Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Our Names in Lights

October 11th, 2010 @ 1:13 pm by Mrs. Hippo

One add-on our reception venue has that I love is the ability to use a gobo (for a slight upcharge, of course… argh!). What’s a gobo, you ask?

Ummm…OK, not that Gobo. And yes, I totally dated myself. Anyhoo…according to Wikipedia, a gobo is “derived from ’Go Between’ or Goes Before Optics.”

Huh???!?

It’s much easier to just show you.

Divine, no? Since we are pimping our wedding logo everywhere else, it would be a shame to not have it in lights. A true shame. We can’t have that now, can we?

Are you doing anything special with your reception lighting?

Ugh…these pictures just make me love gobo lighting that much more. Stop it! haha

Our DJ offers this but it’s $400 just to shine our monogram on the dance floor. Unfortunately it’s a luxury that we just can’t afford on top of everything else. It’s so awesome though. I hope you get to do it! :)

That was way too expensive for us ($600!!!) so we opted for a great geometric pattern being splashed across the dance floor ($10!).

FYI I LOVE the Fraggles…Seasons 1-4 are in my Blockbuster Queue as well as a Merry Fraggle Holiday!
and I would love to have gobo or uplighting, really trying to see if it’s possible.

Hahaha Gobo! When my mom was pregnant (I was 2) she asked what I wanted to name by new brother. I said Gobo!

Hey, I love the Fraggles. Does that date me :( I love the idea of gobo but after shelling extra money for uplighting and maybe a photobooth, one has to draw the line somewhere. Gobo it was. Maybe I will do the geometric pattern on the floor though.

As my FH is a lighting technician/designer, we are definitely going to have a lighting design done for our wedding. :)

I don’t know what makes companies charge $600 for a gobo pointed at the floor or a wall. You don’t need a glass gobo unless you want colours, and the metal ones are under $100, easily. If they say a pattern (a ‘breakup’ to use the right term) on the floor is cheaper, it’s a very simple thing to remove the breakup gobo and put in a custom one.
I guess they’re charging a big extra fee for them to order the custom gobo. Rosco is a good brand, if you want to look in to it yourself.

Heck, as a theatre student, I remember cutting the exact gobo I wanted out of a tinfoil pie plate!

@rycrafty: Um yeah. My boyfriend is a lighting designer for TV/theatre, and moonlights for wedding lighting events. Brides get very excited over gobos and uplighting…. which are coincidentally incredibly simple things to do. He is always surprised by how much people pay for that stuff. It’s the going rate though, I guess!

hahaha! Gobo + FI = puzzled look. Lucky for us, a gobo looks out of place at our venue so nixing it was an easy decision.

Oh I love the gobo! …even if I never knew what it was called until now! The projection on the brick wall in that one photo is making my heart ache.

Needless to say, I’m eagerly awaiting spotting your gobo in your recaps!

would totally do that, but too expensive and doesn’t really match our venue. But our DJ will provide other fun lighting for free, so I’ll take that!

Can’t wait to see pics of yours and have wedding envy :)

@elliot: Our venue took care of it. I would suggest you talk to whoever will be handling the lighting. They likely can take care of it for you!
