Fancy Dress Hangers: A Tutorial

October 5th, 2010 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. Plaid

As promised, here’s my tutorial on making fancy dress hangers on the cheap. I found these simple wooden hangers at Jo-Ann’s in the clearance bin.

1. I started by choosing a font that I liked and printing out each name in that font. I used a font called LSLeaves. I believe I found it on www.1001freefonts.com.

2. Once the names were printed out I used a pencil to shade in the backside of each name paper.

3. Then I taped each name to a hanger and traced the name. The pencil on the back allowed me to transfer the name directly on to the hanger.

4. Using black paint and a small brush I painted the outline of each letter.

You can see my name paper above the hanger.

5. Then using a contrasting color, in this case light pink, I traced the leaves.

And VOILA! Done!

If y’all have any questions, please ask. It really is pretty easy and definitely inexpensive.

Can you explain how the “pencil transfered directly to the hanger” step works a bit more? Is it that you are basically rubbing the pencil onto the hanger directly? Because it didn’t seem like you cut out the letters themselves? Thanks!

Great job! I should’ve known how to do that because it’s how I painted pottery.

Great idea! I might suggest spraying over the paint with a workable fixative to protect the paint from possibly smudging.

very nice and pretty, plus super smart! my type of DIY ; )

@iRun2004: if you color-in the back of the paper with the printed name, the pencil lead you shaded with can be transferred to another surface. so, when you put the lead-side of the paper against the hanger and trace the name (a couple of times for better results), that pencil lead tracing will be left on the hanger! really really really cool!!

i think i used that method with leaves when studying fossils or something like that in school.

Thanks ladies!

@iRun2004: Sorry I forgot to take pics of the first couple steps so it may not make sense. Basically on the back of the printed out names I colored the whole thing with pencil. Then flipped it back over to the right side and lined it up on the hanger. Then traced over the letters a few times until the lead from the back transferred on to the hanger. Make more sense?
