Us Meerkats are just a couple fun lovin’ geeks from Michigan. We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.
About Mrs. Meerkat

Of all the things I had on my to-do list for the wedding, learning to wear makeup was the thing I was looking forward to the LEAST. Narrowing down the guest list; no problem. Booking vendors thousands of miles away sight unseen; bring it on. Learning to apply makeup… *whimper*.

Nonetheless, I knew it had to be done if I didn’t want dark circles and blemishes in my wedding photos. I put my big girl pants on and scheduled an appointment with our local salon’s makeup artist in hopes that she could teach me how to be a girl. The trial was going great until my face started to itch and break out in little hives. I looked like I had chicken pocks! Needless to say I was washing my face really quickly.

After a couple weeks I decided to give the whole makeup thing another chance. This time though I headed to our local Clinique counter for a trial. I learned quickly that not all hypo-allergenic makeup is created equally. Every product at Clinique is 100% fragrance free and allergy tested on 600 different test subjects. This time my face didn’t break out and it looked unbelievably natural!

Then I got the total cost for the products I would need: $194!!!

My face has EXPENSIVE taste. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on something I would maybe use four times so I had to buy selectively while trying to minimize the chance that I would have an allergic reaction.

The first thing I bought was the perfect real foundation #7 for $23. I felt this one was worth it since it looked so natural and I knew it wouldn’t break my skin out into hives.

I also bought the light quick corrector for $14 because the coloring matched perfectly.

And the natural translucent powder for $19. I tried a mineral based one from another company but it didn’t give the makeup that smooth finish.

Later on I did also buy one splurge product. The strawberry bliss lip gloss for $17.50.

The mascara, eye liner and eye shadow I use are from the E.L.F. line of makeup. I got mine as a gift from a friend but I would highly recommend them. They are very low cost and I had no allergic reaction to them.

The moisturizer and cleanser I use are both Olay. They are moderately priced and are great for sensitive skin. The total cost for everything was around $90. A little expensive, but worth it for the wedding, I think.

I would love to hear what products everyone is using for a natural look!!

Oh my goodness, Meerkat! I’m the same way!
Learning make up seriously freaks me out - all those poke-y spidery looking brushes and stuff? So scary! I don’t know how I’m going to figure it out!

@Miss Giraffe: I have a post for tomorrow about applying it. :D It was actually much easier than I thought it was going to be!

My lips are really sensitive, so I use Clinique lipstick (whenever I do actually wear makeup) so they won’t break out.

I found Clinique for my wedding too. It’s expensive, but so light and, I think, worth it.

I suck at makeup. I only wear concealer every now and then, and only use chapstick for day-to-day. If I’m going somewhere nice I’ll do eye makeup, but it can be pretty hit or miss! I’m that girl who has the same products for years, which apparently is pretty gross!

loooooove ELF! The blush and lipgloss that I use are both from there. (For blush it’s actually a bronzer, not even technically a blush I just apply it that way.)
I’ve always loved the way Bobbi Brown products look, I’m thinking of going by one of their counters to do a similar trial & buy as you. I’ve always been jealous of the bees who seem to have connections in with a BB regional rep who comes in and does their makeup for them! (I think Mrs. Penguin and Mrs. Cowboy Boot both had that?)

@missbiscuit: From your picture it looks like we have similar completions. ;) What bronzer are you using from elf? I looked a wee bit washed out in our last set of photos.

I had no idea that BB has reps that do that!! Looks like I need to go make some friends in the makeup world. LOL

I find that Bare Minerals gives me a very natural look. It’s natural and sort of hard to mess up. I recommend it to anyone looking for an easy make up solution.

I have developed all kinds of sensitivites to make up and I love to wear it :(
After many swollen eyes and breakouts (my skin is not prone to breaking out usually) I discovered Boots no. 7 lifting and firming foundation.
I’ve found that mica and bismuth (try finding makeup without it LOL) are one of the top contenders for allergic reactions, as is sodium lauryl sulfate (found in many mascara’s). I
I can no longer wear eyeshadow :( and many other lovely must haves. What I can wear is Mac eyeliner, Mac Zoomfast mascara and No. 7 lifting and firming foundation.
I found a really good make blog by Kandee Johnson on applications and how to’s, just search Kandee Johnson makeup blog.

All of my makeup was Clinique, but luckily my AUnt to took me to a Navy Exchange to buy it so it was cheaper and no tax. I just paid her back. My uncle is retired military so she has Exchange priviledges.

Having allergies to makeup must be a pain, I’m so glad you were able to find some brands you can wear!

Ooo I’m excited to see it all on! My face is really sensitive too and I’ve never tried Clinique makeup before, maybe I’ll give it a shot!
