Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

My mother told me that one of the items that made her feel the most “bridal” on her wedding day was a pair of white stockings with a delicate pattern up the back seam. This got me thinking about maybe wearing stockings myself under my wedding dress.

Lately stockings (and tights!) seem to be back “in”…especially in this cold weather NZ has been experiencing. And I’m not talking about nude pantyhose here *shudder*…I’m talking about lovely lacey numbers, colourful patterns, and so on. Some people love ’em, some people can’t stand the thought of ’em. As for myself, I’m gradually discovering that I love them. And I think that the right pair of stockings can add an extra jolt of special to a wedding day outfit.

Not convinced? Let’s have a look at some bridal stocking/tights inspiration.

Pretty in lace….

A twist on tights? Try little lace socks (I so almost bought these. Then I decided they didn’t go with my dress style *sad face* maybe I will just have to get them anyway though…)

”Okay Miss E, yes stockings can look great…but isn’t your wedding in summer?” 100 Points for you! Yes, it is. But I also happen to be someone who can wear a jacket in 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) and be comfortable. I find it very hard to get warm and stay warm, and NZ summer days can be reasonably unpredictable in their temperature range as well. I’m much more likely to get too cold and be glad for the stockings than get too hot to keep them on.

And also, you’re welcome Northern hemisphere winter and autumn brides! For those of you with a normal body thermostat, stockings could be the perfect addition to your look, so I hope that the pics above inspired you.

For my own stockings, I have finally settled on a pair of ivory lace-topped Swiss dot stay ups (say that ten times fast!) from Dollhouse Bettie (which, by the way, is an awesome site for all sorts of retro/pin-up/vintage lingerie, not just hosiery).

Now I’m tempted to get the flower girl a pair of pretty tights too…but I’m not sure if she would go for that or if I could find ones that go with her cream dress. Hmm.

So what do you think of stockings? Fad or fab? Are you wearing stockings or tights under your wedding dress?

I won’t be wearing stockings under my dress since it is thick satin and the temperature will probably be 95 degrees Fahrenheit. However, I am all about stockings/tights in the winter. I especially love swiss dot tights.

Hm, I hadn’t thought bout tights. I assumed I wouldn’t be, my wedding will be in the summer and I rarely wear tights unless I’m wearing bright/patterned opaque ones (which I LOVE).

It would depend on my shoes I think - if I go open toe, then definitely no tights.

Love that first picture!!!! =) But I think I’m wearing open toes so this wouldn’t work =( And I think dyed crinny, dyed shoes AND lace tights would….come off a little overkill. LOL

Love the full lace stockings for bridal. I agree that the first picture is the best!

Another benefit of tights - they can cut down on blisters from those never-worn bridal shoes!

Although I doubt I’ll be wearing them, because my wedding is in June and I get can get overheated in a Massachusetts January.

The lace ones are pretty! I also have trouble staying warm most of the time, but I still stayed far away from stockings on my wedding day. Things stayed quite warm underneath all that skirt.

I wore a pair of burgundy socks for my wedding. They made my shoes more comfortable than wearing them with bare feet, they ended mid-calf so they weren’t too hot, and they added a bit of color to my outfit. Totally loved them =)

OMG LOVE THEM!!! The first pic is definatly making me think about them!! The noly downside about our wedding is that it’s during mid summer and it will be hot thus the extra layer might be a bit much but if I can wear them, I will!

Thanks for the post!! :)

I promised my FH that seamed stockings are on the list (especially since our venue always has the air conditioning way up and I hate being cold). Right now I’m debating between a lovely pair from What Katie Did or keep looking. He wants white seam but I’d love to wear them again and am going towards a contrast seam in black or nude.

Oooh the lace ones at the top are so pretty! I’d never really thought of this since I got married in July, but they would be so lovely for a fall or wintery wedding!

Just be sure that the lace ones will stay up. A wedding is a long day and they may start to roll down.

I like black tights…Unfortunately, I think white tights will make my legs look like two sticks of butta….and not in the good way.

But I nevere wear tights with open toes. Ever.

Definitely not my style! I’ll be going with bare legs. I know I’d only spend the whole day pulling them up! Plus I’m so clumsy I’d ladder them!

I got married in July, and totally rocked some stockings despite of the heat. I stared at the first pic you posted for months - I so badly wanted those exact ones. But then I bought my over the top, lace wedding shoes, so decided that lace dress + lace shoes + lace stockings = total lace over kill. I bought some plain ivory stockings instead, and loved them!
