Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Full Time Bride? Sign Me Up.

I like my job. I really do. But sometimes I want to quit…and plan our wedding…full-time. Wouldn’t that be divine? If I didn’t have to have a job in order to do things like save for the wedding, or, oh, I don’t know…eat, I would love to have all day free to make calls to vendors, plan out the event timeline, make envelope liners or have an extra long workout to get in wedding day shape.

But alas, that’s not the case. I have a job. And I have to have a job. So, I continue to fit in wedding planning details late into the evening and jam pack my weekends with DIY projects. I’m using up a week’s vacation to go to Dallas next week for all my vendor appointments, and I will likely be tied to my Blackberry for much of the time since, much to my chagrin, the work doesn’t stop when I take days off. Ugh….

I think for uber-busy brides like me, especially those who are planning a wedding long distance, getting a wedding planner would be the most natural step, but I have zero desire to do that. First of all, I am an event planner. I just can’t see paying someone else to do what I do for 40+ hours a week. Wouldn’t that be like a landscaper hiring someone to mow their lawn? And frankly, I’m way too particular, and I know that no one would do things exactly the way that I would. Day-of coordinator? Absolutely. But I just can’t give up the reigns on the full planning details. And secondly, I LOVE PLANNING MY WEDDING! I love it. I love, love, love it. When I’m planning a work event, it’s just not the same labor of love that my wedding is. With our wedding, our guests are my family and friends and King Hippo’s family and friends, so I am much more invested in it. It’s not just a paycheck. It’s the beginning of our life together as a married couple. It’s important to me, and I love every moment of planning it.

Do you love planning your wedding as much as I do? Do you wish you could quit your job to just plan your wedding…or is it just me?

I’m a graduate student so I get free time in between experiments and all I do is read blogs, call vendors, and think up cool ideas while on those breaks. I completely feel for you that you don’t have as much free time. I’m *supposed* to be reading research papers, planning presentations, writing a thesis, blah blah blah, but what else can you think about during your free time?! What do they expect???

Exactly! We only got a day of coordinator because I love doing all the details and am sooo picky sometimes. ;)

I enjoyed the result of our wedding and *much* (not all) of the planning involved, but I definitely wouldn’t want to do it full-time! I think you picked wisely in your career as an event planner, then ;)

I like the idea of doing it myself and making it personal.. and I’d rather use the money from a planner on something else to be honest. ;) But yes, I wish it was my full time (paid!) job!

I LOVED planning our wedding but while sometimes I miss it, I don’t necessarily miss all the stress and work that comes with it!

I wish I didn’t have to work while I planned…things would have gone a lot smoother and I would have been way less stressed.

I didn’t have a job when we got engaged, so I was told my job was planning our wedding. Then I received an email about a job offer. Immediately my heart sank as I didn’t want a job; I wanted to plan our wedding.

I have absolutely LOVED every minute of wedding planning!! Even the stressed-out-this-DIY-project-is-killing-me moments. I feel so close to each detail and each part of it. I have joked with my FH that I should be a wedding planner but I’m not sure I’d have this passion for someone else’s wedding :)

I love the planning! I also LURVE DIY projects, so I’m filling up the wedding with those too.

My day job is pretty similar to wedding planning, so when my mum was getting worried about me not being able to do it all, I just had to sit her down and say ‘Mum, this is what I do. This is basically my job. I can do it.’ I am going to get someone to do the day-of wrangling though, but they’re going to get such a detailed list of everything from me, it’s crazy. :)

I can already tell I’m going to be so sad when it is over!

I am in love with planning my wedding. I still have a year and a half but we’ve already finalized venues. Last night I made 8 different favour boxes as trials. I loooooove doing things myself, and luckily I’m in the last year of my B.Ed/B.Mus degrees (and not in practicum) and have 3 empty days per week to obsess over baked goods, envelopes, stamps for said envelopes etc.!

Speaking as someone whose wedding is the full time job right now (since moving, I’m still looking for something full time) there are days when I wish oh so much that I could put wedding stuff down. Some days I run out of things to work on/internet to search through.

However, I know the second I find something full time I’m going to be kicking myself for not doing more.

I really enjoy the planning and research aspect of the wedding. Wondering how it could be parlayed into a new career path for me…

I loved planning for a while, but now that we are coming down to the wire I am starting to hate it.
