Project Parade: SEW Crazy!

October 5th, 2010 @ 4:43 pm by Ms. Stripes

I so did not intend to do a whole bunch of sewing…but in the end I made tablecloths, runners, napkins, and napkin rings. Basically, I did a whole bunch of sewing. I’m not joking when I say I had hundreds of yards of muslin lying around! And I’m not exaggerating when I say I used it all! And then some.

I do have to say that most of these projects were pretty easy & satisfying in terms of getting a look we couldn’t afford to buy/rent or even find. I loved our muslin table cloths which were really simple, not shiny (did I ever tell you I hate shiny?!), and went all the way to the ground and pooled a little. I LOVE that they completely covered up those ugly rental tables, too.

And I LOVED our Stripetastic runners, which I’m currently recycling into curtains for our kitchen and pillows for our backyard! IKEA seriously has the best fabric! Check out our stripey vibe:

And the actual runners (along with my nephew/sister/dad/uncle):

And I absolutely loved ripping, cutting, pressing and folding all our amazing napkins. Oh. Wait a sec. No I didn’t. I HATED it. Don’t fucking make your own napkins, that’s my advice. Sorry for the expletive, but I feel it’s completely necessary to convey the gravity of the situation! Seriously, of all our projects big and small, this one nearly drove me, wifey Stripes, and lil’ Stripes nuts.

Yes, better, stronger bloggers have gone before me and whipped out 300 napkins with ease, but I always said there was no way in hell I was making napkins. Especially not the super utilitarian variety, which is all we wanted. And then time slipped by, and we still had all this muslin, and decent plain cotton napkins cost $160, and the rental ones were ugly, and the next thing you knew we were making our own napkins. Cue horror music.

Sure they came out fine. I even like them. But if you’re gonna invest your time in a DIY project, I wouldn’t make it this one! And if you insist, my only piece of advice is to invest in some good pinking shears! Because no—we did not finish the edges of 80+ napkins. *Shiver.

Anyway here’s one all wrapped up and looking innocent:

And finally the napkin rings made from some more fabulous IKEA fabric, with little hearts I bought in bulk on Etsy glued to the top! Cuteness:

And that was it for my sewing escapades. Oh! Except for our amazing bow ties, which I’m saving for another post. What items (if any) are you planning to sew for your wedding?

I agree 1000000% on the napkin thing. Don’t make your own fucking napkins, people. (I agree, the cursing is necessary. They’re that bad.)

HAHAHA. I had an old lady friend (and I mean OLD. Like 85…) and she WANTED to serge them all. She said that when she was sewing, he husband would leave her alone and she could listen to Phantom of the Opera in peace.

:P

Otherwise, I would have gone crazy with my 300+ napkins too.

:D

bunting!!!! yards of bunting……. first I was making them with stitch-witchery and backings so they looked great from all sides…. then just stitch-witchery (no backing) and am now SERIOUSLY considering paper……..I think I like the sound of paper flapping in the non-breeze in June in Virginia after all…………….

Oh wow, your sewing escapades are amazing. You are the best. And I will avoid making napkins at all costs now.

P.S. Please let me know if you plan on selling any of your decorations because I would love to buy some of this stuff. I am in love with these pictures. They are my inspiration. :)

I’ll have nightmares just thinking about that. Cutting them all out evenly seems daunting enough, but finishing the edges *shudder*
I am avoiding most major sewing projects, but I am working on my embroidery.

I love, but omg your sister’s dress (I think?): I have a vintage dress made out of the exact same fabric. How wild.

I love the striped table runners, so adorable! And this post also makes me very glad I never added sewing napkins to my DIY list, luckily linen rental was included with our venue cost!

Crap, I think I’ll go invest in some pinking shears.

@hisbunny: Oh girl- you scored big time! :) And the reason she wants to sew for you is totally hilarious!
@amorette: Yay! I LOVE bunting! And I love this progression.
@SandraMarie_1986: ahh! I’m so happy you are inspired by our pics! And we are totally gearing up to sell some stuff- so I’ll pm you when I put the listing up!
@Mrs. Ribbons: That’s crazy! We got it on mod cloth though- so obviously they were inspired by your original!
@SerenaSF: I’ll totally let you know! *blush!
@hisbunny: Thrift stores! We had a whole bunch of mismatched china- but that one is definitely one of my favorite!
@lolo7835: Yes. Get them now! At least you have time to spread out the torture…:) Good luck!
