Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.

No Bed of Roses

October 12th, 2010 @ 12:45 pm by Mrs. Earrings

In which Miss E learns a lesson on love, co-habitation, and floral bedspreads.

Once upon a time, on a day not so very long ago, Miss E decided to browse bed linen for her and Mr E to have on their new bed after their wedding. “Oh look!” said she. “This floral bedspread is perfect, so romantic and just what we need.”

But…”No way,” said Mr E. “No girly bedspread for me.”

Miss E dug deeper and found out that by “no girly” Mr E meant he did not want a single flower to blossom on their bedspread. Yes for their wedding, no for their bed.

“Oh no!” said Miss E. “But you’re talking to the floral fabric queen!”

Miss E saw her dreams of a romantic bed of roses float out the window. But, you see, it is also the bed of Mr. E…so she knew it wouldn’t be nice to force flowers on him in his sleep. In the end, they found a bedspread that made both Miss E and Mr E happy, and all was well.

But the Saga of the Bedspread did make Miss E think. It made her think about the kind of things in love that are not so shiny and sweet. The things that you might not always think about when you say “love” and “marriage” and “living together.”

You see, sometimes love (and co-habitation) isn’t only about the sugar, the kisses, the cuddles in bed on a rainy Sunday morning, the date nights and the sparkle on your finger. Sometimes love is about floral bedspreads and smelly morning breath. Sometimes it is about taking the blame for the other’s farts in public. Sometimes it is about saying her pasta is awesome when you don’t like pasta. It is about learning words like “compromise” and “balance,” and sometimes letting him have his way, and other times for her to have her way.

And really, knowing that it isn’t going to be a bed of roses all day, every day, every week of the year—that’s all okay. Because love is funny like that, and just being together is the best part, or at least that is what we like to say. :)

My boyfriend and I have this problem now that we live together. I love my floral sheets and comforters but he hates them. So he bought this set that I thought wasn’t feminine at all nor did the match the solid color curtains. We still haven’t found a happy medium :-(

Okay, this is a tangent, but: do you know someone who doesn’t like pasta? Does Mr. Earrings not like pasta? I feel stunned by the possibility. WHO DOESN’T LIKE PASTA??!!

The floral bedding fight has been going on for months in our household! Every time I pick something out that I think it is a compromise FI says it still looks too girly!

That’s okay. You two will find a medium. My sweetie and I are complete opposites when it comes to decorating the house. The only thing we’ve agreed on so far is a couch. It’s a very slow process.

I know, right? Remember how you told yourself all the things you were going to do when you grew up and your parents couldn’t say no anymore? And now we have to compromise and STILL can have my fluffy, too many pillows, romantic bedroom. Sigh. Totally worth it.

I have been searching for a comforter that my fiance will like for two years now. He hates polyester, he just wants a normal cotton comforter. Apparently those are really hard to find! I’ve been scouring websites for so long, I just want a new bedspread!!

The last time we bought bedding, we ended up with grey flannel with a white border, because everything else was too girly.

Ahh the bedspread debate….I’ve learned that we need to compromise on this one because I like to go for cool dark colors with pretty designs while Mr. L sometimes likes bright modern stuff. We meet in the middle though and it typically works out.

LOL. My FI has nixed several bedspread ideas that I’ve had. They weren’t quite as floral as your example, though. Recently he nixed the idea of a vinyl wall decoration (even though he doesn’t want things hanging over the bed, either). Our bedroom is very plain! At least he likes the sheets and wall color. :P

That said, though, my office is my office (not shared space) and it is painted purple! I have free rein in there. I take what I can get.

Zeb usually blames mythical geese for public farts. :)
