Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Where the Party’s At

October 8th, 2010 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I’ve talked a lot about our art gallery ceremony location, but I just realized that I haven’t talked much about our reception space. I’m not sure why I’ve been holding out on you all this time, so here goes…

During our first venue search in Dallas, we found Marc Events, which is basically a modern event space run by a chef. I really liked the space because it was different and seemed to be a perfect match with our style and the look and feel of our ceremony space: stained concrete floors, exposed ceilings, modern fixtures. Plus, the venue has things like Chiavari chairs, pin spotting, uplighting, and even a flat-screen TV in the foyer area that can be used for a photo slideshow during the cocktail hour. Oh, and I did I mention that it is literally right across the street from the art gallery? Seriously. How great is that?!?

So, here are some pics of the space. First up… the area near the entry where the cocktail hour will take place.

After cocktails, guests will move into the main reception space. It’s shown pretty empty here, as it can be configured any number of ways.

The space is different from every wedding reception venue I’ve ever been to, and that’s half the reason I love it. In order to mix things up even more, we are using a combination of traditional banquet seating with 60″ round tables and Chiavari chairs and more lounge-style seating, using couches, armchairs and ottomans. Luckily, I have a friendor for the furniture rental, as it can get super pricey! I’m thinking the lounge set-up will look something like this:

I’m super excited about the space, and I hope it comes together in real life as fabulously as it does in my head!

Are you doing any non-traditional seating for your reception set-up?

I actually considered this venue for my reception as well, and it is great! Very urban and modern feel, located in the arts district and not too far from West End. Nice choice, i’m sure it will turn out great! :)

I’ve been wanting to do the mix of regular chairs and tables & lounge seating, but I haven’t yet figured out a good way to lay it out. Head table on one end of the room, then round tables, lounge area behind that?

I don’t have a furniture friendor sadly. If I wanted modern, I’d have to rent (or buy from Ikea & sell on Craigslist later). If I wanted vintage… I could raid a few theatre’s storage spaces and get all sorts of mis-matched Agatha Christie-era stuff.

Do you have a layout yet? Will you be sharing it?

Great space, it will really carry over the art gallery feel. Very minimal and moderm, just right for a NYC girl :) we have a very untraditional set up going, with cabanas, cafe tables, and tall boys, no formal sit down. I’m really pleased with it. I can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Fabulous! While ours is a vintage mansion, we are not having fully traditional space. Yes, there will be some 6 and 8 tops, we’ll have a table to our selves, and then there are two tops through out the space, two levels of seating, and three rooms.
