Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

PVC Faux-to Booth: Frame

October 3rd, 2010 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

PVC Faux-to Booth: Frame : wedding diy photography san diego Ericdos Photo by Eric Dos Santos

We had a photobooth at our reception. It’s not the type that you’re used to seeing around the hive, though. It was a more formal and more traditional style backdrop. At many Asian wedding receptions, it is typical to have a combination photobooth/receiving line/meet & greet at the front entrance of the reception. These photos were printed during dinner and doubled as our favors. Here’s how we made it happen:

  • Mr HW and I stood at the door and greeted our guests as they arrived for the reception
  • We said our hellos
  • They said their congratulations
  • We all turned to take a photo
  • They went in to get seated

Before this could happen, we needed to have a backdrop.

Around the hive, there are so many great minds. And great minds tend to think alike, don’t they? I’m definitely not the first one to come up with this concept. Mrs Sprinkles and Mrs. Pin Cushion gave great tutorials on making the booths, so I’m not going to replicate them here. I’m going to just give you a glimpse into our process. Alternative PVC frames can also be found here, here, here, here, and here.

This DIY project belonged to Mr Hot Wings and Papa Hot Wings. It was a great bonding activity for them.

Warning: In the photos ahead, you’ll notice that Papa Hot Wings is not wearing shoes. Dangerous right? Yeah, but that’s just the way he rolls. He comes from a world where you just be careful. I’ve tried to change his mind, to which he reminds me, “I taught you that. I’m your dad. I’ve got it.” Stubborn! Be safe and wear shoes. Don’t do as Papa does.

First, buy all PVC pipes (six 4″ pieces & four  1.5″ pieces) and connectors (two T’s, two elbows, and seven connectors). Instead of using “stoppers” at the ends as most guides will tell you to, they used connector pieces for simplicity. They went to Home Depot for these products. They even cut all the pieces there so they  would fit in the car.

They made the T-stands first, followed by the top piece. Notice that they are putting petroleum jelly in all the connectors. This is Papa Hot Wings’ suggestion. If you want to be able to remove the pieces relatively easily, you need to put some jelly between the joints. Don’t worry, it will still be snug and secure.

And then the bride (moi) realized it was much too big and requested for it to be made shorter by a foot on each side. (Oops.)

Aww, this was much better proportioned for humans.

PVC Faux-to Booth: Frame : wedding diy photography san diego Diy0002 It ended up being a pretty fun project for my two favorite men. My brothers don’t normally do handiwork like this with my very handy papa. So I think it was a lot of fun for Papa Hot Wings to get to see his new son be the son he never had.

Next up, my overly fussy backdrop for this frame.

Do you have activities that are helping people bond before the big day?

I love that it was a bonding experience for Mr. HW and your dad! Mr. E and my dad bonded over changing my car oil one weekend. I think they both really enjoyed it, and I got a cheap oil change!

That looks great! And I just have to ask, how did you bring it to the reception place?

@lolo7835: We actually hired a studio photographer to come and shoot it for us so we didn’t have to deal with that. But we did print them onsite DIY style with a portable photo printer.
@Erica: Aw, all the pieces break down to 4′ or less. So you can just pull the PVC pieces apart, stick them in a car, and reassemble on site. We left the top piece with the chiffon and crystals attached, just pulled the pvc apart and folded it in half. Let me know if that didn’t make sense.

I love the idea of the DIY photo booth. I am looking to do the same thing at our wedding (photos dubbing as a favor and a page in our guestbook) but having a hard time find a photographer who can do onsite printing. If you don’t mind me asking, how many people did you have at your wedding? We are having 200 and I can’t imagine printing out that many pictures successfully but I do like the idea.

@Miss_nemesys: We had 270 guests. We printed 1 photo for each couple. It took us HOURS (like 4+) to print them using a portable photo printer. It worked out in the end, but I think I would have shelled out a couple hundred dollars extra to have have my DOC and cousins sitting there monitoring the printer. It sucked! If there’s a store nearby, could you pay someone (like a coworker’s teenage kid) to take the memory card of photos to be developed at a 1-hour photo printing place?
