Here in NZ (and I’m assuming the in the UK and Australia as well) we call the Bachelorette Party the Hen Do, or Hen Party. But apart from that they are basically the same as a bachelorette in the States.
Well, whatever you call it, I’m kinda planning my Hen Party myself. This wouldn’t have been my first choice, but that is just the way it has happened. I want to have my hen party in Palmerston North before I leave to go down to Nelson in a month so that my university friends can attend. Unfortunately, because of exams and people having so much on their plates at this time of year, there is no one left to organise it but me!
My two sister BMs won’t be able to make it because 1) They are too young and 2) They are in Nelson, and my third BM is in Wellington swamped with work at the moment. She may be able to attend, but there is no way I am going to ask her to plan this party for me.
I did think about not having a Hen Party at all. But that made me sad. Basically, the point of this party for me is to be able to spend some time with my friends, some of whom I haven’t seen much this semester because of our hectic lives. This party is a chance to forget about stress for a bit, catch up with each other and just laugh.
So, yes, I’m throwing my own party. But…not your typical Bachelorette/Hen Party. Not that there isn’t anything wrong with dressing up in Bride bling and parading around town (actually, that is pretty fun) but I can’t really throw that kind of party for myself and sometimes you just might just want to do something a little…different.
Here are my ideas for an alternative Hen Party:
1) A Ladies’ Brunch - Who doesn’t enjoy brunch? You could either have this at someone’s house, or to save work just head out to your favourite cafe/restaurant.
2) The Makeup Party- There are quite a few makeup artists out there (Mary Kay anyone?) who run parties where they come to you and teach you makeup application techniques. Throw in some bubbly and sweets, maybe rent a hotel suite, and this could be a good way to learn some valuable skills in a fun setting (especially if you are a DIY makeup bride!).
3) The High Tea - Again, this could be held either at someone’s place or you might be able to find a cafe or restaurant out there who specifically caters for high teas. Get the girls to all dress up in their English best, stick out your pinkies and enjoy a relaxed afternoon drinking tea and stuffing yourself with scones, cupcakes, and more. Yum.
4) Paintball - I realise the rest of my ideas are all fairly laid back and relaxed but who says you can’t throw a little adventure into the party? I think paintball would be an awesome way to celebrate your bachelorette but for those of you who aren’t into bruising yourselves right before the wedding (eek!), I’m sure there are plenty of other things you can think of doing that will give you an adrenalin rush.
5) The Spa Day - Another relaxed one, sorry! (You can tell I am a total couch potato.) This type of party could be either done really casually at home with fun “make your own” masks, chic flicks and PJs, or you could go all-out and head over to the local spa and indulge in a few treatments while sipping cocktails. I feel relaxed just writing that…
Which one of the above ideas are we doing for my Hen Party? Well, you will just have to wait until after October 31st to find out…but things are in the works as we speak.
What ideas do you have for an “out of the box” bachelorette/Hen’s? Anyone else throwing their own party?
