Many a summer ago, I took a cake decorating class at a local community college. It sparked an interest in me, unseen since my discovery of Haribo gummies. Since that first class, I’ve spent time teaching myself cake decorating (mostly through a lot of trial and error), as well as gleaning tips from books and the endless supply of cake decorating shows now on TV.
My homeboy, Mr. Pin Cushion, is my sous chef, as well as my voice of reason when a cake starts to (literally or figuratively) fall apart.
Together we have created some pretty interesting and crazy fondant-covered creations (like the 2+ foot wine bottle cake above).

Zeb and I decided early on that we would enjoy city-landscape pictures. I really enjoy the elegance of wedding pictures juxtaposed with city grit. Lush greens and beautiful gardens would not yet be in bloom during our (wicked) early spring wedding. Two of the more common picture locations in the area are at the Statehouse and Roger Williams Park. Both are gorgeous in their own right, but I wanted something different, dammit!
In comes our crazy idea. We are going to walk from our church to the Biltmore. It’s not a long distance—five or six blocks, really—and we’ll scope out photographic opportunities along the way. It was a romantic idea, but we had no idea if it was actually feasible. Are there any good spots to take pictures? All that was solved this past weekend when we decided to go to Providence on a particularly boring Sunday (read: prooooocrrrrrrasssstinaaaaationnn!) and do a trial walk. We were very excited with what we saw. Well, I was excited; Zeb just thinks it’s “cool.” The following are some of the “cool” spots Zeb got to see.

I love a good theme party. After all, my first date with Mr. Lion was to a theme party! I wanted our wedding to have a theme…one that suited our setting, like Miss Starfish. I wanted our theme to suit our style, like Mrs. Cowboy Boot. I wanted to do something classy and understated; although, let’s face it…even the over-the-top themes are still pretty awesome:
Our ceremony and reception will be held in the same venue; the ceremony will be outdoors in the garden and the reception inside in the ballroom. So, we knew we needed a little garden inspiration.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it again—this long engagement has allowed for many changes to be made.
I know that I have not shared our invites yet, but we are still making a couple of changes to them. Trust me—you’ll be the first to know when they are done! How about I make you a deal? I’ll share one piece with you today to hold you over until the big reveal. Deal? Great!
We decided to do RSVP postcards to save some money and ordered them from Vistaprint. Well, after getting our engagement pictures back, I found an excuse to order new RSVP cards!
Here are the previous RSVP postcards…

Nice, but a little boring

This wedding of ours is nearing closer and closer, and there are still some major tasks left on my list. Like writing my vows.

(source)
I know, kind of major.
When I was younger, I always wanted to write for a newspaper. Not because I had any real desire to be a newspaper reporter, but because it seemed the only thing that would force me to write was a deadline. School papers were usually finished in the early morning hours of their due date. Toasts have been scribbled on a rehearsal dinner napkin. I suppose I just do better under pressure.
But procrastination has become a problem with my vows.

With family portraits wrapped up, Mr. FF and I made our way through the corridors of our hotel to the grand ballroom. You know, for a little get-together. A small fête. FOR OUR FREAKING RECEPTION!

Our escort card table centerpiece let guests know they were in for a sweet reception!
::ahem:: I’m pulling myself together now, I promise—I just still get excited every time I think about it! I had planned for months for our reception décor to look cohesive, pretty, and well…pink. And letmetellyou, when I walked into that ballroom, it literally took my breath away.
Once again, I got excited about something way too early and made a purchase about eight to ten months ahead of time. But whatevs. This wasn’t expensive, and they are so cute.
I ordered these festive paper banners from Etsy. Look how fun and awesome they are!

It took me forever to figure out what I wanted to do for our save the dates. Starting was difficult. When I thought I’d decided, I would change my mind, and then change my mind again. I would start a project or get a really good idea, get discouraged, and be back at square one.
Know what saved me? Weddingbee. Mrs. Sunrise, in particular, shared her fabulous DIY save-the-date magnets and envelopes, and I was inspired! I literally ran home to re-start ours and get them done. Once and for all.
It didn’t go as smoothly as I would have hoped. I hit quite a few roadblocks. The first being finding a program that would allow me to add text to our pictures. Again, know what saved me? Yup, Weddingbee. I started a thread on the boards—literally desperate—asking for advice on design programs (that didn’t involve knowing Photoshop or having a Mac). Someone told me about Picnik, and I am forever indebted. Wow! What an awesome website. I can’t say enough good things about it. It was exactly what I needed. My saving grace.
Once I got our picture squared away, it was time to submit it for the magnet. I ordered about 25 just to test them, and guess what? They were hideous. Seriously, we looked like Martians. We were orange. I guess I got a little too carried away on Picnik and enhanced the colors too much. I also added a border (which Overnight Prints strongly recommends you do not do), and I thought, “Geez. Can we please catch a break!?” It felt like we were never going to get them done.

Let’s kick things off with the Ostrich engagement story, shall we?
Mr. O has always been the master of surprises. And when you’ve been together for almost ten years (yep, a decade!), that’s an impressive feat.
So as I turned 30 during this very special year, I figured this birthday would have some epic firework-display surprises in store for me. A luxe tropical getaway? A mouthwatering wine-country meal with lots of truffles? Or that gorgeous 17″ Macbook Pro in my dreams?

Before we got married, I spent a long time thinking that when people said your wedding was “the best day of your life,” they were cheapening other things and exaggerating and trying to force the “my one day as a princess” mindset on me. But really, really, the days immediately before and after our wedding day were possibly, and probably, the best days of my life. The people who came made it magical, and my wife continues to help us both hold onto that magic.

Sorry for my absence this last week, hive!! I missed you and felt guilty for leaving you, believe me.
I’m waiting on many of our photos from our photographer from our civil ceremony, but I do have a few teasers to share!
First, I just want to share the two tiny little things that didn’t go quite right before the ceremony.
Originally, I didn’t want to see Mr. Socks until I walked down the aisle on our civil ceremony day since we were doing a first look on our big wedding day and I thought it would be fun to do it the old fashioned way for our civil ceremony! Well, that didn’t work out. I went to Philly to get my hair and makeup done, and on my way home, Mr. Socks called to tell me he hadn’t left the house yet, and it would just be easier for us to go to my parents’ house together so my Dad wouldn’t have to come pick me up.
Okay…I wasn’t thrilled with the idea, but he was right and it was fine. He saw me with my hair and makeup done, and it wasn’t the end of the world.
Problem #2 occurred when I got to my parents’ house and we realized that I forgot the gorgeous calla lily bouquet I had spent an hour slaving over at home. 45 minutes away. And we had 45 minutes until the ceremony. It wouldn’t have worked to go there and back.
I wasn’t going to cry over it, but I did freak a bit and wondered if I’d look stupid without something in my hands.
