Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.

Veggie-mooning: Our Family History

October 5th, 2010 @ 6:21 pm by Mrs. Veggie

We spent some weeks meandering through the every-day experiences of our families, waking in the homes of our sibling, parents, and friends and sharing, playing, and snuggling.

We spent time eating and laughing with them and catching up on all of the happenings we’ve missed while we were away.

Helping out with projects:

Celebrating momentous occasions (Happy 30th Veggie Sister Kale!):

Witnessing the first day of school:

And, in so many other ways, reconnecting with our families’ living histories:

We sat with my grandfather at his house on the shore of Lake Winnepesauke and he showed us albums of photos detailing his life, my heritage. He showed me the first date that he ever went on with my grandmother, a woman who passed away before I was even born. He showed us the displaced person’s camp where they lived in Germany, after fleeing Latvia during World War II. He showed us the General S.S. Sturgis, the ship that they sailed to America on.

Being newly married, with a new last name, I began to think of about our history, the Veggie family history, that will weave together all of the strands of these incredible people and places. And suddenly I felt very under-prepared.

Did I have proper documentation of early Veggie Family history? One day will my granddaughter be sitting by my side asking me about our first date? Sorry kid, we were all far too inebriated at the end-of-year faculty party that year to take any pictures. Luckily, the final stop on our tour of New England was the very place where Veggie love blossomed many moons ago.

So here you are, Veggie grandkids. A glimpse into the start our family history.

Here’s the 200 year old off-the-grid farmhouse that Granddad Veggie restored and was living in when we first started dating. He stole my heart when he brought me here and cooked me a stir-fry of veggies that he grew himself.

Here’s the dormitory that Grandmom Veggie lived in, and around the back is the creaky and dangerous fire escape that Granddad Veggie used to secretly climb up to visit her.

And here is Grandmom Veggie, dressed in her Salvation Army finest, the night that she wooed Granddad Veggie and stole his heart.

What stories will be part of your new family history?

OMG, that photo of your nieces is sooo precious! I also love the concept of explaining our family history to our grandchildren, all I can think of is visiting our alma mater (where I met Pete) and being like, oh, here’s where grandma and grandpa got totally wasted and were grinding together to bad rap music… :)

I worry about that, too. We’ve moved about 9 times in 5 years, and each time we leave more things behind because I just can’t stand to pack them again. And then am wracked with regret that I left something that may be a vital artifact of my life, something descendants will surely want. I must remind myself that if I don’t want it now, why on earth will they want it then?

I have had such a great time looking through your posts and have found so many similarities! I came across it as I am also thinking about an Annah Stretton Didion dress, but can’t get my head around the cost, and the extravagance of it. I really wanted something second hand or eco-fabric, but haven’t come across it yet! And I really want my partner to wear a waistcoat - in fact I have some of the same inspiration pictures that you found. I hope that our weekend extravaganza, with our close friend as celebrant, and friends staying in cabins rocks as much as yours appeared to! any suggestions on the dress greatly appreciated x
