I haven’t written the post where I complain about one whole side of my family being absent from our wedding—mostly because I believe the less energy I give it, the easier I can get over it.
However, I did see a handful of those family members at my brother’s recent wedding and I’m so happy that we did get some celebratory face-time. I love them…and I tried my best to put on my I-ain’t-mad-at’cha face. We haven’t been super close, but I appreciate the times when we do see each other.
Almost immediately after entering the rehearsal dinner, my dad’s cousin stood and said that she’d like to say something. She instantly became emotional and I could just feel my repressed tears inching their way to the corners of my eyes. She produced 2 rolled-up and ribboned papers and said one was for my brother’s bride and one was for me. Me?! This wasn’t about me! If she had wanted to do me, she should have waited another month for MY rehearsal dinner!
But I kindly took the roll and untied the purple bow.

I am not photogenic. I used to be, but I haven’t been in quite a few years. So the idea of getting engagement photos is kind of terrifying to me. And for Mr. S, it’s even worse. He literally hates getting in front of a camera and can’t even smile. So it seems logical to skip an engagement-photo session.
BUT. I’d really like it if we could get some cute pics of ourselves. To this day, there really exists only one photo of us that isn’t terrible (well, not counting some very cute but very drunken photobooth pics). And that photo is totally outdated. My hair is much shorter now and his is a bit longer. We don’t look like that anymore.
We have wonderful photographers booked for our wedding, and I have total faith in their abilities, but I’m still really afraid that our photos would come out terribly awkward. I just don’t think that we’d ever look as relaxed and cute as these couples:

The detail Mr. Starfish is the most excited about for our wedding day is his outfit for the day. Every time he puts it on, he declares it’s so much better than a tux. It’s no Hawaiian shirt, but he’s still really happy about it.
When Mr. Starfish first decided to go with navy blazers and khakis, we both knew it could get pricey, but we wanted to make sure it would not cost the groomsmen more than a tux rental. So, I did quite a bit of research. I found Men’s Wearhouse often has sales like buy one get one half off, or buy one get one free. At one point, I even saw a navy blazer on clearance, so we went to our local MW to look for the suits.

Simple Candle Centerpieces by thefuturemrsherdt
I had so many ideas of what to give my bridesmaids as a thank you for being there for me on the big day. Then I had a thought: Maybe the greatest gift of all wouldn’t necessarily be the most unique, most beautiful, most thoughtful gift. Maybe the greatest gift would be not having to spend so much money. Being a bridesmaid is expensive! Not to mention the fact that ALL SIX of my bridesmaids are still in school. I hinted about this thought to Sister Lioness and Bmaid Emily, both of whom agreed that they would rather have me cover some of their expenses, even if it meant missing out on this:

Who’s ready for some Turtle wedding recaps?? Well…ready or not, here they come!

Rewind back to July 9, 2010: I was an absolute nervous wreck and had been feeling this way for some time. For the last couple of weeks, if anyone brought up a wedding-related concern to me, or even looked at me the wrong way, I would burst into tears and cry, “I hate the wedding!!”

So the big question when it comes to our engagement pictures is…What the heck do we wear?!?
Our photographers recommended staying away from solid black and solid white and suggested that I wear a dress for at least one of the outfit changes. I’ve also read that solid colors work better than patterns, and materials with texture translate well into print. Other than that, the options are endless. I’m thinking that we will do two outfit changes—one that’s more casual (as in jeans and tops), and one that’s a little dressier. I’d be willing to bet King Hippo goes with jeans for both, which is fine, but I’ll make a dress one of my outfits.
I started my clothing search online and went to my go-to online retailer, Victoria’s Secret.

Heh heh heh hahahaha. That is the sound of my nervous laughter because our wedding is FIFTEEN DAYS AWAY. I mean, what? How did this happen? I have been feeling more than a little unglued in the past week or so, and I truly did not expect that I would. All that is really a post for another day, but the long and short of it is that your eight-legged friend here is pretty frazzled, and I’m going to do my very best to keep posting in the next fifteen days, but, you know. I’m taking it one day at a time.
Anyway, here is a light and fun subject we can discuss: FOOD! When Mom Octopus and I made our final planning trip to Pittsburgh in July, we had a tasting of several of the things that will be on our dinner menu, and it was seriously uh-may-zing.
During cocktail hour, we’re having a cheese table and a fruit & vegetable table. Mom Octo and I got to try some of the offerings from the cheese table. Now, listen. Cheese is my all-time favorite food, and I have great love for a well-assembled cheese plate. Big Burrito’s cheese plate was AWESOME.

Cuz…that’s about our dance skill set! I’ll let you know how our friendor dance lessons go a little later, but for now, lets talk music.
(from Weddingchicks. This has nothing to do with dance songs except how super awesome our first dance will be!)
Our original no-brainer choice for our first dance song was Luckiest by Ben Folds. It was sort of “our song” for a few years, when we would pine for each other over the distance of a 4-hour drive between different colleges. It’s a gorgeous song, a tear-jerker, and it really speaks to how meant-for-each other we feel.

Well, hey there hive! I can’t even begin to express how excited I am to be the newest bee!!
The morning I got my acceptance email from Mrs. Penguin was just another Saturday in the Meerkat house. I was in the bathroom getting ready so I could go run some errands when Mr. Meerkat saw the email pop up on my computer. Being the sneak he is, he stole a peek. When he saw that I had been accepted, he came into the bathroom with this HUGE grin on his face and told me he had some good news. He teased for a couple minutes, asking what it was worth to me. I just laughed. Finally he ‘fessed up and told me I had been accepted. I did a full body, legs wrapped around Mr. Meerkat’s waist, jump into his arms. I was screaming and yelling the whole time, “OMG ARE YOU SURE???” Alright, so maybe it wasn’t really a typical day, but it sure was nice. *grin*
I chose Miss Meerkat because from the moment I saw that cute little icon he reminded me of our overly spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo.

(Yes, Wicket really does stand just like a meerkat when he’s begging for food.)
So who are the Meerkats, you ask?

Before I dipped my toes into the DIY-wedding-invitation wave pool, I offered to make Sissy’s bridal-shower invites. I made my sissy-in-law via my brother, Spiffy’s, bachelorette-party invites last year, and when I can find a sample I promise I’ll show you. Needless to say, after Spiffy’s I knew to buy the envelope first and make the invites from there. What? You mean the post office can’t just send out any old thing you make up? No sireebob. My already late-going-out invites started getting returned to me after only two days out in the big bad world. AFTER I had to hand make friggin’ envelopes. Lesson learned. Over. I ran to the post office to grab extra stamps. Only half came back, though, so now I was, and still am, inundated with friggin’ 10-cent stamps. If I have a bill I don’t want to pay, I slap five of those suckers on the envelope just to stick it to the man. I’m looking at you, $2000 ear-infection bills!
Oh yeah, back to Sissy’s invites. Sara and I had an epic adventure “just down the road” to Dedham (aka not 10 minutes from Providence) and found Paper Source. Swoon! Our epic adventure ended with my purchase of two stamps; not 10-cent stamps, but the kind with ink pads and, dare I say it, embossing powder. I bought the cute STD one, which will never get used, and a beautiful ring one. Once I offered myself up to Sissy’s invites, I decided to use the cute stamp. I stole, I mean borrowed, some ideas from Paper Source and came up with the following samples.

While a lot of big decisions are still pending, we’re making a lot of headway on the small stuff: things like whether to have a DJ or band, a buffet or seated dinner, and how we want our ceremony site to look. We stumbled across a video of a wedding at our venue (Oxon Hill Manor), and we weren’t impressed at all with the way the ceremony looked. I can’t share the video because that would be way too rude, but just to give you an idea…
They had an aisle runner and it was plain white. Everyone from the flower girl to the bride (it seemed) tripped walking down it. Not only that, there were no rose petals, extra flowers, candles, pedestals, or anything to make the space shine! Granted, the gardens at Oxon Hill Manor are gorgeous all on their own, but a little something can go a long way. Also, the aisle was hardly centered. The runner kept moving each time someone walked down it. Ahhh!!
Watching this video brought up a lot of good points for my man and me to discuss. Do we want an aisle runner? Definitely not! What we do want are loads and loads of rose petals. We want…well, it’s easier to show you than tell you. I found this picture on the Internet during our conversation, and we agreed—it’s perfect!
