I find any excuse I can to craft something and am completely infatuated with the 1950’s, all things Kennedy, and my furbaby Vida.
Hello! Once upon a time I was a wedding blogger called Mrs. Lemonade. I told the story of a lovely April afternoon that occurred not-so long ago. If you’ll kindly indulge me I’d like to finish telling my tale…
Ah, the first dance. This little wedding rite of passage gave me a decent amount of anxiety leading up to W day. The mister and I chose not to take any sort of dance lessons and not once did we practice our middle school sway. What can I say, we’re naturals.
Mrs. Zebra, Providence, RIAge and Occupation: 24 Marketing/Costume DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 26 Management/Firefighter Engagement Date: December 12, 2008Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: The Providence BiltmoreAbout Me: I'm a small town New England girl with an affinity for procrastination, crossing the proverbial line, and putting her foot in her mouth. I'm a lover of history, all seasons, sewing and Incubus. I design costumes on the side for my old high school's theatre department, which is where I met my sexy man. Our motto for our Big Fat Lebanese/Portuguese/Irish near-300 person wedding is "the more the merrier"! We are marrying in a Catholic ceremony and are hammering out the details of our Victorian-inspired reception.
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VAAge and Occupation: 25, Writer/EditorFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk ManagerEngagement Date: October 3, 2009Wedding Date: April 2011Venue: Oxon Hill ManorAbout Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
I am really anxious to get to a florist. I don’t know why, but I can’t stop obsessing about flowers! I can’t stop thinking about what kind of flowers we should have. I walked into the grocery store Monday night and stopped right by the bouquets of flowers. I started taking pictures with my camera, and ever since then, I haven’t been able to get my brain off of flowers!
I just can’t wait to sit down with a florist and say, let’s try some hydrangeas with some roses! Or do you have anything that’s green or pale pink? What flowers are in season during the spring? It’s a good thing I don’t know any florists because I would probably be stalking them asking a thousand questions at this point!
I am clearly going to have to schedule an appointment with one soon. Of course, I have to get my girls on board for this. I know I’m going to need a few second opinions! Even if we don’t pick the flowers or the bouquets that we’ll have for the wedding, I think looking at flowers will really help us envision the day.
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NYAge and Occupation: 25, Research TechnicianFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the LawEngagement Date: June 15, 2009Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: Heron Hill WineryAbout Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).
A few posts ago I shared with you my new-found love for paper garlands and hinted that I may be tempting my fate at them. Well, this past weekend Mr. L and I worked together and within a few hours of time we created our own heart garland. I started the project off by using my Hotmarks tool (boy, this thing is handy!) to burn-cut hearts out of an old romance novel (donated by Momma L).
Ms Seahorse, BostonAge and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-tradesFiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something betterEngagement Date: October 17, 2009Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: Fort Pond LodgeAbout Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
First, I could not find the keys anywhere for a pet sitting job, so 2 hours went to searching for them. Yup, two hours, just searching for keys. Did I mention that this is not my week? Also, my check engine light came on. See, again: not my week.
But right now—right now, folks, I am sitting on the couch while my lovely fiancee flits around setting things up for the big event: trying on wedding dresses.
“What?” you say. “Didn’t you already do this?” you wonder. Oh, silly you, just because we already bought one dress (each) doesn’t exclude the option of buying another. Or four others, if you are Fancee.
We got our dresses all altered up and Fancee does not like her dress. If she can’t find something else then she’s stuck with it, and that’s the deal we’ve worked out. In the meantime, some giant J.Crew boxes showed up at our house today, and Fancee washed her hands and feet so that she didn’t dirty the dresses. Once her appendages had been thoroughly cleaned, we began the process: she with the opening and on-trying, and I with the bemused watching and faithful documenting.
Miss Handbag, Smyrna, DE/JamaicaAge and Occupation: 25, AdministrationFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, SalesEngagement Date: Christmas Night 2008Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: Rosehall Resort, Montego Bay, JamaicaAbout Me: I am a Type A, emotional Italian fireball, who on a weekly basis must be brought back to reality by my level headed, calm, cool and collected fiance. We are planning an intimate, all white with hints of black, vintage inspired wedding on the old sugar aqueducts of Jamaica, with 30 of our closest friends and family flying in to witness the occasion. We are not traditional by any means and will be doing things very differently. :)
Since we are having a destination wedding and we have friends all over the US, we (OK, who are we kidding here, I) thought it would be a good idea to create a brochure. I scoured the Internet for ideas on formatting and ran across VistaPrint. I use them for work related marketing and always get emails for free offers, so I thought I would try it out.
I was looking for something with our color scheme (black and white) but they all seemed so dull to me. So, I started looking at the tropical themes. Besides, our guests are using this as their vacation, so I might as well play up the Caribbean theme.
I played around with different fonts and colors and came up with this.
This is the outside of the brochure:

Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TXAge and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance ITEngagement Date: August 8, 2009Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc EventsAbout Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
King Hippo and I have been engaged for over a year, but it seems like just yesterday that he was down on both knees (yes, both) asking me to marry him. So without further ado, here’s the story of our engagement…
After more than two years of dating and a cross-country move to be together, I was anxious for King Hippo to pop the question. I had a feeling that it was coming soon because we had been in Chicago a few weeks earlier for Sister Hippo’s wedding, and King Hippo had spent some alone time with Mama Hippo. I was convinced that he had asked her permission, but he was giving no clues.
Two weeks later, we headed to the Bahamas for a much-needed vacation. We landed, got through the long line at customs, and waited for our bags—one small suitcase for King Hippo, one ginormous suitcase for me.
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CAAge and Occupation: 24, English teacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacherEngagement Date: September 2008Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyardAbout Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
We are back from our post-courthouse, pre-ceremony mini-moon to Thailand! We stayed two nights in Bangkok and one night on the island of Koh Samet.
We landed at Suva…Suvarna…whatever, Bangkok Airport late Tuesday night and immediately got on a bus to our hostel. We were tired but excited to see the city—unfortunately, a heavy storm made it hard to see!
We stayed for the first two nights in Bangkok at a hostel called Lub d. I stay at hostels all the time, and here is my trick for picking a good one: look at the reviews at hostelworld.com, hostelz.com, and tripadvisor. I know it seems like a lot of work, but seriously, look at ALL the reviews to find the best one. Compare, compare, compare. I’ve only ever had one bad experience using this technique (in Amsterdam), and we picked a real winner this time, too. Lub d is located in the Silom area, and we ponied up for a double private room—it was about $90 for two nights. The double room had a private shower, bathroom, queen bed, and TV with Western channels. Score! It had a nice design and was comfortable and rather large for Asia.

Mrs. Husky, DenverAge and Occupation: 26, Systems AdministratorFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid offEngagement Date: August 14, 2009Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: Rancho San CarlosAbout Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
I was born a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Even during the worst of times (which, let’s face it, have been plentiful), I’ve cheered, yelled and cursed at the TV during as many games as I have been able to watch. Mr. Husky, on the other hand, was raised in a state without a professional football team. So, the NFL never had a place in his Sunday plans, until I came along. Now look:
(personal photo)
That would be me and Mr. Husky in New Orleans, fully decked out in Dallas Cowboys jerseys, during a late-season game against the Saints last year. The best part about converting someone to the wonderful world of football? Read more…
Mrs. Sand Dollar, HoustonAge and Occupation: 24, Graphic DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical TechnicianEngagement Date: January 8, 2010Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: MacLean ParkAbout Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!
Our programs are done! One of the first things I wanted to take care of this past weekend was cutting and gluing the program fans. I started with some kraft paper that we cut in half, and then just printed out my program design on some cardstock I had laying around. It was gray, and while at first it sort of bugged me, I decided to just let it go. Our STDs were printed on cream, invites on white, so I figured, why not just throw another color in the mix? The only time you’d ever notice would be if they were all laid out next to each other. So, it’s whatevs.
Mrs. Elephant, Dallas, TXAge and Occupation: 27, Financial Operations AnalystFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, IT Student/Store ManagerEngagement Date: March 29, 2009Wedding Date: April 2011Venue: The Tribute Golf ClubAbout Me: I'm a Philly native creating roots deep in the heart of Texas. I might be a little obsessed capturing those Kodak moments of anything and everything (mainly on vacations). I've become more of a gamer thanks to Mr. Elephant, who I met online and can't wait to spend the rest of my life with. We are planning a wedding based on our favorite colors, blue and green, with a travel theme for 150 of our closest friends and family. Hopefully our long (2-year) engagement won't kill me!
When meeting with our planner to sign our contract, she asked a ton of questions to get a better idea of what we wanted in a wedding. Two questions that stuck out to me were: “If you had to rank the different aspects of your wedding, what would be the top three? And what would be the bottom three?” Without hesitation, I said that the most important thing was photography and the least important was flowers. (It did take me a little while, with help from Mr. E, to come up with the rest of the top three and bottom three.) I’ve already mentioned our amazing photographer, so let’s talk about the floral aspect.
I was never a huge flower person, which is funny because Mama Elephant LOVES to have fresh flowers and plants around her house. I always tried to get out of watering those things! When I started dating Mr. E and we reached one of our first special occasions (my birthday), I told him I didn’t want any flowers. Honestly, I think they can be pretty and smell great, but they always die so quickly and therefore seem like a waste of money to me. The only times that Mr. E has sent me flowers were for Valentine’s Day (each one that we’ve spent together), and I did feel special when they arrived at my office. Those stargazer lilies lasted a good couple of weeks! (Which I have no doubt had to do with the company that Mr. E ordered them from, since they come pre-bloom.)

Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
After we had listened to our readings and our officiant’s charge to us as a couple, it was time to say our vows!
Mr. Guinea Pig and I both wrote our own vows—we had shared iterations of them before the wedding to make sure they were similar in length and style, but the final vows were a surprise for the day of. We both wrote them on pieces of paper to read at the ceremony despite their short length, knowing that the nerves of the day would prevent (me at least) a recitation from memory.
Mr. GP’s vows were sweet, sentimental, and funny—just like him!
He made me laugh (left photo), and then he made me cry (happy tears, of course). On the right you can see me desperately trying not to burst into tears. As Mrs. French Fries said, this is my “I’m trying not to cry” face. Read more…
