Several months ago, before the wedding planning had fully begun, I read a guest post by Meg of A Practical Wedding on Snippet & Ink. There was one really fantastic piece of advice that she offered:
My first, and most important wedding planning tip is this: before you think about anything else, decide what you value as a couple, and how you want that to be reflected in your wedding. Think of this as your wedding mission statement.
I’ve been thinking about this ever since, and I think I’m finally ready to attempt to articulate what our wedding mission statement is. And here you go:
We want…
…to get married in or near Philadelphia, the city where we met, fell in love, and have lived together for several years.
…all of our friends and family, everyone we love, to be there, but we don’t want to invite anyone out of just obligation.
…delicious food, amazing music, and a plentiful open bar.
…the mood to be bright and fun, festive, and not too serious.
…to utilize our own skills and the skills of our incredibly talented friends and family as much as possible instead of relying on vendors for every last thing.
…people to remember our wedding as fun, not as beautifully styled.
We don’t want…
…to go into debt because of only one day.
…to take on any projects that will cause too much stress.
That’s it. It’s pretty simple and unexciting, but that’s exactly what we want out of this wedding. Just a simple, special day that reflects who we are.
Did you write a wedding mission statement? What values do you want to be reflected in your wedding?
