About Mrs. Meerkat

So, guess who taught me to apply makeup? … YouTube!

*crickets*

OK, so I am sure YouTube is not the place every bride looks to learn to apply makeup but I can’t tell you how helpful watching a video is when you’re learning. I learned so much more about technique from the videos than I could when I was at my makeup trials.

My biggest obstacle to learning how to apply makeup was the foundation. When the nice lady at the Clinique counter painted the foundation on my face with a brush, did it ever look good! I tried doing the same thing at home but all I got was cakey, thick looking makeup. It was so far from natural it wasn’t even funny. So I Googled how to apply foundation with a brush and found this video:

What I learned from this video:

  1. Don’t use a foundation brush—find something more like a blush brush with stiff bristles and a rounded end.
  2. Make sure the brush is moist!
  3. Don’t use too much and blend, blend, blend!!

With foundation down it was onto applying blush, eye shadow, eye liner and lipstick while still keeping it natural looking. And I found this video:

What I learned from this video:

  1. Use light, peach-ish colored blush (NOT RED) and use SPARINGLY!
  2. Eyeliner on the bottom looks best when you stop about 1/2 way over.
  3. Highlighting areas of your face using the base eye shadow gives it a nice contour.
  4. I want the MAC gloss that goes over your lipstick!

And well, there you have it ladies. Two YouTube videos later and I have a good grasp on learning to apply makeup. I bet you want to see the finished product all put together, huh?

I still have a lot to learn so I am opening this up to all you awesome ladies! Is there any thing you can see that I should have done differently or that might have made me look less washed out?

Your skin looks great! Good job. If you want more pop and definition, I might suggest to go heavier on the blush and gloss. You’re so pretty though :)

I think the main thing to keep in mind when getting photos taken and doing makeup for an event is that it will always look like you have less on that you actually do. So even if it seems like too much when you’re in your bathroom - once you’ve sweated some off and a camera flash has blown you out - it will look more natural.

I think fake eyelashes are a must because they stay curled all day and they really help to draw attention to the eyes. Also maybe add more color on your cheeks/contouring?

@Mrs. Hot Wings: *HUGE BLUSH* Thanks Hot Wings. I don’t think anyone outside my family and Mr. M. has ever called me pretty. :D

@camrie: Yea I totally noticed that the makeup looks a lot less in the picture! I walked out of the bathroom and Mr. M. said “whats wrong with your eyes” referring to the eyeliner and mascara but in the photo you can hardly tell I have any on at all.

@Miss Meerkat: It’s CRAZY how it disappears in photos! I’m always amazed.

Maybe when you do your test runs take some photos at a distance and in different lighting situations to see what works. I’ve learn makeup tips on YouTube too, it’s a great resource for those of us without girly-girl big sisters or mothers. :)

@Mrs. Hot Wings: *hugs* Up until a few months ago I had REALLY crooked teeth (a set of braces fixed that) which has helped a lot. ;)

I just went crazy watching both of these because I am a self proclaimed failer at makeup. I never bothered growing up, and I fail epically now. I don’t even own all of those brushes, let alone products. Eep.

Check out pixiwoo on YouTube - Sam and Nic are just about the best makeup “YouTube gurus” out there!

Also, I wish more brides realised that makeup looks different in person vs on camera - you won’t believe how many ladies I’ve had this debate with :S Yes, bridal makeup may look really heavy and not-you in person, but I promise (as long as you have a GOOD makeup artist) that your photos will look fabulous.

@Miss Jaguar: I want to E.L.F. section of brushes and got $1 and $3 ones for what I wanted. Don’t worry about the names just look at the shapes and feel how stiff it is. Thats what I found out was really important. :D

A helpful and simple suggestion: the easiest way to go from unmade up to pulled together is to get your eyebrows done. Get them threaded or waxed to a shape/thickness you like, and fill them in with a brow pencil or a brown eyeshadow of a similar color. It’s quick, easy, and really makes a noticeable difference.

@Miss Peach Tree: Mama-In-Law Meerkat mentioned that to me and said I should get it done. Guess that is next on my learn to be a girl list. Thanks for the tip! ;)

you look beautiful, well done!
I would suggest using an eyelash curler if you have one, they look a little scary but work great and you can find one cheap at the drugstore. Also a little more dark eyeliner towards the corner of your eye and some more mascara will help your eyes to pop.
I use a gel blush that works really well and lasts all day, you may want to try something in gel form for more staying power.
