Hi, bees!

Today felt like the day to share what the Ostrich duo is dreaming up for our little beach wedding—video style!

As a loyal follower of the hive for some time now, I know that the cost of hiring a videographer is often steep and the end result may not be what you’d hoped. And if you have a stellar photographer, why spend so much more for a video?

And until this summer, that’s what we thought. We have Max. Why bother with anything else? He’s amazing!

Then, Max & Margaux got married.

And we saw their video, crafted by their brilliant fellow Flashdance friend, Sharkpig.

Ridiculously fun, whimsical, and full of nostalgia—this is, hands down, the most fantastic wedding video I’ve ever laid eyes on! And just like Mrs. Beetle, from that moment I was officially hellbent on creating my own Super 8mm wedding video.

But then I did my research.

And I realized two things….

#1. Super 8mm videos, in most cases, are far more expensive than videos shot on modern digital cameras. This is due to the fact that there are few places nowadays to process this vintage film.

#2. Super 8mm is really expensive in Hawaii.

So I became really really sad, as our dreams of a cool vintage-esque wedding video were dashed.

Then the most amazing thing happened!

One of the Hawaii-based videographers that I had e-mailed, Love Sick Weddings, responded. They informed me that their videos, which I had assumed were Super 8mm, were actually digitally shot and manipulated to look like Super 8mm in post production. And because of this and the fact that they were local, their packages were in line with our budget! They were available on our wedding day, and within days we had them booked as our videographers. Hooray!

And then I did my happy dance!

So for my fellow Super 8mm loving bees, let me be the one to tell you that you don’t need to splurge on Super 8mm (unless you find a killer deal!) to have the video of your dreams. I would just ask around to videographers to see if they use software that can transform your digital video into a vintage masterpiece. Show them examples of videos that you love (I sent them Max + Margaux’s and they loooved it!), and ask for demo reels and examples of past work. And hopefully, like me, you’ll have a little film of you and your sweetheart. :)

Now it’s your turn, lovely bees! To video or not to video? Let’s discuss!

I desperately want to do a video save the date, but am not sure of the logisitcs. If they can do what you want, for much less than you thought, got for it! What a nice souvenir.

Love the Ostrich pic! Also, jealous of the videographer. We couldn’t afford one, so my Dad said he’d set up his video camera, but he forgot. Oh well. Congrats on yours. It sounds awesome.

The video was by far the best thing my husband and I spent money on, even the pictures! It is amazing and truely tells the story of the day! We have been married for just over a year now and will spend every anniversary rewatching our video to remember exactly how we felt on that day. We used Serendipity Studios, http://www.beyondordinary.net, they did an amazing job!

You’re going to have an awesome video. :) We went with plain old HD for ours, as much as I love watching other people’s 8mm films from their weddings. I figure I don’t want to watch it a few decades from now and be confused about which decade we got married in. (Since I’m likely to forget.) Can’t wait to see yours, and that’s great you discovered it’s possible to get it in your budget.

I love the vintage look of super 8, but I know limiting it can be (to budgets and the length of footage)–sounds like you found the perfect solution!

Oh yeah, my BFF is our videographer and super 8 film is just out of the question - she’ll edit part of the video to LOOK like super 8, and she told me this can be relatively easily done! High five for our trickery!

What a great alternative! You can have the look you want, but for a price you can swallow. Great find.
