Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

Holy Modern Art, Batman!

October 12th, 2010 @ 10:04 am by Mrs. Giraffe

So I was an art major in college and am currently a graphic designer. What does this mean, you say? It means I have an appreciation for art that some don’t…similar to the way Mr. Giraffe has an appreciation for music that I don’t (and possibly never will?). Anyway, I may have hated those four semesters of art history at the time, but I have come to look up to the artists that have come before me, and hope to one day impact the world as they have.

What does this all mean? Simple…I like art. Also, I like weddings! And as an artist, I would want art to be part of a wedding, perhaps…But how could I do this?! I’ll tell you! It’s so simple, but not simple at all. It’s the cake!

As if cake weren’t an art form already, feast your eyes (any maybe your stomachs?) on this baby!

Holy Modern Art, Batman! : wedding cake chicago Mondria

(source)

A little Piet Mondrian, maybe? Tasty, I know! There are no words to describe this cake! It’s art and cake at the same time! (And two of my favorite things, too. Coincidence? I think not.) Om nom nom nom nom.

First off, I have no idea how this cake was made. Believe it or not, all those episodes of Cake Boss haven’t made me the pastry chef I thought I could be. From my novice baking skills of a birthday cake or two, I know that there must be layers to this cake? Although how they made all those layers possible without being exactly the same size or exactly right on top of each other, I have no idea. Although, using my sleuthing skills, I was able to deduce that food coloring was used. That doesn’t explain the mystery, though! Ahhh, I guess I just have to be impressed by it.

Love it!

Anybody else totally impressed? Don’t lie. I know you are. ;-)

I’m not a professional baker, but it looks like they just carved different cakes and used a filling to secure the various blocks together…

Very cool!

Oooh, I love it! Modern art was the best class I ever took in college :). Did you guys see Martha’s article about cakes inspired by art? My best friend is considering doing the one with all the smaller cakes.

That is super impressive! that would be so cool for a wedding at an art gallery, but I wonder how hard it would be to find a baker willing to do it!

I am a pastry chef! here’s how its done (the easy version): Make 4 cakes in the 4 colors. Cut them into a log with the end as the shape you want. Make chocolate ganache. Use ganache to glue you logs into a loaf. Coat the whole loaf in ganache. Slice. Clean you knife in between each slice.

Its actually pretty easy, and could be SO CUTE for a shower or an edible favor.

@jo.lee: I totally saw that when the Mag came out! That Jackson Pollack inspired cake made my heart skip a beat!
@staceynrick: I wish you luck!
@Miss Peach Tree: You make it sound almost simple :) hehe.
@Ms Cheetah: When I first saw your comment I thought it said, “Hooray for cake!” and I was like, “Indeed!”
