Hamsters’ Honeymoon in Africa!

October 13th, 2010 @ 6:09 pm by Mrs. Hamster

Hellooooo, Hive! Ahem, I mean - Roooooarrrr!

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68528 1 68528_1

I’ve been away from the ’Bee for a few weeks, and I sure missed you all! Mr. Hamster and I just returned from our fantabulous honeymoon in beautiful Kenya and Tanzania, and I’m so excited to share some tidbits with you! We spent 10 days camping under the stars in the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, and at the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. It was a far cry from the hustle and bustle of NYC, I’ll tell you that! But where else can you have lions, hyenas, zebras, buffalo and elephants wandering outside your tent at night? I kid you not! Here are just a few things we saw:

We first stopped at Lake Nakuru, where tons of flamingos and other birds congregated:

See that mass of pink in the background? That’s thousands of flamingos! We’ve got some stork in the foreground.

We were super lucky to see the critically endangered black rhino - estimated to have dwindled to 700 in the world due to poaching:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 67792 1 67792_1

We also saw numerous baboons:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68873 1 68873_1

…tons of buffalo (they look docile, but when they are grazing behind your tent at midnight, it’s a bit unnerving!)

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 36163 101 36163_101

…giraffes galore:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 67792 101 67792_101

and that was just Day 1! We then headed to the Masai Mara - where we saw even more wildlife!

The cheetahs were breathtaking:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 72381 1 72381_1

and the lions were magnificent!

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 72381 101 72381_101

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 72381 102 72381_102

Additionally, Mr. Hamster and I woke up at 4:30AM one morning for a hot air balloon ride to get a bird’s eye view of the Masai Mara, and it was so fun!

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68978 1 68978_1

Of course, breakfast on the open savannah afterward (with hyenas watching from afar for table scraps) was unforgettable - with an environment like this, even plain toast tastes delicious!

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 69132 1 69132_1

We then continued onto the Serengeti, where this wildlife feast (for the eyes) continued, where we saw several elephant families, such as this mother and baby:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 71764 1 71764_1

who made me hold my breath in nervousness as they later walked by an interested group of young male lions:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 69128 1 69128_1

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 66680 1 66680_1

and hungry hungry hippos:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 67749 1 67749_1

…warthogs (or Pumbaas, as I found out they are actually called - yes, Lion King was correct!)

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 65897 1 65897_1

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 67050 1 67050_1

…and hyenas - they really do sound like they are laughing! They would forage our campsite every night for food scraps.

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 66316 1 66316_1

We timed our trip to coincide with the annual wildebeest migration - there were wildebeest EVERYWHERE!

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68528 101 68528_101

We saw two bull elephants fighting, which was exhilarating as they were about 30 feet away and much bigger than our jeep! I got some video of it here:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 40131 1 40131_1

One tried to make-up, but the other wasn’t having it:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 40131 101 40131_101

I also unwittingly took some video of ostriches like these:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 40131 102 40131_102

…um, mating. It certainly didn’t look like how I’d imagine ostrich mating to be (not that I had given it much thought) - it looked quite graceful! Anyhoo, sorry ostriches. I feel all bird-voyeur now.

We also saw the circle of life in action, as these buzzards dined on a wildebeest carcass:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68978 101 68978_101

and a tense scene where this lioness:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 69128 101 69128_101

was hunting this warthog family, hiding in the bush:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68528 102 68528_102

And then we were in for a real treat - we found the elusive leopard, thus completing our search for the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino). Notoriously shy, leopards are by far the most difficult of the animals to find, but he was just breathtaking:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 65897 101 65897_101

Our trip then felt complete - we had found the Big 5, and everything else that would come was a bonus. Of course, we still had Ngorongoro to discover, and as one of the natural wonders of the world, it wouldn’t disappoint! Still, we were heading back to camp after a long day of game driving, when we saw what would become the highlight of our trip:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 71856 1 71856_1

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 66422 1 66422_1

These lion cubs were just the tiniest, most entertaining little guys! I got some video of them as well - one passed right by our car. Under the watchful and protective eye of their lioness mama, they were in good paws.

Our last stop was Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its reputation as a protective oasis for its animal inhabitants, the animals we saw here were larger, older, and seemingly less fearful of predators. We saw HUGE elephants:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68967 1 68967_1

old and regal male lions:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 72022 1 72022_1

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 72022 101 72022_101

even the zebras looked more dignified:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68967 101 68967_101

and more lions than we knew what to do with!

I admit, camping for 8+ days wasn’t the most luxurious or conventional honeymoon - at one camp, our bath setup was quite intriguing:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 44938 1 44938_1

Those are the showers on the left, the water tank on the right, and the fire in the middle to warm the water. At least we had hot showers!

But camping allowed us to have views like this:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 33550 1 33550_1

sunsets over the camp like so:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 71856 101 71856_101

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 66671 1 66671_1

sunrises like this to wake up to:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 66671 101 66671_101

and action like THIS:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 67050 101 67050_101

AHEM. I’m talking to the right of Mr. Hamster, what were you thinking? That’s a zebra tail in a tree - one night a baby zebra wandered into camp. Four lions wandered in after it and had a little meal.

And I wouldn’t say we suffered too much in the food department either (no zebra though, phew):

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 68967 102 68967_102

Mmm.

And in case you were wondering, yes, I took all of the photos in this post! Mr. Hamster got this shot of me in action:

Hamsters' Honeymoon in Africa! : wedding honeymoon nyc 44938 101 44938_101

Our honeymoon safari in Kenya and Tanzania was definitely a trip of a lifetime. Mr. Hamster, who doesn’t even like vacations (and this is the man I married! Bah!), proclaimed it the best trip he’s ever taken - by far. Camping and “roughing it” was definitely new to us, but we enjoyed every second of it. It was so difficult to return to the confines of a cubicle afterward! This trip may not be for everyone (if you need a mirror and hot showers every morning, camping in the Serengeti might not work for you), but if you’re up for it, you will have an unforgettable experience.

Up next - my farewell! (Sob!)

Have you ever been to Africa? What did you do there?

I went to Namibia/Botswana/Zambia for 4 weeks a couple of years ago, and did a self-drive camping safari. Camping really is the way to go to really be immersed in everything! I’m so glad you had such a wonderful trip, I love Africa!!

I lived in Tanzania for 5 months and I am so happy to see that you two honeymooned here and had the time of your lives. I hope that you did some research into TZ and Kenya before you went to learn about the plights facing both countries as they are one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in the worlds respectively. I hope that your post will encourage others to take the leap and visit places as beautiful as Tanzania.

(P.S. You should have stopped in Zanzibar!!!)
(Oh, and we safaried on our honeymoon but we went to South Africa - TZ has way better safaris :) )

Actually I don’t think we saw a rhino either… but we did see leopard sitting in a tree and we got to drive right under it.
