About Ms. Sloth

Somebody Please Stop Me

September 30th, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Ms. Sloth

I was really stoked when I found a dress for under $150. I know that I still haven’t decided that I’ll definitely wear it, but if I do, even with the significant alterations I’d like, it’ll still cost maybe $350, tops.

Since I’d originally budgeted about a grand for a dress, I’ll have some moolah left over. The smart thing to do would be to put it toward something else. There are always plenty of unexpected expenses that pop up during wedding planning, right?

Right?

But then a little devil wormed its way into my brain. And this devil is whispering to me “Buy some crazy-ass expensive shoes!”

And I really, really want to. I want a pair of Manolos.

I’m not a brand snob by nature. So it’s not about the label or about how these shoes would look in that ubiquitous bridal-shoe shot that all wedding photographers do. And it has nothing to do with Carrie Bradshaw. But their jeweled d’orsay pumps are just so, so, so, sooooooo pretty.

These two are in our wedding colors and are just gorgeous:

Somebody Please Stop Me : wedding philadelphia shoes Purple purple

But these are more versatile, and I could wear them with anything after the wedding:

(All photos from NeimanMarcus)

If I did go the Manolos route, I’d probably get the gold. I’ve been dying to have bright, funky shoes under my dress, but if I’m spending $700+ on a pair of shoes, I will make myself wear them to every dressy event I attend for the rest of my life. So gold would be best. And I loooooooooove them. Love.

But I don’t think I can do it. Seven hundred fifteen dollars could also cover things like all of our flowers, food for eight extra guests, most of our booze, etc. And I’m good at finding looks for less, so I’m hoping that I can find a pretty pair of embellished d’orsay pumps that fall within budget. But I think I’m going to dream about these shoes.

Were you tempted by any splurges when it came to your wedding-day garb? Did you go for it or save your money?

I totally get it, I’m a huge fan of those shoes in every color, but $700 is a lot to part with. But I do think if they are a pair that you can count on wearing at least 6 more times in your life, you have essentially balanced out the cost. I say get them:-)

I’m probably not the right person to ask since I got the same bug in my brain and ended up splurging on Christian Louboutin’s for my wedding ;)

I say… but the shoes. It doesn’t always have to be about practical and everytime you wear these beauties… you will remember your special day!

Do it. You were so good and shopped around for your dress…you deserve to reward yourself with some damn gorgeous shoes.

I’m sure you can find some similar shoes that would be a lot cheaper. It’s incredible that you were able to get such a great deal on your dress. You’ve got time, so why not make a game out of trying to find some similarly amazing shoes at an impressively low price?

Yes, a wedding is a “once in a lifetime” event, but $750 is a LOT of money….

Buy them, and wear them with scuffed up jeans and a great top with chunky jewelry. Very indie, very awesome. Then you can expand their wearability (and i’d get hot pink - i’d wear that way more than gold, personally :-) )

Posting them here is definitely a bad idea if you’re trying to talk yourself out of them.. The hive has a way to help you justify almost any purchase!!

Make sure you keep taxes in mind! They will push the total cost of the shoes surely over $800!

Im a stickler when it comes to money…and i had those exact same shoes for my wedding orignally…only they were $10.00!!! :) ( I ended up splurging on a coloured pair for 99.00!!). Your paying for the name so i would say…dont do it!! :( My OPEN BAR was 800.00, you could have covered that!

I was so tempted to buy expensive shoes and even checked out some Kate Spades for around $400. I’m so glad I never actually purchased them. I’m happy with my eBay find for $100, J Crew Pave Crystal shoes. At the end of the day, I spent what I would have spent on those expensive shoes, on an extra hour of photography at our wedding. And I’m so happy I did!

My fiance told to me to “spend whatever you want” on a dress (he’s paying for most of the wedding) But I ended up getting one on sale (that I do LOVE) at Davids Bridal. When it came down to it, yes this is a once-in-a-lifetime party I’ve been planning since I was 12, but still it is one day in our lives together. I’d rather have that extra money to replace the counter tops in our new house, or use it towards something all our guests will enjoy like upgrading the hors d’oeuvres or the alcohol. So while there’s nothing wrong with splurging on something you want, in the end it’s all about how the purchase will sit with you and your SO. For me, I was more satisfied by the savings than I would have been by the splurge (and trust me… everyone was shocked because I have been known to be a splurge-er)

Dear Miss Sloth
Your dress is perfect and this style of Manolo is great. However, in my opinion, I dont think they go together. There are some stellar jaw dropping designer heels out there that would totally complete your look that may blow your mind price tag wise. All I am saying is dont get stuck on this certain style of Manolo and shop around a bit. I bet you find another that compliments the dress perfectly and comes in well below your $1000 budget.

I love them and you totally DESERVE them…but I really think you can find an equally beautiful pair for a lot less. As you know, it’s all about where your priorities are when budgeting for your wedding. Mine isn’t on shoes but hey everyone is different! If I were making the decision though, I’d say keep shopping for a while and if you still can’t get them out of your mind…go for it. :)

Totally saved the money. Every time I thought about spending crazy amounts like that I would equate it to something else I wanted for the wedding like a DJ.

I have those shoes in pewter. I bought them off Ebay, so I only paid $200 (they were gently used) but OHMYFREAKINGGOODNESS, they are the most beautiful, comfortable evening shoes I own. I easily lasted all of FSIL’s wedding and reception in them. And I strutted. Because they are so gorgeous. Just be warned - it’s hard to go back once you take the plunge into designer shoe land. The comfort and quality is just off the charts in comparison to other shoes.

I would just hold off until a few months before the big day. If no surprise expenses have come up by then, then go ahead and splurge :) But for me, personally, my cap price for shoes was $400 TOPS, and I only spent $90 on an awesome pair of Nine West’s. My dress was also crazy cheap, and we put the extra money right into our savings account, and bought a really nice piece of furniture after the wedding :)
