The day started out just like this. The power in our house went out, and I had to finish last-minute alterations on costumes for opening night. I hauled ass over to my parents house at six in the morning to find it flooded. I remember thinking that this was the end of the world. It’s an odd thing to be thinking, in retrospect, on the day your boyfriend chooses to propose.

I am definitely not an expert when it comes to makeup application, but I think my skills are pretty decent. I guess my friends think I’m pretty decent too ’cause I have done makeup at five of my friends’ weddings, including spiffing up the bride and mother of the bride (which is a little stressful, I must say). I figure if my friends are confident enough in my makeup skills for their special day, then I should be too. And so I’ve decided to save some cash by not hiring a makeup artist for the wedding. I love the classic, “bride getting her makeup done” photos, but I suppose those will have to be sacrificed.
I have a thing for dresses. Whether it’s an everyday dress or one I need for a special occasion, they’re comfortable, girlie, and I adore them. I wasn’t a huge fan of BCBG before I met Mr. Brooch, but that’s because I never stepped foot into a BCBG store. One day, we were shopping for a dress for my little sister’s first communion, and Mr. Brooch dragged me in to a BCBG store. Whoa! Where had I been? The clouds parted and the sun shined bright!
I fell in love with everything in the store. Now I have to brace myself when I enter the mall or pass a BCBG because window shopping + BCBG = a bad combo.
While cruising the wedding blogs as I often do, I stumbled upon those four beloved letters: B C B G…Whoa! Again, the clouds parted. They make bridesmaid dresses? I was intrigued, so I hopped over to the BCBG website (gotta love the Internet), and clicked away. Below you’ll see a few of my favorite finds…

I know I’ve hinted about our favors before, though I honestly can’t remember when or find you the link where I cleverly hinted without giving anything away. Sorry. Now that we are two weeks away (ahh!), I opt to tell you about the favors rather than finish making them. If you’re coming to our wedding and want a pleasant surprise, stop reading now! If you can tear your eyes away from my amazing writing… which you can’t, of course, so continue on…
I decided early on that I did, in fact, want favors. It was a long debate since I have never been super excited about favors at weddings I’ve been to (with an exception or two), and I didn’t want to put a lot of effort into something that other people wouldn’t really care about. And is there really one thing that will satisfy everyone? Probably not, which led us to the solution: have favor options!

Yesterday, Hey Mister DJ Lee Dyson shared tips with Weddingbee on fostering an environment at your wedding that makes your guests want to dance all night long! Read the first post here, and check out DJ Lee’s additional tips below!

Additional tips for a successful dance floor
If the cocktail hour is located in a separate area from the reception/dinner area and is accessible for the entire night, make sure to have the venue move a 2nd satellite bar into the actual reception area so you don’t keep losing guests out of the dinner area. Even the best DJ can’t compete with open bar in a different room!
If this isn’t possible, then spend the money to have the DJ run an extra speaker to the separate cocktail area so people are still musically connected to the environment and can hear announcements when it’s time to pull them all back in for toasts, the first dance, etc.
The bride and groom can really set the tone for the evening!

Hi hive! The Barrettes are in PA and wedding things are underway! I had my first dress fitting with our seamstress and my worries about transforming mom’s dress in 6 weeks were quickly put to rest.
Haila is a wonderful Polish woman with a great eye for detail. She hadn’t seen the dress on me before today, so the only main work that was finished was the removal of sleeves and the lace from the neckline. That alone totally changed the look.
There’s just something about that oh-so perfect ballroom dip. It gets me every time.
Luckily, my mister willingly agreed, early on in our planning process (don’t forget, hive, we had a practically-infinite-and-good-Lord-will-it-ever-end 20-month engagement) to assist with what would end up being one of the last DIY(ish) “projects” we could fit in before the wedding.
I’m talking, of course, about private dance lessons, and the choreographed number that resulted, and would transition our guests from cocktail hour to dinner and dancing.
Our goal: Master moves we could polish and perform during the just-over-two-minute-long song we’d selected. We didn’t want to look overly stiff or obviously cheesy (subtly, sure), but also hoped to become familiar enough with the sequences that no amount of nerves, elation or tipsy guests could break our rhythm. So we signed up for 10 sessions, to be stretched over the eight weeks remaining before our wedding.
With a never-ending guest list and a venue that holds exactly 200, the Seashell crew had to come up with a way to accommodate all parties involved. We were scared to excessively over-invite for risk of filling our venue beyond capacity. We also were reluctant to invite too close to the 200 number and come in with a half-empty venue and many people we wished we’d have invited “if we’d only known.”
Simply put, the numbers game with acceptances and declines is just that: a numbers game.
Here’s how we made it work:
We divided the guest list 50/50. This meant each side got to invite 115 people (we left a little room for declines). This was our “A List”. Invitations were sent on June 25, 2010 with a response card date of July 25, 2010.
People who didn’t fit on the “A List” were placed on the “B List.”

Yay! I can’t believe I’m here! These past few weeks have just been crazy…but wonderful! Mr. Lion and I both graduated from law school and grad school, respectively, in May. After seven years of school, we’re just now starting our grown-up jobs. I work in a large hospital’s trauma unit, and I’m just starting to get the hang of it. This afternoon, I finished up with my last patient, headed down to my desk, and took a quick glance at my e-mail. MRS. PENGUIN?!? WHAAAAT!?! This was my face:

I recently saw these cute little Massachusetts cookies and all I could think of was how adorable they’d look in an out of town bag.

Part of our venue package includes the use of a suite for my bridal party to become even hotter, and another room for the guys to get ready in. I got the idea online to make some cute suite signs to hang from our respective rooms on the big day.
This was a very simple and quick DIY project. All it required was:
I love being able to use materials that I already have! I printed out the signs on white card stock (in the font used on our invitations) and then glued them to the green card stock. I glued the ribbon to the blue card stock and then attached the top two layers. I used a little super glue to add the crystals to the sign for a little extra sparkle and voilà! Simple and quick bridal suite signs.
Here are the fronts of the signs:
So today begins a big countdown. We are moving back to America in 30 days! It’s all very exciting, nerve-wracking, worrying, tantalizing, happy, sad, etc. We are totally excited to move to America (well, at least I am—I hope Mr. G is!) but very sad to be leaving the place we’ve called home for the past three years. We grew to be very comfortable here; this is where we make our living, where we set up our first place together…it’ll be sad to leave and exciting to go. Of course, we’re also very nervous about finding new jobs in America. A lot of my friends have had a hard time finding jobs after being let go or graduating from grad school—a lot of my very capable and hard-working friends! So it is rather worrying.
Enough about that, though. Since we’ve only got 30 days left, we are going to be doing some really kick-ass things. All the things we’ve been wanting to do in Tokyo. I mean, sounds kick ass, right? I’m going to chronicle those things here! I promise to keep up with the original reason I started blogging: to showcase my ex-pat adventures.
Mr. G and I have date nights once a month. This usually involves dinner and drinks—sometimes many, many drinks! Last night’s date night was deep-fried things—deep-fried things on sticks! All you can eat, to boot! I’ve always wanted to try kushiage, which is deep-frying skewered chicken at your table. We took it one step further and found a place where you can deep-fry tons of things on sticks. I’m talking cheese, bread, mushrooms, various types of meat, potatoes, vegetables…it was a buffet, and it was delicious. Enough talking—here are some pictures!
