About Ms. Sloth

Now’s as Good a Time as Any, Right?

October 13th, 2010 @ 5:21 pm by Ms. Sloth

I have a confession to make: I don’t take very good care of my hair, skin, or nails.

I mean, I shower. I wash my face every day, and I wash my hair maybe three to four times a week. But that’s really it. Ironically, I’m a product whore, so I have dozens of tubes and bottles of serums, creams, lotions, potions, and other things that I should be applying to my hair and skin but hardly ever do. The products that I do use are just the bare minimum that I apply in order to not look like Medusa when I walk out the door.

So, not surprisingly, my skin is a mess and my hair is the bane of my existence. Usually I don’t care too much. Mr. S loves me no matter what I look like, and I really don’t care what the people in my office think of my appearance. But on my wedding day, despite my hatred of being the center of attention, all eyes are going to be on me, and there will be more photos taken of me on that day than any other day of my life.

So I have to look pretty. And I might as well start now.

I’m growing out my hair from the in-between-y stage that it’s in now, so I bought some hair, skin, and nails vitamins.

While having long, strong hair with no dead ends is my goal, I figured that the vitamins would also clear up my skin and make my nails stronger. And they very possibly might. If I could remember to take the damned things. (TMI alert—when I do remember to take them, my pee is scarily radioactive looking. Yikes.)

I figure that by not washing my hair every day, I’m not drying it every day, which will reduce some damage as well. But my lack of washing has nothing to do with healthy hair and has everything to do with me not wanting to spend 45 minutes drying my hair every. single. morning. Because, trust me, my hair air dried ain’t pretty.

Now. Let’s talk about my face.

I don’t get too many breakouts anymore, but I have nasty clogged pores and generally dull skin. So I made an investment the other day. I bought myself a Clarisonic!

It was pricey, but this thing gets raves. It also seems like the lazy person’s ideal—a brush that scrubs your face for you? Sign me up!

Now I just have to apply the serums and creams on which I’ve spent all of my well-earned money. And maybe by the time the wedding rolls around, my craptastic skin will be somewhat glowy. Wish me luck.

Do you find yourself amping up your beauty and skincare routine in preparation for your wedding? What are you doing differently?

I totally plan in having my skin in check before the wedding. I have oily skin, and I have break outs on a regular basis, and I religiously wash my face but it still looks dull and my pores are big and clogged. Trying to work on it but it’s hard.

I didn’t even own a hair dryer until this year. It takes over an hour to dry my hair with a dryer, so what’s the point? Happily my hair is quite healthy as a result, because it hasn’t been killed with a dryer over the years. I also wash my hair every other day (so about the same as you), and that’s what I was told to do by stylists. It’s not a bad thing unless you’re leaving products in it. (I also don’t really use products in my hair unless I’ve got something fancy to attend.)

Skin-wise, I have rosacea, so make-up is going to be of utmost importance on my wedding day. For daily cleaning, I use colloidal oatmeal… nice and natural with no chemicals at all.

But the wedding has definitely made me more aware of my skin, that’s for sure!

I think I will have to come up with a seperate budget for skin care and makeup for the wedding.

I fantasize about monthly facials and de-stressing massages. The reality is the massages never de-stress and the facials never really get all the ick out of my pore. What’s the point?! I started using glycolic acid 1xW which has improved pore size and dullness.

Haha Sloth, I could’ve written this post. Exact same as ya. So hard to be motivated to do all the girly stuff, even for the wedding! You know what they say, twenty one repetitions of anything makes a habit, so if we can just do it all for three weeks straight, it’ll be hard-wired into us to continue! Best of luck!

I definitely bought a Clarisonic and started ex-foliating more regularly. I wish I could afford to get facials, but that is just not in my cards.

prenatal vitamins help with skin, hair and nails, and overall wellness plus they are more easily absorbed by the body

Prenatal vitamins!! My doctor told me if he could recommend one pill a day for everyone (women AND men) that it would be this b/c it has everything you need in it! I have been flossing like crazy and brushing my teeth after I eat or drink anything and guzzle mouth wash!! I also have been exfoliating regularly which is something I have never done!!

my hair skin and nail vitamins also turn things “radioactive” in color… supposedly it’s your body just discarding whatever it doesn’t need to absorb.

radioactive or not….. they def. make my nails and hair super healthy and grow like crazy!

My skin just broke into a terrible rash ON MY FACE! And I am 2 weeks out! I need to take better care of myself. Sounds like you are getting really serious about it, good job!

Your body is probably just flushing out the excess B vitamins. Prenatals are amazing for your hair, skin, and nails- I personally like taking liquid supplements and find I can stick to a routine if I take them in the morning with my breakfast.

I have a clarisonic that I use a few times a week. However, I LOVE the Philisophy MicroDelivery Peel Pads…they are the lazy person’s exfoliator and my skin always looks fantastic for a few days after use. I have sensitive skin and I can use these things every day and not have a problem. They are a little pricey (I think 100 costs $55), but my skin thanks me for it.

Perfectly timed! I just gave myself the “don’t look like crap” pep talk last night. I’m a lazy groomer, too. I am strictly wash and go. I need to be exfoliating or something, Let us know if you love the clairsonic and if its worth the price tag!

I have always had naturally nice hair & skin, but my nails are a COMPLETELY different story! My nails have always been a complete disaster…they are soft, they break or rip all the time and my cuticles are a mess. Hangnails, anyone? Ew…

My aunt got married last week and I was going to be in the wedding. I decided to try something and I bough Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil at Walmart or Walgreens or somewhere…I can’t remember how much it was, but I wouldn’t have bought it if it were expensive. I rubbed it into the base of my nail near the cuticle every morning at my desk at work (I always forget to do it when I’m at home) and it worked great! It kind of gets greasy/oily for a few minutes, but it dries pretty fast and it worked wonders. My nails are super long and hard (that’s what she said! oh!!!) and there aren’t any hangnails in sight! I started using it about a month before the wedding and I noticed a difference in about 2 weeks. I definitely recommend trying it out…

Please give us a report later on how that Clarisonic thing works! My skin is bad at shedding itself, so I have to help it somehow.

I am seeing a Dermatologist now to get my skin under control for my July 2011 wedding! I plan on getting a few chemical peels to rid my face of discoloration from tanning way too much in high school and college. I also plan to take prenatal vitamins a few months before the wedding! Thanks for the post, Sloth!
