Let Them Eat Cake

October 7th, 2010 @ 8:40 am by Mrs. Ostrich

“When someone asks if you’d like cake or pie, why not say you want cake and pie?”

- Lisa Loeb

The cake.

If there is one thing Mr. Ostrich and I have in common, it’s our love of no-tier, un-fancy cakes. And the sheer delight of fun-flavored cupcakes.

So when it came to deciding on THE cake, we knew exactly what we wanted.

One small retro shag tropical cake, topped with a fresh brilliant colored dahlia (like the second photo below).

And for our our favorite family and friends? An eclectic spread celebrating the sinful cupcakes Mr. O and I are always craving and occasionally indulging in.

And then we’ll sprinkle the treats, a few blooms, tealights, and some sparkly confetti across a linen-covered table like this.

And voilà! The classic wedding cake, deconstructed and redefined.

Now it’s your turn, fellow bees! What are the sinful sweets you’d love to have at your wedding or any other celebration?

Here’s to changing the rules…and making life a little sweeter.

This is exactly what we’re doing, too! Except I think we might be doing more of a mini cupcake bar so our guests can try a bunch of different flavors. I love the look of your cake. It looks absolutely delicious!

I love the cake designs, and those cupcake flavors…Num num!
Our tea reception has a number of sinful sweets, including an assortment of petite fours and Italian cookies and our cupcake tree. We second the “Here’s to changing the rules…and making life a little sweeter!”

We are having dessert hors-d’oeuvres and a little cake for us to cut. So rice pudding, bread pudding, and chocolate until you drop. Everyone is always so down on wedding cake taste and dessert is my favorite part of food, so I wanted it to be great.

I love the inspiration pics at the bottom of the page.

I scrape the icing off any piece of cake or cupcake I eat, so we are having pie at our wedding. :) We both really prefer pie to cake, so it works out.

Oh, if I had seen those dahlia cakes in time, I might have actually gotten a cake!! They’re so modern and elegantly simple.

Instead, we are serving individual Key Lime Pies (tartlet size) to go with our tropical menu for our Florida Keys beach wedding. I’m not a big cake fan to begin with, so paying a premium for wedding cake just didn’t sit well with me.

However, my fiance’s grandmother is a cake fanatic, and very traditional to boot, so instead of a groom’s cake, we will have a small “grandma’s cake” just for her.

Oh my gosh, I love that cake! And the giant dahlia in a bold, fun color, what awesomeness! Wish I had thought of this option ;)
