly tiered hats that they wear. I will be making/decorating the cake stand to look like an album cover.

hubs is rally into hiking so i got a hiking cake made. on the top, they made little figures of us sitting on a log next to a tent with trees, flowers, hiking trail etc. it was AWESOME! hubs knee i was getting one but didn’t know anything about design.

we served it at our friday night cocktail party since we thought we’d already have so much food at the wedding (dessert + wedding cake + mini doughnuts)

We’re having “groom’s pie.” My FI doesn’t like cake that much (although I DO, and there was no way I was doing without cake at my wedding!), but he loves pie. So we’re going to have a normal wedding cake (all in chocolate, hallelujah), plus 2 pies: blueberry lattice tart and strawberry rhubarb.

miss elephant, i just wanted to say as a displaced texan (living in minnesota) i giggled in sheer happiness upon seeing all the pictures of the above cakes, first with the texas-shaped cake, and especially of all the aggie things. i’m a baylor bear, but have lots of friends who went there, and appreciate the loyalty to the college. good luck finding someone to make the cake!

We will be having a cake made like Neyland Stadium- the UT Vols stadium! My man loves football and is so excited to see his cake come to life in a few months!

Our groom’s cake was a complete surprise for my guy. He’s a HUGE Star Wars fanatic, so the obvious choice (well, obvious to me!) was a replica of Boba Fett’s helmet, one of his favorite characters. Our baker gave us some interesting looks at that meeting, but she pulled it off wonderfully! :)
