Flowers: To DIY or Not to DIY?

October 13th, 2010 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

How do you feel about DIY floral centrepieces? I would love to take a shot at doing them for our tables, partially because I’ll be able to look at them and get a rush thinking that I created them—and partially because I’m expecting them to be a lot cheaper to create than going down the florist route. (Although I need to do some more research into wholesale flowers back home in Sydney before I declare that to be true.)

Part of me thinks I’m being overly ambitious to want to give this a go—it’s a lot of work to do before the big day, and I’m certainly no floral designer, that’s for sure. But I came across this inspiration online and really think it looks do-able, especially if you visually substitute the colours in this picture for flowers that fit my own preference of whites and greens.

I think I’ll be giving it a go in the next few months. It can’t hurt to try, right?

I love that they are arranged casually in the vase, yet they still look very elegant. And I could also go to town looking for random jars and vases to put them in. Add in a whole stack of tealight candles to surround each one, and there you have it.

It looks easy enough…but is it? We’ll just have to wait and see!

I’m DIYing my flowers too. I am purchasing my flowers through a local florist b/c originally I wanted like 4 different types of flowers. However, if you would like the same flowers (i.e. white & red roses) it may be more cost effective to buy them online. I have not gone through my trial run yet but I plan to do so this December. I’m hoping to find out how long the flowers will last, exactly the amount of flowers needed, etc, etc.

I hope more people reply. I would love to hear their real DIY stories.

Good luck!

Its definatley cheaper…I helped plan my one of my sisters wedding and she wanted to go this route(cause we were on a VERY strict budget). It was more work than I thought it was going to be. If you do end up going this route then make sure you have plenty of time to get them just the way you want. Good Luck!!

We did DIY non-florals and it was quite easy. We took some river rocks, put it into the bottom of a 10 inch cylinder vase, then stuck in preserved oak branches. Each table will look like it has a tree in full color on it.

I’m sure yours will come out great!!!

From what I’ve read, it’s definetly cheaper and not very difficult to do your own flowers but there are some logistics to consider…Most of the ones who did their own flowers had serious help from people (usually mom, relatives and friends) plus you need a cool place to store them…But personally ,I think it’s a great idea, kinda wish I’d done it myself!

The other part of the logistics to consider is who is going to set them up and clean them up before and after the wedding. When I’ve been talking to florists, I make sure they set up AND clean up their work.

Yay! I plan on DIYing my floral centerpieces as well. I hope they turn out great. I can’t wait to read how your trial run goes.

I did my own flowers for my wedding. But, I also know how much time is involved in terms of prep and creating floral arrangements. Hence, I went the fake route for mine using real touch flowers.

To me, it’s a matter of “What is your time worth?” Sure, I can clean my house. I’m perfectly capable of washing my car… however, when I’m running around and have a ton of errands to do, it is absolutely worth the time and stress I save to pay someone else to do those things for me.

There are some easy things to keep in mind when DIYing stuff. (Things that I personally am incapable of adhering to.)
1. K.I.S.S. - Keep it simple. The simpler your arrangement is, the easier it will be to do.

2. Get help! The more help you have, the faster it goes. I was the MOH and florist for a girlfriend’s wedding, and with four people working away, we prepped all her wedding flowers in 3hrs. (Usually it takes me all day alone.)

3. Practice makes perfect! A trial run will give you an idea of how much abuse the flowers you choose can take. Also, will give you an idea of exactly how many flowers you need to order for your big day.

Other things I’d recommend to brides DIYing their flowers.
1. Make sure you have considered transportation for your flowers. A big truck, cargo van, SUV with fold flat seats…. something to transport.

2. Find a trusted friend or two who can transport arrangements and set up for you. The last thing you should be doing on the big day is running around trying to set everything up. You need to be getting ready.

3. Assign people to help tear down or wrap out at the end of the night… family, friends or your coordinator.

4. Make sure you budget plenty of time! Roses don’t magically appear as a pretty bloom. They come covered with leaves and thorns and thirsty. They need to be carefully prepped with leaves and thorns removed w/o causing too much damage to the stem, and they need to be treated properly so they are open and fresh looking for the big day. All this takes time.

5. Make sure you have the right tools:
- Clean buckets or containers for the flowers to drink
- Sharp knife
- Sharp sheers
- Gloves to protect against thorns
- Floral tape to bind
- Floral Food to go in the water.
- Quick Dip or pre-hydrating solution.
- A cool place to store flowers out of the sun.
- Ribbon
- Pins
- Clean vases

The list goes on, but you get the idea.

@FinallyGettingMarried - Part #2 looks like it’s bound with dark green floral tape. It’s a product that gets sticky and attaches to itself when stretched. You can always cover the floral tape with ribbon or raffia afterwards if you want something more decorative.

I just in a wedding this past weekend where we DIY’d the bouquets and centerpieces and it wasn’t as bad as we all anticipated. I think the secret is not being too controlling over the outcome.

I did my own flowers for my wedding this weekend as well, which included altar arrangements, 16 centerpieces, 3 corsages and 17 bouts, 2 bouquets, and a ton of other random decorations. It was a lot of work, but we spent about $400 total on flowers (and I had been getting low quotes for the same amount of flowers at about $1800!).

One thing that was helpful for me was to practice–and also to take a look at some of the youtube videos on flower arranging. Also helpful were books from the library on flower arranging.

Get lots of people to help you! This was totally important. I had about 6-7 friends who were helping me through the process.

Supplies that are helpful: big plastic buckets, flower shears, thorn strippers, paring knives, floralife food, wax floral tape, plastic floral tape (to create grids on vases, floral wire (for bouts and corsages). Lots of newspaper!

We were able to do flowers at our church which made transport much easier.

We went to the SF flower market (we were able to borrow a wholesale pass) and bought way too many flowers–but people just took the extra home. My brother helped us to load all the flowers into his van on Thursday morning, and we drove them to the church. On the first day (Thursday), we just hydrated the flowers by recutting the flowers, and stripping the stems of leaves below the water line. On Friday, we arranged all the flowers (and made corsages, bouts, and bouquets, which were fine because we put them in plastic bags in the refrigerator–they were totally fine for the wedding on Saturday!)

Another thing that was helpful–get lots of flowers in the same color scheme–it makes everything easier. (i.e. we did pink/yellow/white, so we had pink roses–spray and bud, yellow dahlias with pink edges, white hydrangea, and a lot of interesting filler flowers — wax flowers, chamomile, etc. that wasn’t normal baby’s breath, and interesting looking greenery, like eucalyptus and lemon leaf which looks fancier than the ferns.)

Not to plug my own sale, but I’m selling my flower arranging supplies: http://classifieds.weddingbee.com/topic/tons-of-wedding-supplies-vases-floral-supplies-and-more.

Good luck!

I considered DIY flower arrangements, but the person I have been working with at our venue seemed horrified at the idea of it. She wanted to make sure I knew how much work it was and wouldn’t want me to be stressed the day of the wedding. I actually decided to take her advice considering we are going to have 20+ tables.

Hope whatever you decide turns out wonderful. Sounds like it would be much easier if you had plenty of help!

I say DO IT. I did not DIY my own flowers and I was disapointed. You pay a lot of money and you don’t get to see them until it’s too late. If you DIY you get exactly what you want.
