Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

New Takes on Tradition

October 2nd, 2010 @ 2:35 pm by Mrs. Brooch

We really want our wedding to be a unique and fun experience for our guests, and some of the age-old traditions—like the garter and bouquet tosses—don’t really excite Mr. B and me. We want to do something a little different during our reception, such as Mrs. Hot Wings’s “Deal or No Deal” game.

We are still very much in the discussion stage of this and haven’t ruled out (or made any final decisions) on our ideas, but we have tossed around quite a few ideas, which I would love to run past you gals for your opinions!

The Anniversary Dance:

First, I have to admit, this idea wasn’t mine. I heard about it from my genius co-bride (my coworker who’s also engaged). We have very different styles, but every now and then one of us comes up with an idea the other has got to snag. (Confession: She does most of the brainstorming, and I do most of the snagging!)

The anniversary dance is when all the married couples join the new bride and groom in a dance, and the emcee eliminates couples based on the length of time they’ve been married. Eventually, the couple married the longest is left dancing alongside the new couple, and the reward (besides our total admiration) is the bride’s bouquet! You can read more about this idea here at the Knot.

The Newlywed Game:

We’re also thinking about trying the Newlywed Game. We did something similiar at our engagement party, where guests asked us questions about each other. In this verison, the emcee will ask us certain questions, and we will raise a flag (pink for the bride and blue for the groom) to answer. I got the idea from here from Thao and Robert’s blog.

It really looks like a lot of fun, and I think our guests would be entertained!

I love the newlywed game!! It’s really quite entertaining. Our Deal or No Deal was a BLAST! If you want to try it, let me know :)

One thing I have seen on the anniversary dance is the last couple got a professional pic with the bride and groom by the photographer and the bride sent them the pic framed after the wedding. This is a good idea in case you don’t want to give away your bouquet. She had the frame wrapped and gave it to them after the dance and the dj announced that they would get the pic. Fun

I like the newlywed game :) Honestly at our wedding though we wont need to worry too much about entertaining our guests. Most of them wont have seen each other for years so it is going to be one big talkfest as they all reunite!

We are doing the anniversary dance, and I’m really excited b/c I believe it will be my grandparents left standing (they have been married 65 years!!) Our DJ will play their song and they will get a CD from DJ of all our special songs from that day :D
I’ve never heard of the newlywed game, but sounds like fun!!!

My friend did this at her wedding this summer. Instead of raising a flag, they each gave one of their shoes. So when the MC asked a question they raised a shoe. Well, except when the MC asked “Who is better in bed”. My friend raised BOTH shoes. :)

We’re not doing the anniversary dance, and probably not doing anything in its place. But our DJ suggested something fun for the whole “bride and groom kiss when people clink their glasses” thing. Every time people clink their glasses, he’ll call on a couple from a list we’ve provided. That couple will have to kiss first, and then we have to copy whatever they do. Sounds like it could be pretty fun, and could get pretty funny!

I like the idea of the anniversary dance. I was a little worried since we won’t have many single women at our reception. If me and my FI did decide to do the anniversary dance, I would ask all couples to join us on the dance floor and the couples will then be eliminated based on their length of time together.

I saw the anniversary dance on an episode of “Four Weddings” (which is addicting, by the way), and I loved it. My fiancé and I were trying to come up with ways to acknowledge the amazing marrieds that will be at our reception, and I think this is how we’re going to do it.

I have always loved the anniversary dance at weddings (although I have never been able to participate). I’m really excited about having that at our wedding!

We’re also skipping the bouquet toss/garter and doing the anniversary dance. It’s much more appropriate for my guests, who are mostly married and a bit older (late 30s/40s and up).

The Newlywed Game is so fun! We are definitely considering it too, we need a little entertainment because we won’t be having dancing!

I like the newlywed game with those flags much better than using shoes. :)

A friend of mine did the newlywed game at her wedding. It was really funny acutually. They used their shoes.

The anniversary dance sounds lovely, I may have to steal that one. I’m still trying to decide if I want any formal dances at all at our wedding though. I hate being the centre of attention…

Since we want our reception to be low-key and fun we are hoping to have a someone to draw charactertures, have rock band set up on the wii, and a fauxto-booth. But I love the idea of the newlywed game and anniversary dance!

I’ve been to a wedding where they played the newlywed game and each held one of their shoes and one of their new spouses shoes rather than flags, it was a really cute game :)
