Remember when I teased you last time with my first dress-shopping experience? I’m going to do it again. Hehehe.
The shop where I found that first dress did not have on-site alterations. I certainly did not feel comfortable going to someone’s apartment in Fall River, Massachusetts to hem my dress, especially after I saw the negative reviews. No way—not happening. I scheduled an appointment with a prestigious bridal salon in the area, only to be given an attitude and asked the same question (are you sure you want to start looking for your dress now?) twice! It happened once on the phone scheduling the appointment and also while I was waiting for my appointment to begin!
You know what? Now that I’ve driven here in Cape Cod traffic, you’re right—I’m not ready. I’ll go home now. Get the damn dresses out; I’m shopping! AND if I happen to give you my business and I happen to buy two dresses…well, then I guess that is more money for you then, isn’t it? (Rant over.)
Anywho…I decided not to go with their shop. Reviews on New York Lace in Taunton, Massachusetts weren’t stellar, but I dismissed them as…um….passionate reviews and scheduled the appointment. They were wonderful. I cannot tell you how helpful and knowledgeable all the employees were. I immediately felt comfortable and confident with their business. Although their selection is not as large as most stores I’ve been to, they will order anything you want.
Please listen to my advice: Be willing to try on any style of dress. Educated professionals know what looks nice on certain figures, but you should absolutely not feel pressured. The associates should listen to you. The New York Lace associate was kind enough to ask me if I’d be willing to try styles that I wasn’t necessarily looking into. Oh yes, oh yes. Bring me as many pretty things as you want. I’ll twirl around here happy as a clam for the rest of my life if you’d just ask.
I love you, hive; you must know it. I am totally getting myself into a very bad situation looking for the Casablanca dresses I tried on that day. DON’T LOOK AT DRESSES AFTER YOU BUY!

I enjoyed this dress, but I wanted the skirt to be more form fitting through the hips. I basically didn’t want to walk correctly on the big day.

When I tried on this lovely, she was perfect, except for the fact that I wanted a mermaid/trumpet gown. My assistant told me that Casablanca is usually willing to work with brides who want to mix and match styles of their gowns (for a price). We discussed combining the beading and top of the second dress with the skirt of the first.
I went home to sleep on the decision because I was not too keen on paying extra for a gown that I had not yet seen. I didn’t want to go over budget custom making a dress I no doubt could find in a similar, already manufactured, less expensive gown. I did enjoy the thought that my dress would be a relatively inexpensive “one-of-a-kind,” but also semi-designed by me.
Enter stage right: Spiffy. She had mentioned a friend of a friend at work had heard about…
