With our portraits on campus finally done, we headed to the hotel in our trolley, anxious to really start the celebration!
We pulled up about ten minutes after the cocktail hour had begun, and as we walked through the doors we were quickly swarmed by all of our loving guests who greeted us with hugs and kind words.
I had always planned on attending our cocktail hour. I think it’s nice for the bridal party to be reunited with their dates for that time, rather than be tucked away in some hiding place, and I think it’s nice to start saying hello to guests. Plus, I really didn’t want to miss ANYTHING on our wedding day, especially not the opportunity to eat and drink ;). I mean look at that spread! Yum.

After chatting with family and friends and enjoying a drink or two with my new husband (!), I stole a quiet moment with my mom to bustle my dress and freshen up a bit. Before I knew it, it was time for everyone to line up and make their grand entrances into the ballroom.
First up, Burger’s parents.

Followed by my parents.

And then our ridiculously attractive friends and family members who made up our enormous bridal party!

Then finally, it was our turn!

And since the DJ continued playing our entrance music for foreevvveerrr we started awkwardly dancing like idiots.

Eventually he got the picture and put all of our guests out of their misery by starting up this glorious number:
God only knows what I’d be without this man.

We danced, soaking in every moment of our favorite song.

Stealing lots of kisses along the way.

Whispering about what a fantastic day it had been so far.

Loving every second.

As our first dance together as husband and wife came to an end, we promptly moved to our cake so that we could do the honors.

We started off cutting it together, but we hit a roadblock when we got to the ribbon at the bottom and the whole ’get the cake onto the plate’ thing. That is hard to do with two people manning the ship!

In a shocking turn of events, I took over and did it myself.

Great success!

If you’re looking for a cake smash, you’ll have to go elsewhere. It’s not really our style, and I’m pretty sure our parents would have killed us. So just nice, simple forks for us!

Our cake was simple - vanilla with buttercream icing. It was also plain old delicious. Amazing even. While I do wish we had gone with fresh flower decorations instead of gumpaste (only because our fresh flowers were so incredibly beautiful), the piping on the cake was exactly what I wanted, and the cake table was stunning. It was sad that most of our guests missed seeing the cake entirely (until they got to eat it of course) because we cut it so early in the night.
Cheeseburger Tips:
1. Consider attending your cocktail hour - if you’ve got the time and you don’t really mind that whole “for the first time in public” thing. Or, if you really want that element of surprise, at least consider releasing your bridal party to the cocktail hour, and spend a quiet hour with your spouse! Burger and I have both been in weddings where we were hidden away during that time (without food or drink!) which can be pretty brutal after a long afternoon of church and portraits.
2. Don’t rush your reception - I was all about getting everything—the dances, the speeches, the cake cutting—done IMMEDIATELY so that we could kick back and really enjoy the rest of our party. In reality, no one is going to let you forget about things like cutting the cake, and it literally took us 45 seconds (I know this because our DJ was timing the song we chose perfectly). None of our guests (or even our parents!) saw the cake until we got the pictures back which was totally my fault.
