About Mrs. Lioness

Just Dance

October 9th, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Lioness

I’m what we in the rehabilitation world call a “motor moron.” This means that my motor skills (muscular movement that results from signals from the brain) are not exactly smooth. I’m clumsy. My parents realized this early on and stuck me in ballet class in an attempt to improve my coordination. If I’d had some kind of motor developmental delay, this surely would have helped. Practice makes perfect, as the brain learns how to tell the muscles what to do…it’s kind of what my entire career is based on. This wasn’t the case, though. I don;t have any pathological delays, I’m just a motor moron. The result? I was (and still am after decades of training) quite graceful on stage; but not so much in real life.

Personal photo, circa 1992…check out that turn out!

Dancing has always been a part of who I am. It’s the first thing I can remember being passionate about.

Before weddings, before baseball, and yes, even before Gator football. Dance has always been a wonderful escape for me. When I take a dance class, I’m focused on the present, no matter what else is going on in my life. It’s always been the perfect emotional outlet for me regardless of what I’m feeling or going through. Best of all, it’s always been the perfect way to express pure joy. Spontaneous dance parties expressing pure joy are pretty much my favorite thing in the world.

In fact, they’re still known to happen 20 years later:

What a dork.

Given my love of dancing, you can imagine that our first dance as husband and wife is kind of important to me. I knew we needed a song that captured this passion adequately. I wanted something that allowed anyone listening to it to bask in joy, focus on the present, and love everything about that moment. Allow me to introduce you to my favorite band of all time, 311.

Sure, reggae/rock/alternative is not your traditional first dance kind of music, but it’s us. Their music is filled with positivity and always makes me feel happy. Best of all, it seems to promote a sense of unity. In fact, my newly married cousin got engaged at a 311 concert three years ago.

Big deal, right? Well, here’s the twist: this photo was taken by a random girl who was standing next to them. This total stranger quickly grabbed her camera when she discovered that she was witnessing a proposal. The photo then showed up on my sister’s Facebook newsfeed the next day…because she and this girl are friends. If that’s not unity, I don’t know what is!

We chose the 311 song “Two Drops in the Ocean” as our first dance because we felt a connection to the lyrics. The song is about a relationship that is separated by distance. The relationship ebbs and flows, but they never stop loving one another. Our relationship, too, started out long-distance. Eventually, our patience was rewarded and we ended up in the same place, but we always cherish how we got to that point. In order to further convey this sentiment, we plan to print the song lyrics to our first dance on the back of our menus. I hope it will allow our guests to share in our story and to reflect upon their own. So without further ado, here’s our first dance song:

Does your first dance song tell the story of your relationship? What is it?

LOOOOVE 311! My fiance is more of a country lover, but I’m hoping we pick something more rock-n-roll. I would be so happy if we did something like 311 though!

Our first dance song was Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”. Reggae never crossed my mind for our first dance, especially since I am a dancer as well (21 years now). I really wanted to have a choreographed first dance with lifts, dips, turns, etc. (since I’m a dancer and have choreographed other first dances), but we knew that “Is This Love” was the right song for us and told our story. So, we didn’t have a choreographed first dance, but it really was “us”. I think you’ll be happy with your choice too. :)

I was, however, able to showcase my dance skills at our reception by performing a surprise tap dance for my hubby.

just wanted to say that i love the attitude, especially given the boots you’re in. like you, i can be a huge klutz. in fact, one of my worst bruises was received after getting off stage during the nutcracker and slamming into some of the rigging for the backdrops.

so are y’all going to take dance lessons together? i’m still trying to convince mine that it’s a great idea. so far, i haven’t had much luck!

@dallastomanchester:

right? I was thinking the same thing. I even made my fiance look at the pictures…this however has only added to his evidence that I am addicted to this site :)

@sallythatgirl: Aww I’m so glad it worked out so nicely! That’s good to hear.

@katyd1024: HA! That’s awesome. I mean, I’m sorry you got bruised…but I feel like there are MANY clumsy dancers in this world and it’s always fun to hear stories from my brethren :)
To answer your question, we decided not to do ballroom lessons because our first dance isn’t exactly a ballroom song. However, I KNOW we’re going to HAVE to have some salsa music at our reception given Mr. Lion’s background…I will work on convincing him to partake in lessons for that as part of my cultural education. I’ll keep you posted!

Yay! I’m a dancer too! My mom constantly comments on how I could be so graceful on stage and such a klutz off stage….I’ve decided it’s secondary to years of being told not to look at the ground, consequently I run into a lot of things. Did I mention I’m in rehab too…Speech therapy.

Major clutz right here.. except when my mum put me in ballet as a kid, I flunked big time. So I remain both clutzy AND a terrible dancer now. :)

I love that song you’ve chosen. So cute and perfect for nice first dance swaying!

Omg! I know your cousin! Isn’t that crazy? Her husband is the brother of one of my good friends that now lives here in GA.

You know what’s even crazier? I know your fiance b/c we went to law school together.

The world is such a small place.

Great song! Our first dance song is “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. I think it tells the story of how we feel about one another.

Wow, what a great story. I think printing the lyrics on the back of the menus is an amzing idea. I can’t wait to see all the details.
