I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. Raiding Granny’s Closet

October 13th, 2010 @ 10:09 am by Mrs. Brooch

My grandmother is in the process of moving out of a house she’s been living in for more than 15 years; a house that has been in our family for more than 30. There’s been a lot of work involved and the place we all dreaded going through was the basement.

This room:

Looks like a big mess, right?

Wrong!

It’s a jackpot for wedding goodies :)

After a few days of sorting through the shelves, moving a lot of stuff around, and throwing a lot of stuff away, we finally had a chance to take a peek at what was under the dust.

“Anything you want is yours,” my granny told me.

Here’s what I found:

Good stuff, right?

OK, I’ll admit. I can’t see the finished product, either. I don’t know how any of this stuff will be used in our wedding, but a part of me feels that these thrift finds are going to come into good use. At least I hope they will and maybe, just maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll have reception details like Mrs. Turtle. :)

Have you collected wedding inspiration from any unusual places?

wowsers!! :o) The moment I saw those milk glass vases, I thought of your post about the escort card display.
Wherever you use your wondrous treasures, it’ll look fabulous.

Holy wow, talk about saved time and money, no need to buy centerpieces or make your own milkglass. Go Granny! Those will turn into lovely details.

Love the milk glass vases. Even if you only incorporate your finds to things like the guestbook table, or escort card table, you will be able to use them.

I really like the candlestick holder! I’m not a big fan of milk glass though.

Lovely! It will be great to have Granny’s things as a part of your special day!

Those glasses are very sweet and will look awesome with a few blooms in them!

I did tons of crafts for my reception. My greatest finds were pedestal candy dishes, with which I made cake stands! Just got a white plate from a dollar store and used some epoxy. The whole thing cost about $4 a stand, and it was a lot of fun!

Nice to see locally made work. Notice how well they last and still look good. Suporting locally made crafts can be fun and save money. http://blog.sidestreetstudio.com/wood/10-reasons-why-you-should-buy-local-arts-crafts/

for polishing the silver, just use toothpaste. So much safer than silver polish. Just save an old toothbrush (you want it nice and soft) to help get it into the little crevices. Then just wash off with luke-warm water. Just did this with a cake stand, took 5 minutes and looked better than ever (plus I was not worried about cake touching the stand).
