I thank my lucky stars to live in such a stunning city that gives me gifts like organic honey lavender ice cream, movie nights in the park, tucked away beaches, legendary record stores, '80s dance parties, awesome sports teams, stellar flea markets, and vintage bookshops. Oh, and I love to dance! We always find every excuse to escape to the beach, and decided a little seaside wedding in Hawaii is our idea of bliss. Full of our favorite people, music, food and sparkly lights, this is one sunset celebration we will always remember.

Lavender Love

Stop and smell the roses?

Not an option for a little Ostrich growing up with big allergies (me).

Also not an option for a grown-up Ostrich with a fiance with big allergies (still me).

Ninety-nine percent of the wedding decor I have found in the myriad of bridal mags and blogs has a bounty of blooms gracing the tables, arches, aisles…even napkin rings. And when Mr. Ositrich catches a glimpse of even one of these, he looks like he is about to sneeze! Oof!

Subjecting my favorite guy to an army of flowers is a definite no-no.

So aside from the required bouquets and corsages for the Ostrich entourage, we are keeping the flower power to a minimum. And, after some trial and error, we have found a few blossoms that are Ostrich-friendly. And thankfully, one of them is an absolute favorite of mine that I have always hoped to include in our special day: the ever-lovely lavender.

The fresh, relaxing scent, the unruly beauty, the marvelous hue—what is there not to like about lavender?

We’ll be accenting the bouquets; filling a few of the vintage aqua mason jars, mercury glass vases, and mauve vitrocolor bottles; and sprinkling our cupcakes with this charming flower. And if it works like my sea salts, aromatherapy oils, and eye masks do, we’ll be one laid-back crowd.

Sounds dreamy to me! :)

Until then, I’ll be drawing inspiration from my little lavender board:

My bloom-loving bees, what flowers are you dreaming of for your big day? And for the fellow allergy-ridden brides-to-bee, what decor ideas do you have in store?

Lavender is half of my wedding theme! I had started calling around to different florists and found that they would not be able to help me with acquiring lavender. I had to resort to contacting lavender farms to ask if they can provide fresh/dried lavender for my wedding.

I just got an email response from a lavender farm I contacted assuring me that they will be able to provide lavender for my wedding. I cannot wait! My bridesmaids’ bouquets will be lavender (and possibly mine, too, if my bridal bouquet idea of sweet peas falls through).

They also said in their email: “So happy you picked the right season; we had one bride inquire about lavender in October!”

If you go with dried lavender, I can’t imagine there being any issue with the season as long as you can find someone who has them available, otherwise keep in mind that (in my area at least) the peak season for lavender is mid-June. They said they should definitely be able to accommodate my June 11th wedding.

Mmmm allergies, yuck. I’ve never been set on having lots of flowers at my wedding, and skimming down on this predictable element of the day has let us keep our budget in line too. We’re replacing flower centerpieces with handmade ribbon pomanders atop upsidedown stemware… i love the look and think it’s a twist that will surprise our guests!

Lavender is one of my favorites; I think it’s incredibly elegant without being overdone or “stuffy”. I’m lucky enough not to have many allergies, so I love burying my nose in it and leaving bunches in my linen closet.

My father has terrible allergies, though, and it was one of the reasons I decided to make paper flowers for my wedding. They were whimsical and lovely and exactly what I wanted for our day, but looking back on it, I wished they had been more realistic and classic.

Long story short, it lit a fire under me to make realistic paper flowers, and about a year later, I’m pretty pleased with my progress. :) Almost all the paper flowers I make these days are for weddings - table decorations, bouquets, and ceremony flowers - and nearly half are for brides accounting for someone with flower allergies.

While I’d love for you to swing by the website and take a look (www.thecrimsonpoppy.com), there are some great paper flower artists on etsy.com, whether you want whimsy or perfect blooms - definitely worth a quick search if you want flowers and allergies are standing in your way!

To be honest, Etsy blows me away with non-flower options. Buttons, brooches, terrariums made of moss, peacock feather placemats, edible butterflies, personalized surfboards …

They have some really great lavender products, too. ;)

I am also going the paper flower route for the same reason. It would break my heart to have my eyes swollen and puffy from allergies on my wedding day. Plus, we are broke, and having one less expense to justify against such thing as replacing my 10-year-old beater of a car and paying off student loans has been nice.
