I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!
About Mrs. Lioness

Two-Shoe Bride

October 1st, 2010 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Lioness

You may recall that I had found the perfect wedding shoes for me. Whimsical, unique, and by one of my favorite designers. However, as our plans evolved, our theme evolved as well. Though both the ceremony and the reception would be whimsically vintage, they each started to take on a different tone. Our ceremony became more soft and romantic, while our reception became more bright and colorful. I thought this was appropriate; the design was still cohesive, but there was some separation to the events, too. Then I started thinking. Maybe my Kate Spade ballet flats were more reception shoes than wedding shoes.

And just like that, I was a two-shoe bride.

I’m so embarrassed to admit that! I’m usually pretty far from indecisive. I usually know what I want and I rarely change my mind once it’s made up. But I suppose that’s one disadvantage of having a long engagement; you have plenty of time to second-guess yourself and every trivial decision you make. So, I rearranged our budget (again) and started shopping around for ceremony shoes. I knew they couldn’t be too high because 1) Mr. Lion isn’t exactly an NBA star and 2) wearing ballet flats for the reception now dictated the length my dress would need to be altered to.

How fun is that font?! It reminds me of Juno. Anyway. I found these lovely ivory heels, the Culver by Nina:

They were exactly the look I was going to, and they weren’t too tall (2.5 inches). The only problem was that I love the trend of colorful wedding shoes. I needed my shoes to have a little more personality! But could I pull of something like this with my classic lace gown?

Then, I discovered the DYO (design your own) section on Nina. This feature allows customers to take a Nina design and customize the shoes to their liking. You can even add rhinestones. There are a few disadvantages to this feature; the shoes are more expensive and, because they’re one of a kind, they’re not returnable. I went to a local store that sold Nina shoes and tried on a pair to make sure I was ordering the right size, then I created these:

Ivory satin Culvers with an Apple Green sole. Yes. Here they are in person:

All in all, I was really happy with the decision in the end. What have you changed your mind about during your planning process?

These are the same shoes I’m using for my wedding! Only I chose the 4″ heels and am doing canary yellow shoes with blue soles!

I love that style of shoe! SO cute! I think having either a colored shoe or something on the bottoms is a great idea! There are just so many different styles and types of shoes! For me its going to be hard to decide on just one!

I love the Design-Your-Own Nina shoes. In fact, those are the only shoes I can find right now that I like in canary yellow.

Did you feel they fit true to size of other Ninas? That’s another thing I am worried about.

Love the apple green choice! So much fun!

They are beautiful shoes…. but, my dear, I would recommend wearing them quite a bit to break them in. I wore those and after the ceremony my FIL was commenting on how much I was fidgeting…. My feet were KILLING me. Hope you have a much better experience than I did!

@lilmissxmas: Mine fit true-to-size, but I’ve heard different things from other brides. I definitely recommend trying them on in the store first!

@Miss Ostrich: Thank you! :)

@hisbunny: Yikes! I have heard that from some brides…these feel okay so far, but I’ll definitely wear some peds with them around the house a few times to break them in!

There is another awesome custom shoe option called Shoes of Prey (http://www.shoesofprey.com/). They actually offer returns as well if you don’t like them. I haven’t used them yet, but plan on doing so for my wedding shoes!
