Grand gesture that didn’t quite pan out for the couple…
One day at work, sitting in the windowless hell that I used to call my cubicle, my friend (CW) told me that it was her 39th wedding anniversary. She looked a little too young to have been married 39 years so I inquired further. Hers is one of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever heard.
CW was visiting her sister in Florida when she turned 18—three days before Christmas. She woke up to find that her boyfriend had driven all the way down to Florida from New England overnight because he missed her and wanted to propose. There was no engagement ring; just a few kind words and a grand gesture. They decided to get married the next day. She asked her sister if they could borrow her wedding bands and drove up to Georgia to get married. There was no dancing, cake, dress or wedding bands; just two crazy kids madly in love and willing to make a go at it.
She is full of wisdom and kindness. So after I became engaged she would bestow little jewels of wisdom on me that I will always cherish. She is constantly reminding me what is indeed important. However, the best advice she has given me is in regards to the success of her own marriage.
Some days you think he is the greatest man in the entire world. You look at him in awe and ask yourself how you ended up with such a wonderful person. And some days, you want to kill him. As long as you can look forward to the good days, the bad will pass.
What is some of the best advice you’ve ever received?
